From July to November 2019, 48 environmental samples and four quality assurance and quality control samples were collected throughout the Lake Champlain and Susquehanna River Basins. Samples were collected from 10 production wells and nine domestic wells in the Lake Champlain Basin, and 14 production wells and 15 domestic wells in the Susquehanna River Basin. Of the total wells sampled, 24 were completed in bedrock and 23 were completed in sand and gravel. Approximately 20 percent of samples were collected from wells that previously have been sampled as part of this study in 2005, 2009, and 2014. Groundwater samples were collected prior to any treatment or filtration systems, from existing domestic and production...

Problem - The Onondaga Lake Partnership (OLP) is committed to improving the water quality of Onondaga Lake. Onondaga County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) has promoted best-management practices to decrease loads of nutrients and sediment from agricultural lands. Onondaga County Department of Water Environment Protection has abated many of the outflows from combined sanitary-and-storm sewers in the city of Syracuse and has upgraded treatment capabilities for removal of nutrients in effluent from the county's Metropolitan waste-water-treatment plant. These measures have fallen short of target levels of phosphorus and nitrogen loadings to Onondaga Lake because of inputs from nonpoint sources of pollution....

Problem The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) intends to develop a Nine-Element Watershed Plan (http://www.dec.ny.gov/chemical/103264.html) for the Lake Erie/Niagara Basin. To develop the Nine-Element Plan, NYSDEC needs a high quality, quality assured, nutrient-loading dataset to serve as a baseline against which future change can be measured and to identify areas in greatest need of water quality improvement. Objective and Scope The objective of this project is to collect baseline nutrient water-quality data that can be used to 1) build a watershed model that will help focus future water quality improvement efforts in the basin, and 2) aid in future regional target-setting efforts...
The Retsof salt mine in the Genesee River Valley, Livingston County, New York, flooded after mine-roof collapses in 1994 created two rubble chimneys in overlying bedrock that intersected a confined aquifer in the basal glacial-drift deposits and continued collapse to the land surface. Groundwater in the lower confined aquifer flowed downward through the bedrock rubble chimneys causing widespread drawdown in the lower confined aquifer until the mine was completely flooded in 1996 (Yager and others, 2001). By 2005, water levels in the lower confined aquifer had nearly recovered to pre-collapse conditions but the hydraulic connection through the rubble chimneys between the brine-filled mine cavity, saline-water bedrock...
From May 2017 to November 2019, the U.S. Geological Survey conducted bathymetric surveys of New York City's East of Hudson Reservoirs. Bathymetry data were collected at Kensico Reservoir from June to August, 2018. Depth data were collected primarily with a multibeam echosounder. Quality assurance points were measured with a single-beam echosounder. Water surface elevations were established using real-time kinematic (RTK) and static global navigation satellite system (GNSS) surveys and submersible pressure transducers. Measured sound velocity profiles were used to correct echosounder depth measurements for thermal stratification. Digital elevation models were created by combining the measured bathymetry data with...

From May to December 2017, 48 environmental samples and six quality control samples were collected throughout the Upper Hudson and Central New York River Basins. Samples were collected from nine production wells and 11 domestic wells in the Upper Hudson River Basin, and 14 production wells and 14 domestic wells in the Central New York River Basin. Of the total wells sampled, 22 were completed in bedrock and 26 were completed in sand and gravel. Approximately 20 percent of samples were collected from wells that were previously sampled as in 2007 and 2012. Groundwater samples were collected prior to any treatment or filtration systems, from existing domestic and production wells equipped with permanently installed...

This U.S. Geological Survey data release provides surface-water quality, streamflow, and groundwater-elevation data collected within the Central Pine Barrens (CPB) Region of Suffolk County, New York. The data were collected in cooperation with the Central Pine Barrens Commission and the Town of Brookhaven as part of a five-year comprehensive water-resources monitoring program. Water quality and quality-assurance data from seven sites on two rivers (Carmans River- 5 sites and Peconic River - 2 sites) in the CPB are included. Carmans River sites were sampled four times throughout the year (fall, winter, spring, and summer) and Peconic River sites were sampled twice throughout the year (fall and spring). Water-quality...

Fish mercury (Hg) data were compiled for 392 unique locations on freshwater streams and rivers in New York State for the period 1969-2016. A total of 7620 records were compiled from state, federal, and non-governmental organization databases. The compiled data were for samples of 65 non-anadromous species or species groups in which Hg was analyzed in whole fish or edible flesh, and for which sufficient ancillary data were available for interpretation. This data release provides total Hg concentrations on a wet weight basis, ancillary sample data (e.g., fish length, body part analyzed), collection location information (description, latitude, longitude), and source of original data. The data release also contains...

This dataset contains field descriptions of soil profiles and chemical analysis results of soil samples collected in the limed (T16) and reference (T24) watersheds of the Honnedaga Liming Study conducted in the watershed of Honnedaga Lake, in the southwestern portion of the Adirondack State Park in New York State, USA. Field measurements of trees, saplings and seedlings in these watersheds are also included. Data were collected in 2012-2013, prior to aerial application of pelletized limestone to T16 October 1-5, 2013, and in 2014-2018 following treatment. All data are included in a Microsoft Office 365 .xlsx file with a Table of Contents worksheet that describes all data worksheets and a worksheet that details...

Frequency domain electromagnetic induction (FDEM) data were collected in September 2016 near the Agashashok River and its tributaries, within the Noatak National Preserve near Kotzebue, AK to aid in local permafrost mapping. Data were collected with a GEM-2 instrument (1.6 m coil separation, Geophex, Ltd.); a broadband sensor that measures the bulk conductivity and magnetic susceptibility of the subsurface to approximately 5-10 meters depth. The instrument is hand carried by a single operator and data are collected at walking speeds.
