These data are from a 1998 multibeam survey of the sea floor offshore of Shinnecock Inlet, New York. There are five datasets: bathymetry grid, shaded-relief image, backscatter intensity image, shaded-relief colored by backscatter intensity image, and trackline navigation. The bathymetry shows the shape of the sea floor. Of particular interest are the size, shape, and orientation of bed forms that may indicate sediment movement. The shaded-relief image provides a visualization of the bathymetry that accentuates small features that cannot be effectively shown as contours alone. The image of backscatter intensity provides qualitative information on the sediment texture and roughness of the sea floor. The image of shaded-relief...

These data are high-resolution bathymetry (riverbed elevation) and depth-averaged velocities in ASCII format, generated from hydrographic and velocimetric surveys of the Mississippi River near structure A6500 on Interstate 70 in St. Louis, Missouri, in 2009 and 2016. Hydrographic data were collected using a high-resolution multibeam echosounder mapping system (MBMS), which consists of a multibeam echosounder (MBES) and an inertial navigation system (INS) mounted on a marine survey vessel. Data were collected as the vessel traversed the river along planned survey lines distributed throughout the reach. Data collection software integrated and stored the depth data from the MBES and the horizontal and vertical position...

Geophysical and geological survey data were collected off Town Neck Beach in Sandwich, Massachusetts, in May and July 2016. Approximately 130 linear kilometers of subbottom (seismic-reflection) and 234-kilohertz interferometric sonar (bathymetric and backscatter) data were collected along with sediment samples, sea floor photographs, and (or) video at 26 sites within the geophysical survey area. Sediment grab samples were collected at 19 of the 26 sampling sites and video and (or) photographic imagery of the sea floor were taken at all 26 sites. These survey data are used to characterize the sea floor by identifying sediment-texture, seabed morphology, and underlying geologic structure and stratigraphy. Data collected...

Water quality in the Barnegat Bay estuary along the New Jersey coast is the focus of a multidisciplinary research project begun in 2011 by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. This narrow estuary is the drainage for the Barnegat Bay watershed and flushed by just three inlets connecting it to the Atlantic Ocean, is experiencing degraded water quality, algal blooms, loss of seagrass, and increases in oxygen-depletion events. The scale of the estuary and the scope of the problems within it required a regional approach to understand and model water circulation within the bay and adjacent ocean. A continuous elevation surface (terrain model) integrating...

The Hudson Shelf Valley is the submerged seaward extension of the ancestral Hudson River drainage system and is the largest physiographic feature on the Middle Atlantic continental shelf. The valley begins offshore of New York and New Jersey at about 30-meter (m) water depth, runs southerly and then southeasterly across the Continental Shelf, and terminates on the outer shelf at about 85-m water depth landward of the head of the Hudson Canyon. Portions of the 150-kilometer-long valley were surveyed in 1996, 1998, and 2000 using a Simrad EM1000 multibeam echosounder mounted on the Canadian Coast Guard ship Frederick G. Creed. The purpose of the multibeam echosounder surveys was to map the bathymetry and backscatter...

The US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is evaluating the placement of dredged material in the nearshore areas of Lake Michigan as a means to replenish sand at selected beaches. In order to elucidate the physical processes in the nearshore environment that transport and distribute sand to the beach, the USACE-Chicago District and the US Geological Survey (USGS) developed a plan for a beach nourishment study on Lake Michigan near Burns Harbor/Ogden Dunes, Indiana. As part of this plan, the USGS conducted hydrodynamic and bathymetric surveys of the study area before and after placement of dredged material in the nearshore zone. The planned placement of dredge material in the study area occurred between June 15, 2016...

A bathymetric survey of Norfork Lake, Arkansas-Missouri, was conducted in September-October, 2015, by the Lower Mississippi-Gulf Water Science Center of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) using methodologies for multi-beam sonar surveys similar to those described by Lee (2013) and Huizinga (2016). Point (XYZ) data from the bathymetric survey were merged with XYZ data collected during a March 2008 aerial LiDAR survey provided by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Little Rock District and stored in a feature dataset within the geodatabase. A terrain (digital terrain model, or DTM) was created from the XYZ data and stored in the geodatabase. Products derived from the DTM and stored in the geodatabase include a digital...

Staff from Alaska Earthquake Center, Geophysical Institute and Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys evaluated potential potential tsunami hazard for the communities of Kodiak, Womens Bay, and for the U.S. Coast Guard base on Kodiak Island by numerically modeling the extent of inundation from tsunami waves generated by hypothetical earthquake sources. Worst-case hypothetical scenarios are defined by analyzing results of a sensitivity study of the tsunami dynamics related to various slip distributions along the Alaska-Aleutian megathrust. The worst-case scenarios for the Kodiak communities are thought to be the subduction zone earthquakes offshore Kodiak Island with their greatest slip at 5-35 km (3.1-22...

Beaver Lake was constructed in 1966 on the White River in the northwest corner of Arkansas for flood control, hydroelectric power, public water supply, and recreation. The surface area of Beaver Lake is about 27,900 acres and approximately 449 miles of shoreline are at the conservation pool level (1,120 feet above the North American Vertical Datum of 1988). Sedimentation in reservoirs can result in reduced water storage capacity and a reduction in usable aquatic habitat. Therefore, accurate and up-to-date estimates of reservoir water capacity are important for managing pool levels, power generation, water supply, recreation, and downstream aquatic habitat. Many of the lakes operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers...
