Marshes are a critical habitat for a diversity of fauna and the ecological functioning of the coast. Despite their renowned vulnerability, uncertainty of wetland responses to sea-level rise remains a pervasive concern in coastal science and management, particularly for coastal resource conservation and climate change adaptation. Inventorying and mapping marsh dynamics have emerged as high priorities for assessing regional vulnerability to sea-level rise, requiring synthesis of existing marsh habitat maps, improved methodology for their continual monitoring, and assessment of their vulnerability with modeling and analysis. Multispectral remote sensing (balloon-, airplane- and satellite-based), LiDAR, NWI wetland...

Sustainable Land Use Systems is an indicator of the Midwest Landscape Initiative’s (MLI) 2023 Midwest Conservation Blueprint. The Blueprint is a basemap of priority lands and waters for conservation across the Midwest consisting of over 20 social and environmental values representing diverse interests across society. This indicator was chosen as a targetable, important feature of the MLI goals that will be used to track conditions over time and prioritize areas for conservation. Indicators were defined through elicitation and prioritization exercises with federal and state participants. Criteria for the indicators includes 1) actionable, 2) measurable, 3) relevant to multiple groups across the region, and/or 4)...

This web map service provides location data and related scanned documents pertaining to Kentucky’s ore mineral resources and their associated commodities including fluorite (fluorspar), galena (lead), sphalerite (zinc), barite, iron, nitrates, phosphates, titanium, uranium, and rare earth elements in igneous intrusions. These data are a digital compilation of spatially referenced point locations for all mapped mines, shafts, dikes, prospects, outcrops, core holes, and drill holes associated with the mineral ore industry of Kentucky. Also included are linear features of mineral veins and igneous dikes, as well as their respective areal extents. Much of these data, especially in the WKFD, were secured from maps, drill...

The Blueprint 2020 Data Gallery is a website dedicated to the Blueprint 2020 spatial data. This website is located on the South Atlantic Blueprint Atlas. On this website, users can explore the Blueprint 2020 spatial data as well as the spatial data used to create Blueprint 2020. This website features an interactive mapping feature so that users who do not have access to desktop GIS can explore the spatial data.

The purpose of Landscape Conservation Cooperatives (LCCs) is to inform the management of natural and cultural heritage resources in response to shifts in climate, habitat fragmentation and loss, and other landscape level challenges. The South Atlantic LCC’s mission is to “create a shared blueprint for landscape conservation actions that sustain natural and cultural resources” (South Atlantic LCC 2014) and to this end, has contracted with the Conservation Biology Institute (CBI) to release the first version of the Conservation Blueprint using the Data Basin (databasin.org) platform. The South Atlantic LCC seeks to iteratively refine the Conservation Blueprint and release future versions as necessary to achieve their...

This indicator measures the protected status or potential stress (i.e., shipping traffic, dredge disposal) of solid substrate and rocky outcroppings.Reason for SelectionHardbottom extent and condition is particularly important for a variety of marine species. Hardbottom provides an anchor for important seafloor habitat such as deepwater corals, plants, and sponges, supporting associated invertebrate and fish species. It is impacted by landscape scale stressors (e.g., water quality degradation, mining, dredging, and beach renourishment), can be monitored and modeled with existing information, and is widely used and understood by diverse partners.Input Data– The Nature Conservancy’s (TNC) South Atlantic Bight Marine...

The Blueprint 2020 Development Process is a final report that explains in detail how the Conservation Blueprint was created. It first provides an overview of the South Atlantic LCC and the Blueprint framework, then combines the metadata available on the Conservation Planning Atlas for all ecosystem maps, ecosystem indicators, ecosystem scores, corridors, and final Blueprint priorities. It is intended to serve as a comprehensive guide to the Blueprint objectives, data sources, and methodology that could enable an interested reader to reproduce the Blueprint independently.

Urban communities are increasingly shaping the conservation future of the South Atlantic. Major metropolitan areas present both direct threats, such as loss habitat and open space, and indirect threats, such as creating barriers to connectivity. As a result of both these direct and indirect threats, and their scale, metropolitan areas pose a challenge when thinking about corridors and connectivity, and many of the traditional approaches to green infrastructure and conservation are not adequate for urban areas. The Conservation Blueprint (Blueprint) is cross-boundary, cross-organization plan that prioritizes areas for shared conservation action in the South Atlantic. It is designed as a resource for conservation...

This request is in support of the Southeast Natural Resource Leaders Group (SENRLG) Landscape Conservation and Restoration Pilot Project. Phase I of the study was completed with support from UNC Asheville’s National Environmental Modeling and Analysis Center (NEMAC) in June 2011 after working closely with the SENRLG Pilot Project Team in October 2010. The first phase identified federal resources available for supporting ecological, cultural, and sociological resource protection across the Southeast within an adaptive framework for building resilience into the system to address risk climate change impacts on the landscape. To further define the co-benefits of leveraging resources in a synergistic manner on the landscape,...

The primary objective of this project is to develop a short synthesis report assessing 11 habitats, using a variety of ecological indicators. The report will be one tool that the South Atlantic LCC can use to inform decision-makers, stakeholders, and the general public about the health of South Atlantic habitats. To achieve this project, six discrete project tasks have been identified and are outlined in the next section.1) Project start-up and pre-workshop preparation: IAN will carefully review the Conservation Blueprint habitats and the indicators used to assess the health of these habitats. We will become familiar with the thresholds and data analysis that the South Atlantic LCC is using for their project. This...

Many ecosystem models, particularly those that are “mechanistic” (based on an understanding of processes), are over-parameterized (not identifiable). As a result, model parameters are selected (not estimated using an optimization technique), parametererror/covariance terms become extremely difficult to estimate, and Monte Carlo error propagation does not adequately capture the effect of all uncertain model terms. In those situations, techniques that evolved from Regional (Generalized) Sensitivity Analysis (RSA), such as Generalized Likelihood Uncertainty Estimation (GLUE), Bayes Monte Carlo, and Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC), are preferred techniques for model error propagation. These techniques can be used to...

The South Atlantic Conservation Blueprint is a living spatial plan to conserve natural and cultural resources for future generations. It identifies shared conservation priorities across the South Atlantic region. The fourth iteration of the Blueprint, Version 2.2, was released in November 2017. It used comparable methods and the same spatial scale as Blueprint 2.0 and 2.1, just incorporating updated information for many of the indicators. Version 2.2 was a completely data-driven plan based on ecosystem indicator models for terrestrial, freshwater, and marine environments, as well as a connectivity analysis. It used a 200 m spatial scale. More than 500 people from 150 organizations participated in the development...
