This is a set of scripts developed by Madeline Steele in 2013 as a part of the Arid Lands Initiative (ALI) spatial prioritization analysis. They are provided here both as methodological documentation and because they may be useful for other projects. They are not set up to be imported into an ArcGIS toolbox, and all path names would have to be changed before they could be used. They are commented, and variables should be at the top, but they are probably not very useful without a bit of previous Python experience. Linkage Mapper uses GIS maps of core habitat areas and resistances to identify and map linkages between core areas. Each cell in a resistance map is attributed with a value reflecting the energetic cost, difficulty, or mortality risk of moving across that cell. Resistance values are typically determined by cell characteristics, such as land cover or housing density, combined with species-specific landscape resistance models. As animals move away from specific core areas, cost-weighted distance analyses produce maps of total movement resistance accumulated.The tool identifies adjacent (neighboring) core areas and create maps of least-cost corridors between them. Seasonal change is important to consider when managing conservation areas at landscape-scales. The study of such patterns throughout the year is referred to as phenology. Recurring life-cycle events that are initiated and driven by environmental factors include animal migration and plant flowering. Phenological events, such as fall color change in deciduous forests, the first flowering in spring, and for those with allergies, the start of the pollen season, capture public attention. These events can impact our daily lives, provide clues to help understand and manage ecosystems, and provide evidence of how climate variability can impact the natural cycle of plants and animals. These are the Python scripts used to create the scorecards for the Phase 2 report. They are primarily provided for reference, and require library installation and several local files to run properly. If anyone is interested in running a modeified version of these scripts for a similar purpose, please contact Madeline Steele (madeline_steele@fws.gov). One script makes map PNGs from an ArcMap mxd with styling that varies with scale, and the other pulls these maps and other information together to create the scorecard PDFs.

Gnarly Landscape Utilities is an ArcGIS toolbox designed to support some of the less-glamorous tasks involved with connectivity modeling. It includes tools for creating resistance and habitat layers and core area mapping. The core area mapping functionality was formerly packaged as the HCA Toolkit. We created the tools to support connectivity analyses by the Washington Wildlife Habitat Connectivity Working Group as well as work by the Western Governors' Association and the Nature Conservancy. They can be used to create resistance, habitat, and core area maps used by Linkage Mapper, Circuitscape, and other connectivity software packages.

After identifying collaborative conservation priority areas (see this report for details), the Arid Lands Initiative needed to assess the relative climate change vulnerability of these areas to better understand what management strategies might be most appropriate in each. This Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment (CCVA) for the ALI’s Priority Core Areas (PCAs) is fully described in this report. An addendum report, here, presents a complementary CCVA that was developed for the ALI’s Priority Linkage Areas (PLAs). PCAs were assessed relative to other PCAs, and PLAs relative to other PLAs, so they both have their own models attached below. The HCA toolkit is a GIS tool designed to support regional wildlife habitat connectivity analyses by automating the process of identifying habitat concentration areas (HCAs). HCAs are areas on the landscape between which patterns of connectivity are evaluated. The habitat areas identified by this toolkit may be used as an input for Linkage Mapper to model connectivity between HCAs. We developed this tool to support the 2010 Washington Wildlife Habitat Connectivity Working Group (WHCWG) statewide connectivity analysis, and are making it public for use in other wildlife connectivity assessments. The toolkit is available for download in a zip file that includes a user guide ,demo data, and scripts.
