The population of beluga whales in Cook Inlet, Alaska, is in decline. and since 2000 these whales have been under consideration for designation as "endangered" under the Endangered Species Act (and were placed on the list in October 2008, Just betore this article went to press). In order to study environmental and hydrodynamic impacts on the belugas movements and survival in the unique habitat of the inlet, a three-dimensional ocean circulation and inundation model is cumbined with satellite-tracked belaga whale data Model-whale data comparisons from two whale paths during a nve-day period (September 17-21,2000) covering 10 tidal cycles suggest that daily movements of belugas in the upper Cook Inlet follow propagation...

Presents a study that documented the traditional ecological knowledge of the Alaska Native hunters of beluga whales in Cook Inlet to add information available on the population. Importance of summer feeding to Cook Inlet belugas; Predation by killer whales; Information on beluga cows and calves.

Remote locations, such as the Arctic, are often sinks for persistent contaminants which can ultimately bioaccumulate in local wildlife. Assessing temporal contaminant trends in the Arctic is important in understanding whether restrictions on legacy persistent organic pollutants (POPs) have led to concentration declines. Beluga whale (Delphinapterus leucas) tissue samples were collected from two subpopulations (Cook Inlet, Alaska and the eastern Chukchi Sea) between 1989 and 2006. Several POPs (polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dichlorodiphenyldichloroethane and related compounds (DDTs), chlordanes, hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs), chlorobenzenes, mirex, polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and semi-quantitatively...

Aerial surveys of belugas, Delphinapterus leucas, in Cook Inlet were flown each year during June and/or July from 1993 to 2000. This project was designed to delineate distribution and collect aerial counts, elements critical to the management of this small, isolated stock that was subjected to a persistent harvest by Native hunters. The surveys provided a thorough, annual coverage of the coastal areas of the inlet (1,350 km of shoreline) and included roughly 1,000 km of offshore transects annually. Coastal transects were flown 1.4 km from the waterline, thus surveying most of the area within 3 km of shore. These, along with offshore transects, provided annual systematic searches of 13-33% of the entire inlet. The...

Cook Inlet, Alaska belugas (CIB) (Delphinapterus leucas ) are a genetically and geographically isolated wild stock, residing in the upper Inlet's waters year-round. Four studies were conducted to help evaluate CIB health and survival threats: 1) characterization of hematology and serum chemistry values in Bristol Bay belugas (BBB), a healthy growing population, for comparison to CIB, 2) characterization of hematology and serum chemistry variation patterns from captive belugas over 22 years, to provide methods applicable to wild populations such as CIB, 3) development of a model using anthropogenic and environmental factors to demonstrate CIB population trajectories based on survival and fecundity rates in a simulated...
