Inaccurate systematics confound our ability to determine evolutionary processes that have led to the diversification of many taxa. The North American freshwater mussel tribe Lampsilini, Ihering, 1901, is one of the more well-studied groups in Unionidae; however, many supraspecific relationships between lampsiline genera remain unresolved. Two genera that have been largely overlooked are Leptodea and Potamilus, which have both been hypothesized to be non-monophyletic. We set out to resolve supraspecific relationships in Lampsilini and test the monophyly of Leptodea and Potamilus using an integrative approach. Here we present details on our molecular, morphological, and distribution data.

Cisco and Bloater growth data from hatchery reared fish were collected in association with a project to repopulate Lake Ontario native prey species. Fish were grown and measured under hatchery conditions for up to nine months before being released into Lake Ontario. Weekly measurements of total length, total weight, and morphometrics were recorded for both species to determine growth during their first year of growth for eight separate year-classes, 2012-2019.

From 2002-2006, we used a variety of sampling techniques to survey the amphibians and water chemistry of Lower Suwannee National Wildlife Refuge in Florida’s Big Bend region. We recorded 23 amphibian species, 19 frogs and 4 salamanders. Species richness was lower than in areas of the coastal Big Bend region to the north. Amphibians occupied a wide variety of habitats and appeared tolerant of the generally acidic conditions of many of the wetlands. Although additional species may yet be found in LSNWR, this survey provides a historic baseline for assessing future status and trends of amphibian populations.

It has been ten years since the last comprehensive assessment of non-native marine fishes in Florida. Herein, we report sightings of 41 species from Florida coastal waters since the earliest sighting in 1984.
The proliferation of non-native fishes in Florida is a serious problem, and new species continue to be introduced to the State. Herein we report the eradication of two species of non-native fishes in Miami, Florida (Giant Cichlid Petenia splendida and Blue Mbuna Labeotropheus fuelleborni; both Family: Cichlidae). We removed these fishes before they were observed in the extensive, interconnected canal system through which they may have been able to expand throughout south Florida and access protected areas such as Everglades National Park and Water Conservation Areas.

This dataset represents stable carbon and nitrogen isotopic information from tissue samples collected from diamondback terrapins, potential prey items, and vegetation from 6 salt marsh sites (4 mainland, 2 island) within a 30 km section of southern Barnegat Bay, New Jersey, USA. Red blood cells were collected from terrapins in 2011 (mature females), and whole blood samples were collected in 2015 and 2019 from mature males and females and immature females. Vegetation and invertebrates prey samples were collected within proximity of terrapin capture sites in 2015 and 2019.
Ecological models facilitate evaluation of alternative approaches to restore the Greater Everglades ecosystem. However, the provision of useful and accessible models is a challenge because there is often a disconnect between model output and its use by decision makers. Joint Ecosystem Modeling (JEM) meets this challenge by providing ecological model output tailored to management decisions; ecological models were developed by JEM to evaluate potential effects of restoration projects on natural resources in the impacted areas. The Biscayne Bay and Southeastern Everglades Ecosystem Restoration (BBSEER) Project is part of the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP). A goal of BBSEER is to identify potential...

Data from 10-day sediment toxicity tests of bed sediments from the Eighteenmile Creek Area of Concern and Oak Orchard Creek (nearby reference stream), Niagara and Orleans County, New York, respectively. Specifically, the data was used to compare the survival and growth of two macroinvertebrate species in sediments from study sites and laboratory controls. Results are from 10-day sediment exposures of two test species, Chironomus dilutus and Hyalella azteca. Sediment samples were collected from five sites on each stream. Bed-sediments were collected from depositional areas using a petite Ponar (0.03 square meter) dredge. At each site, approximately five grabs were composited into a bucket, mixed, and a 4-liter (L)...

These data were compiled for a study evaluating if rare or endangered fishes (e.g., Humpback Chub and Bonytail) can be transported in a shipping bag with 1-L of water and minimal sedative into remote locations. There were two components (laboratory trials and a field trial) of the study conducted in 2014 and 2017. Laboratory trials were conducted at the Rocky Mountain Research Station in Flagstaff, Arizona to evaluate three sedatives: AquaCalm, Tricaine-S, or Aqui-S 20E. Pilot trials were conducted with five fish (Bonytail) placed in a bag, where induction/recovery times, level of sedation, and fate after release were monitored for fish exposed to a sedative. Fish density increased to 20 fish (Bonytail and Humpback...
This study aimed to (1) enrich microbial acetylenotrophs from trichloroethylene (TCE) contaminated groundwater and (2) evaluate whether these enrichments could degrade TCE coupled to acetylene degradation. Acetylenotrophs are microorganisms that use acetylene as their carbon and energy source. TCE contaminated groundwater was collected from wells at the Naval Air Warfare Center (NAWC) in West Trenton, New Jersey. Microbial acetylene uptake in groundwater samples was established by mixing the groundwater with a defined mineral medium to supply nutrients and providing acetylene as the sole electron donor and carbon source. The structure of the microbial community in those enrichments was characterized as shown by...
