Macroinvertebrate samples were collected from streams tributary to Honnedaga Lake and from the Middle Branch of the Black River during 2012-2016 and analyzed for methylmercury concentrations and for stable isotope ratios of nitrogen and carbon. Macroinvertebrates were identified in the field, and the level of taxonomic resolution varied from order to species; most taxa were identified to the family level. Specimens were field-processed into composite samples, field-frozen, and submitted to the mercury laboratory for freeze-drying and analysis. Subsamples were then submitted to the stable isotope laboratory for analysis of nitrogen and carbon isotope ratios. This database contains the resulting data and associated...
From May 2017 to November 2019, the U.S. Geological Survey conducted bathymetric surveys of New York City's East of Hudson Reservoirs. Bathymetry data were collected at Kirk Lake during June 2017. Depth data were collected primarily with a multibeam echosounder. Quality assurance points were measured with a single-beam echosounder. Water surface elevations were established using real-time kinematic (RTK) and static global navigation satellite system (GNSS) surveys and submersible pressure transducers. Measured sound velocity profiles were used to correct echosounder depth measurements for thermal stratification. Digital elevation models were created by combining the measured bathymetry data with lidar elevation...

Samples were collected from nine production wells and 13 domestic wells in the Mohawk River Basin, and 17 production wells and 17 domestic wells in the Western New York River Basins. Samples were collected and processed using standard USGS methods and analyzed for 320 constituents including physicochemical properties, dissolved gases, major ions, nutrients, trace elements, pesticides, volatile organic compounds, radionuclides, and indicator bacteria. Analytical methods are described and referenced in Gaige and others (2023). Five of the Mohawk River Basin wells (HE 622, HE 624, OE1468, SA1501,...

This data release contains three data types that could potentially be used to infer spatiotemporal variability in groundwater discharge processes, along with other research and monitoring purposes: 1) Temporally continuous stream channel water temperature and adjacent streambank air temperature time series data (generally starting November 2020) as well as limited temperature data from May to October 2022 from select seeps and springs; 2) Discrete stable isotope data collected from stream water (May 2021, October/November 2021, May 2022, October/November 2022); and 3) Discrete dissolved radon gas data from stream water (collected May 2021 and May 2022). Data were collected at 51 temporary stations installed along...

From July through November 2018, 48 environmental samples and four quality-control samples were collected throughout the Lower Hudson, Chemung, and Eastern Lake Ontario River Basins. Samples were collected from seven production wells and eight domestic wells in the Eastern Lake Ontario Basin, 13 production wells and 12 domestic wells in the Lower Hudson River Basin, and four production wells and four domestic wells in the Chemung River Basin. Of the wells sampled, 27 were completed in bedrock and 21 were completed in sand and gravel. Approximately 20 percent of samples were collected from wells that were previously sampled in 2003, 2008, and 2013. Groundwater samples were collected prior to any treatment or filtration...

Background: Moreau Lake is located within Moreau Lake State Park, a 4,100 acre park divided by the Hudson River in northern Saratoga and southern Warren Counties of upstate New York. Moreau Lake has a surface area of 128 acres, a watershed of 469 acres, and 3.6 miles of shoreline. The lake has a “normal” mean depth of 32 feet and a maximum depth of 50 feet. An outlet control structure at the south end of the lake controls surface water outflow and protects adjacent property within the floodplain of Moreau Lake. The lake is considered a kettle lake and as such is surrounded by ice-contact sand and gravel (NY State Parks, 2006). Moreau Lake is a recreational water body used by the public for swimming, fishing,...

Problem - The Onondaga Lake Partnership (OLP) is committed to improving the water quality of Onondaga Lake. Onondaga County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) has promoted best-management practices to decrease loads of nutrients and sediment from agricultural lands. Onondaga County Department of Water Environment Protection has abated many of the outflows from combined sanitary-and-storm sewers in the city of Syracuse and has upgraded treatment capabilities for removal of nutrients in effluent from the county's Metropolitan waste-water-treatment plant. These measures have fallen short of target levels of phosphorus and nitrogen loadings to Onondaga Lake because of inputs from nonpoint sources of pollution....

Problem The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) intends to develop a Nine-Element Watershed Plan (http://www.dec.ny.gov/chemical/103264.html) for the Lake Erie/Niagara Basin. To develop the Nine-Element Plan, NYSDEC needs a high quality, quality assured, nutrient-loading dataset to serve as a baseline against which future change can be measured and to identify areas in greatest need of water quality improvement. Objective and Scope The objective of this project is to collect baseline nutrient water-quality data that can be used to 1) build a watershed model that will help focus future water quality improvement efforts in the basin, and 2) aid in future regional target-setting efforts...
