Field measurements of various optical properties of the water column were acquired from a single location on the Kootenai River in northern Idaho, September 26-27, 2017, to support research on remote sensing of rivers, particularly estimation of water depth from passive optical image data. The field measurements included in this data release include several parameters measured with three different instruments. A WetLabs EcoTriplet multi-probe was used to measure the volume scattering coefficient (Beta) at 700 nm, the back-scattering coefficient (b_b) at 700 nm, chlorophyll concentration, colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) concentration, and turbidity. A Sequoia Scientific LISST-100X was used to measure the...

Field measurements of various optical properties of the water column were acquired from a reach of the upper Sacramento River in northern California, September 13, 2017, to support research on remote sensing of rivers, particularly estimation of water depth from passive optical image data. A vertical profile of downwelling spectral irradiance at different depths within the water column was measured on the Deschutes River near Bend, OR, July 28, 2016, to support research on remote sensing of river discharge. Downwelling spectral irradiance data were collected using an Analytical Spectral Devices FieldSpec3 spectroradiometer operated in irradiance mode and deployed from a customized measurement crane. The measurements were made near a boat launch downstream of Benham Falls. In addition, the depth at which each downwelling spectral irradiance measurement was made was obtained using an Onset Hobo pressure transducer mounted next to the spectroradiometer foreoptic on the crane. This data release provides...

A vertical profile of downwelling spectral irradiance at different depths within the water column was measured on the Snake River in Grand Teton National Park, WY, August 23, 2015, to support research on remote sensing of rivers. Downwelling spectral irradiance data were collected using an Analytical Spectral Devices FieldSpec3 spectroradiometer operated in irradiance mode and deployed from a customized measurement crane. The measurements were made in a reach downstream of Jackson Lake referred to as Swallow bend. In addition, the depth at which each downwelling spectral irradiance measurement was made was obtained using an Onset Hobo pressure transducer mounted next to the spectroradiometer foreoptic on the crane....
A kinematic flood routing procedure has been devised for a small dendritic headwater gully network on the Western slope of Colorado. the program is spatially-distributed, incorporating lateral inflows from 103 field sites on the network for which channel geometry variables are known. This model, in which a lateral inflow algorithm for the sideslopes between each channel site is convoluted into a Freeze-type (1978) numerical scheme, is fully developed in this paper. Although the field basis of the lateral inflow algorithm has been tested elsewhere (Faulkner, 1990), sensitivity tests were needed for the roughness and hillslope velocity estimates used in the routing procedure. After these successful tests, a suitably...
Stream flow in urban aquatic ecosystems often is maintained by water-reclamation plant (WRP) effluents that contain mixtures of natural and anthropogenic chemicals that persist through the treatment processes. In effluent-impacted streams, aquatic organisms such as fish are continuously exposed to biologically-active chemicals throughout their life cycles. The North Shore Channel of the Chicago River (Chicago, Illinois) is part of an urban ecosystem in which > 80% of the annual flow consists of effluent from the North Side WRP. In this study, multiple samplings of the effluent and stream water were conducted and fish (largemouth bass and carp) were collected on 2 occasions from the North Shore Channel. Fish also...
