These data are part of a preliminary report based on the 22-day, two-phase, 2004 Bristol Bay-Alaska Peninsula field program. The program's first phase focused on source rock potential of the Mesozoic section, and the second phase focused on reservoir potential and stratigraphic architecture of Tertiary rocks. Data included here are rock sample details, field sample locations, total organic carbon measurements, and porosity and permeability analysis results.
Between 1979 and 1982, the Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys (DGGS) and the Geophysical Institute, University of Alaska Fairbanks, undertook an assessment of the states geothermal resources under a program jointly sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy and the State of Alaska. During this period, reconnaissance investigations of more than 100 thermal spring sites and fumarole fields located in Alaska were conducted by DGGS.
In preparation for bottom sediment coring at Mother Goose Lake, bathymetric data was collected using a Lowrance Sonar "fishfinder" (model LcX-17M) in August 2006 and August 2007. A 5-meter bathymetric contour map of the lake bottom was constructed using the GPS-sonar data in conjunction with field observations. The contour data and GPS location and depth data are provided in ESRI shapefile format for use in Geographic Information System (GIS) software.
This data lists the historically active volcanoes of Alaska, their location in latitude/longitude decimal degrees, and the year of the last major eruptive event. The 52 volcanoes listed meet at least one of the following criteria since 1700 CE: (1) documented, unquestioned eruption, or (2) a strongly suspected eruption, often an eruption documented in the historical account with very little information (current geologic knowledge must not contradict the eruption account), or (3) persistent (usually on the order of decades, but certainly longer than several months) fumaroles, with temperatures (where measured) within ~10°C of the boiling point, or (4) significant, measured, volcanic-related, non-eruptive deformation,...
The east side of the northern Alaska Peninsula near Puale Bay and the Iniskin Peninsula of Lower Cook Inlet have long held interest to exploration geologists due to their well developed oil and gas seeps, which spurred on the first active exploration and drilling efforts for petroleum in Alaska. Several oil rushes occurred in the early part of 20th century, primarily in two phases (1902-1905 and 1922-1926) in the area of Puale Bay and Becharof Lake. Unfortunately all of these wells produced only traces of hydrocarbons. Several subsequent deeper wells were drilled in Mesozoic strata of this region and nearby Wide Bay to the south, but like the earlier efforts, did not prove to be economical. Each oil and gas seep...
This data contains the location of coal resources within the State of Alaska and created in cooperation with the Alaska Coal Association. Total hypothetical coal resources in Alaska exceed 5.5 trillion short tons, equal to about half the estimated coal resources of the United States. Major coal deposits occur in the Northern Alaska, Nenana, and Cook Inlet-Susitna provinces.
