Fact sheet about a project funded by the LCC Network to conduct spatial uncertainty and sensitivity analyses to enhance the comparability of landscape connectivity products for large-scale landscape planning.
The North American Bat Monitoring Program (NABat) is a multi-agency, multi-national effort and is designed to address the need for a program that addresses standardized monitoring of bat species across multiple taxa in North America. The development of NABat has incorporated the expertise of bat biologists, wildlife managers, policy makers, statisticians, and data managers throughout the process. The first step in the development of NABat was to build consensus within the community of North American bat researchers and biologists on feasible monitoring techniques and protocols to assess species responses to white-nose syndrome (WNS). In summer 2012, funding was obtained from the National Landscape Conservation Cooperative...

This data represents an assessment of forest patch size used in the ecological assessment of upland hardwood systems by the GCPO LCC. We used a combination of remote sensing products including 2011 National Land Cover Database (NLCD) forest classes and the 2011 MAV forest classification layer produced by the Lower Mississippi Valley Joint Venture to delineate patches of all forest types in the GCPO LCC. We used NLCD as the primary data source when assessing forests outside the GCPO LCC MAV subgeography, and the LMVJV forest classification as the primary data source for forest assessment within the MAV. NLCD was developed using 2011 Landsat TM imagery, with forest classes including only areas with trees exceeding...

Ecological conditions within forest stands are also important indicators of ecosystem integrity. Priority wildlife species are frequently shown to exhibit preference for a specific range of conditions of canopy cover and basal area, tree diameter, midstory cover, and other forest characteristics within a stand. The ISA recommends a range of overstory canopy cover between 20-80% for upland hardwood woodlands and >80% for upland hardwood forests in the Ozark Highlands subgeography. We used the 2011 National Land Cover Database (NLCD) U.S. Forest Service Tree Canopy (analytical) product (USDA Forest Service Remote Sensing Applications Center 2014) combined with the woodland and forest masks derived above for assessment...

The Mississippi River alluvial floodplain formerly held one of the largest expanses of bottomland hardwood forest in North America. It is also one of the most impeded systems on the continent, with altered hydrology from a vast network of protection levees and most naturally occurring bottomland forests long ago converted to agriculture across the majority of the Mississippi Alluvial Valley (MAV). In the MAV, forested wetland systems include alluvial bottomland hardwoods, cypress-tupelo forests, lower flatwoods and riparian forests associated with the Mississippi River. These systems support several species of conservation concern that the GCPO LCC Integrated Science Agenda (ISA) designates as representative...

Habitat loss and degradation due to urban expansion and other human activities have raised concerns for the Western Gulf Coast Mottled Duck population. This species relies on tidal, palustrine, and agricultural wetlands as well as grasslands for all of its life cycle needs. The disappearance of suitable nesting and brood-rearing habitat is believed to be the primary factor associated with long-term population decline of the mottled duck. One of the first science projects initiated by the GCP LCC was development of a spatially-explicit Decision Support Tool (DST) to help guide conservation and management of habitat for breeding Mottled Ducks in coastal Louisiana and Texas. An important next step is evaluating the...

A brief overview of the ecological assessment of upland streams and rivers in the Gulf Coastal Plains and Ozarks geography.
These heatmaps show a top 3 montane ecosystem functionality stressor, as ranked by participants, and the concentration of participants who reported as working in each municipality or county who also voted for that stressor across the landscape. Symbology represents the percentage of participants with 0% = dark green, 0.0001 % - 24.99% = light green, 25% - 49.99% = yellow, 50% - 74.99% = orange, 75% - 100% = red. All counties and municipalities identified by participants as areas where they work were given a tally for each of the top 3 stressors that participants chose. Counties with a small number of participants were not adjusted for small sample size. These results were shared via a webinar hosted by the Desert...

Amphibians and reptiles (herpetofauna) have been linked to specific microhabitat characteristics, microclimates, and water resources in riparian forests. Our objective was to relate variation in herpetofauna abundance to changes in habitat caused by a beetle used for Tamarix biocontrol (Diorhabda carinulata; Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) and riparian restoration. During 2013 and 2014, we measured vegetation and monitored herpetofauna via trapping and visual encounter surveys (VES) at locations affected by biocontrol along the Virgin River in the Mojave Desert of the southwestern United States. Twenty-one sites were divided into four riparian stand types based on density and percent cover of dominant trees (Tamarix,...

As a result of climate change, a warmer and drier climate has led to an increase in wildfire severity. Severe wildfires can cause whitebark pine mortality during all life stages. Conversely, low intensity fires may enhance whitebark pine persistence by removing competing species that are less fire tolerant. However, low intensity fires have been suppressed because of an increase in recreational development and urbanization. Thus, a decline in low intensity fires has reduced whitebark pine persistence by increasing species encroachment while simultaneously, increases in wildfire severity are increasing whitebark pine mortality
In 1957, Henry (Hank) Hansen and Jim King identified important habitat for molting geese in an area now referred to as the Teshekpuk Lake Special Area (TLSA) in northern Alaska. Located within the larger National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska (NPR-AK), the importance of this habitat was reaffirmed by the Secretary of Interior in 1977 with the designation of the TLSA. In 1976, the Waterfowl Department of U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) Migratory Bird Management-Alaska (MBM-AK) began conducting aerial goose surveys within an area of the TLSA that they designated as the Traditional Survey Area. These surveys continued through 1978, after which there was a three-year hiatus. Surveys began again in 1982 and continued...

