Stocking is one of the foremost tools in the inland fisheries management toolbox, but it comes with both opportunities and risks. Stocking is often used as compensation for depleted wild populations, particularly where recruitment processes have been disrupted, but it can introduce disease, disrupt community structures, reduce genetic integrity, and cause conflicts between fishery stakeholders. A laboratory study was conducted at the Northern Appalachian Research Laboratory (Wellsboro, PA) on the ability to manipulate photoperiod and water temperatures to determine its effects on Eastern elliptio freshwater mussel glochidia production. Brooding mussels were collected from Pine Creek, Tioga County, PA in late December and were housed in the laboratory in groups subjected to one of four environmental treatments: natural temperature and photoperiod, 6 week delay in natural conditions, 12 week delay in natural conditions, and natural temperature and photoperiod with a winter low of 10°C. This dataset includes data collected to determine the effects of formaldehyde on nitrification processes in biofilters of recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) from two field trials. Biofilter nitrification was monitored by measuring the levels of total ammonia nitrogen, nitrite, and nitrate in experimental aquaria containing a small biofilter before and after formaldehyde was applied to the test system.

Early rearing of steelhead (Oncorhynchus mykiss) in Oregon hatcheries is often problematic; fry can become emaciated and die during the period between hatch and first feed. Thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency has caused early mortality in salmonids; however, thiamine status of Oregon’s anadromous steelhead populations is currently unknown. We sampled eggs of 7-10 females during spawning from three Oregon hatcheries in 2019. In 2022, females were injected with buffered thiamine HCl 50 mg/kg prior to spawning; additionally, a subset of eggs were supplemented via bath treatment with thiamine mononitrate (1000 ppm) at spawning. To determine how a low cost oxygenation system affected survival of captively reared juvenile suckers, we introduced Passive Integrated Transponder (PIT) tagged juvenile suckers into three net pens in Upper Klamath Lake.
