These data describe observations of sea otter foraging behavior in Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve. Data consist of dive and surface times, success in prey retrieval, prey item, prey quantity, and size. Additionally, location of observations, and age class, sex, and pup status of the focal sea otter were also recorded.

Remote sensing technologies, such as high-resolution sonar, can be used to collect more detailed information about the benthic and water column characteristics of macro habitats in the Illinois River. Multibeam echosounders (MBES) collect multibeam and sidescan simultaneously, providing high-resolution images of the riverbed. Sidescan images, in raster format, show the recorded intensity of acoustic signal returns from the riverbed. The acoustic data were collected from the Easst Pit of Hanson Pits (where accessible) of the Marseilles reach June 27, 2018.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) collected hydroacoustic data of the St. Croix River adjacent to the Osceola (WI) boat ramp for hydrographic and benthic mapping prior to the reconstruction project implemented by the National Park Service (NPS). This dataset contains predicted geologic substrate information that was interpreted from combined sonar datasets. The shapefile contains a general description of interpreted surficial bottom type with its associated class code in the attribute table. Benthic substrate maps provide important physical characteristics that can be used in habitat modeling to guide management planning of restoration and conservation efforts.

Hydroacoustic (sonar) data were collected for the Mississippi, St. Croix, and Minnesota Rivers for the development of high-resolution bathymetry and sidescan imagery. Small areas containing priority mussel habitat had additional collection efforts to map water velocities and bottom composition. Combining these data in a GIS can provide key components to characterizing physical benthic habitat for native mussels in a riverine environment. This information is highly desired by the National Park Service to more accurately assess environmental factors that influence native mussel distribution. OBIS-USA brings together marine biological occurrence data – recorded observations of identifiable marine species at a known time and place, collected primarily from U.S. Waters or with U.S. funding. Coordinated by the Core Science, Analytics, Synthesis, and Libraries (CSAS&L) Program of the United States Geological Survey (USGS), OBIS-USA, strives to meet national data integration and dissemination needs for marine data about organisms and ecosystems. OBIS-USA is part of an international data sharing network (Ocean Biogeographic Information System, OBIS) coordinated by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission, of UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Science and Cultural Organization International Oceanographic...

Seafloor character was derived from interpretations of lidar data available for the mainland coast within the study area from the California State Waters Mapping Program (Johnson and others, 2012; Johnson and others, 2013a; Johnson and others, 2013b; Johnson and others, 2013c). The number of substrate classes was reduced because rugosity could not be derived for all areas. In 1995, the Missouri River Benthic Fishes Study was initiated to provide improved information on Missouri River fish populations and how alterations might affect them. Missouri River Benthic Fishes Study (MRBFS) documented annual patterns, habitat, and water quality associations of 21 Missouri River benthic fish species based on relative abundance, including sicklefin and sturgeon chub from 1996 to 1998. Data sets include capture data and habitat characterization. The objective was to evaluate population structure and habitat use of benthic fishes along the entire mainstem Missouri River, exclusive of reservoirs.

These data are part of the Gulf Watch Alaska (GWA) long-term monitoring program and describe mussel sampling and observations conducted in the northern Gulf of Alaska. This dataset consists of six comma separated files (.csv): 1) mussel sampling site layout information, 2) mussel counts for mussels greater than 20 millimeters in a quadrat, 3) mussel size measurements for mussels greater than 20 millimeters in a quadrat, 4) mussel counts for all mussels collected from core samples, 5) mussel size frequencies for all mussels collected from core samples, and 6) list of Gulf Watch Alaska principal investigators and collaborators.
In 2014, the USGS Lake Erie Biological Station participated in the Coordinated Science and Monitoring Initiative (CMSI) program, a program founded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Environment Canada in the 1990s as a means to focus collaborative research attention on one of the five Great Lakes each year (on a rotating schedule) as a means to increase scientific knowledge for Great Lakes restoration. The Lake Erie survey examined the food web across a nearshore to offshore gradient, matching the sampling design the preceding USGS studies of the other four Great Lakes (2010-2013). We sampled all trophic levels in all three lake basins across multiple seasons in order to determine nutrient availability...

This dataset presents the results of analysis of aquatic biota tissue samples, collected over multiple sampling events from in from 2007 to 2014 at three sites (Las Vegas Bay, Overton Arm, and Boulder Basin) in Lake Mead National Recreational Area. The tissue samples were analyzed for concentrations of Carbon 13 and Nitrogen 15 isotopes by the University of California, Davis in Davis, California. Data are presented in 1 spreadsheet worksheet that is organized by year, location, and taxa. General trophic level (Vander Zanden and Rasmussen, 1999) and calculations of benthic reliance (Umek and others, 2010) also are included. Combined data from sampling events in 2007 and 2008 previously were published in Umek and...

A data release containing information on macroinvertebrate communities and sediment toxicity in the Buffalo River Area of Concern (AOC) and reference areas immediately upstream of the AOC collected during 2017 and 2020. Macroinvertebrate community samples were collected using bottom-deployed multiplate artificial substrate samplers and organisms were identified to the lowest practical taxonomic resolution and used to calculate metrics of biological integrity following standard New York State Department of Environmental Conservation procedures. Bed sediments were collected using a petite Ponar dredge and used for toxicity tests with two test species, Chironomus dilutus and Hyalella azteca, following USEPA test methods...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) collected hydroacoustic data of the St. Croix River adjacent to the Osceola (WI) boat ramp for hydrographic and benthic mapping prior to the reconstruction project implemented by the National Park Service (NPS). This dataset contains reference locations that were obtained while collecting ground-truth information for geologic substrate. For statistical analysis, the locations were selected using random point sampling. The shapefile contains sample location coordinates, a general description of interpreted surficial sediment type, and an indication of mussel presence/absence in the attribute table. These geospatial locations directly correspond to the "still-images" dataset.

The data represent counts of individuals of a suite of kelp and macroinvertebrate species on fixed 10-meter by 2-meter benthic transects on permanent subtidal monitoring sites around San Nicolas Island between 1980 and 2018. There were six sites, each of which had five 20 square meter band transects. The sites were usually monitored twice per year, most often in October and April. The species list is as follows: Stephanocystis osmundacea (formerly Cystoseira osmundacea), Laminaria spp., Eisenia arborea, Pterygophora californica, Macrocystis pyrifera greater than 1 m tall, Macrocystis pyrifera less than 1 m tall, Juvenile Laminariales (genus uncertain), Mesocentrotus franciscanus (formerly Strongylocentrotus franciscanus),...