Three major contemperary problems related to energy are discussed by Dr. Maxey. First, the alleged causal association between environmental degradation and energy-intensive technology is refuted. Dr. Maxey contends only the wealthy, high-technology societies are able to protect environmental quality. For example, only technologically advanced nations can afford sewage systems, disposal plants, etc. Concerning the alleged causal association between natural resource exhaustion and industralized hard technology, Dr. Maxey suggests that industralized nations are better able to protect renewable resources, like forests. Less-developed countries without other sources fo energy must cut their forests for fuel. The final...

This website accompanies task 1 as described in the final report, “Comparability of landscape connectivity products for large-scale landscape planning.” The website is a compilation of data on recent, ongoing, and planned landscape connectivity modeling studies across the Landscape Conservation Cooperative (LCC) network. As of April 2014, we have compiled data from 73 studies of 116 species. The vast majority of studies use circuit theory or least-cost paths to model connectivity, but other approaches represented in the database include graph theory, resistant kernel models, and models of genetic relatedness.
Equitable Access to Recreation is an indicator of the Midwest Landscape Initiative’s (MLI) 2023 Midwest Conservation Blueprint. The Blueprint is a basemap of priority lands and waters for conservation across the Midwest consisting of over 20 social and environmental values representing diverse interests across society. This indicator was chosen as a targetable, important feature of the MLI goals that will be used to track conditions over time and prioritize areas for conservation. Indicators were defined through elicitation and prioritization exercises with federal and state participants. Criteria for the indicators includes 1) actionable, 2) measurable, 3) relevant to multiple groups across the region, and/or 4)...

The Gulf Coast Vulnerability Assessment utilized expert opinion that was gathered through the Standardized Index of Vulnerability and Value (SIVVA) tool, which is an Excel-based vulnerability and prioritization tool that enables assessors to provide input in a relatively short time and allows for relatively seamless compilation of results. The vulnerability of each ecosystem and associated species was conducted by subregion, excluding those subregions where the species did not occur in significant numbers. Assessors were asked to evaluate species based on the habitats they use in a particular subregion. Because vulnerability can vary with life-stage for many species, assessors were asked to consider the most vulnerable...

Identifying distributions of submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) across the northern Gulf of Mexico (NGOM) coastal landscape necessitates describing ecological processes in estuarine gradients. SAV assemblages are ecological indicators of aquatic ecosystem health; spatial and temporal distributions are strongly correlated to environmental conditions. Many wildlife species, including waterfowl, are dependent on SAV and seeds in NGOM coastal marshes for food and habitat. To understand SAV distributions at multiple spatial and temporal scales a multi-tiered project was designed to collect SAV presence, species assemblage, and cover data, and cores to describe seed food. The first tier sampled inter-annually in the growing...

Temporal dynamics of each GCPO priority system are recognized as important contributors to the overall system integrity. The Integrated Science Agenda (ISA) alludes to the desired condition that forest structure should be dominated by mature upland hardwood stands across the greater landscape. However, to ensure future forest sustainability a small portion (≤10% of the landscape) should be in a state of regeneration, or early forest succession. The ISA provides this endpoint as a general target, but lacks specificity regarding the desired composition of forest stand ages because there is limited literature available that assesses upland hardwood stand age from an ecosystem integrity perspective. Priority wildlife...

The Gulf Coastal Plains and Ozarks (GCPO) Landscape Conservation Cooperative (LCC) has conducted an ecological assessment of various landscape characteristics, or endpoints, outlined in the LCC Integrated Science Agenda. This data layer addresses the forested wetland amount desired landscape endpoint for the forested wetland ecosystem in the Mississippi Alluvial Valley subgeography of the GCPO LCC. This data was created by reclassification of the 2011 National Land Cover Dataset (NLCD) to pull out only the woody wetlands class (90) from the NLCD dataset. We then overlaid the HUC12 watershed layer and calculated the total amount of forested wetland acreage within each watershed.

Executive summary: Tamarisk control and removal has become a priority of riparian ecosystem management, due in part to its potential negative impacts on stream flow and groundwater recharge. Among the most controversial, and potentially most effective tamarisk control approaches is the introduction of the tamarisk leaf beetle, Diorhabda carinulata. The beetle has spread throughout virtually the entire upper Colorado River Basin, established major populations at Lake Mead in 2012, and is now poised to expand into the lower Colorado River Basin concordant with documented evolutionary change in beetle developmental response that may enable survival in southern regions. Superimposed on this direct plant/herbivore relationship...
