Avian morbidity and mortality events reported in WHISPers that began in calendar year 2023. Events reported in WHISPers represent only those events that are reported to the USGS National Wildlife Health Center or the Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Studies at the University of Georgia, or that State, Federal, and Tribal partners voluntarily report into WHISPers, not legal, and marked as “Visible to the Public”.

A State Wildlife Action Plan is a comprehensive assessment of a state’s wildlife and wildlife-related issues submitted by the Fish and Wildlife Management agencies of every state. These plans lay out actions necessary to conserve wildlife and their habitat within each state and prevent endangered species listings. Congress has mandated that these action plans be reviewed and revised every ten years to identify the species of greatest conservation need within each state. In addition, these plans provide the basis for state access to funding from the Fish and Wildlife Service State and Tribal Wildlife Grants Program to target such species and enable effective conservation efforts. FY2011Aspen populations are in decline across western North America due to altered fire regimes, herbivory, drought, pathogens, and competition with conifers. Aspen stands typically support higher avian biodiversity than surrounding habitats, and maintaining current distributions of several avian species is likely tied to persistence of aspen on the landscape. We are examining effects of climate change on aspen and associated avian communities in isolated mountain ranges of the northern Great Basin, by coupling empirical models of avian-habitat relationships with spatially-explicit landscape simulations of vegetation and disturbance dynamics (using LANDIS-II) under various climate change scenarios. This project researched the expected variation in avian demographic responses to environmental change across a gradient of species and landscapes from the San Francisco Bay to the Central Valley of California. We used two avian taxa, waterfowl and songbirds, as case studies for the integration of long-term demographic data with climate change variables. For each taxon, we assessed and synthesized several demographic responses to climate change variables (i.e., precipitation and temperature) to explore the relationship between four large-scale climate indices and bird species arrival dates and nest survival. A web-based application provides natural resource managers with project results.
