Deep-sea corals can create a highly complex, three-dimensional structure that facilitates sediment accumulation and influences adjacent sediment environments through altered hydrodynamic regimes. Infaunal communities adjacent to different coral types, including reef-building scleractinian corals and individual colonies of octocorals, are known to differ from background non-coral soft-sediment communities, often exhibiting higher macrofaunal densities and distinct community structure. Deep-sea corals create complex habitats that support distinct sediment communities. Several deep-sea coral habitats were impacted by the 2010 Deepwater Horizon spill, and recovery of associated sediment communities may take several years. While spill-associated organic enrichment may lead to increased abundances of tolerant taxa, toxic effects of the spill may lead to declines in sensitive groups. Benthic invertebrate communities are monitored because the composition of those communities can affect and be affected by the water quality of an aquatic system. Benthic communities use and sometimes regulate the cycling of essential elements (for example, carbon). Between 1900 and 1932, a copper (Cu) mine operated near Gay, Michigan, along the shore of Lake Superior, discharged approximately 22.8 million metric tons of waste material known as ‘stamp sands’ (SS) to a nearby beach. This pile of SS has migrated via wind and rain along the beaches in northern Grand Traverse Bay and into Buffalo Reef, an important spawning area for Lake Trout and Lake Whitefish. During their first summer, these newly spawned fish consume benthic invertebrates and zooplankton in nearby beach habitats. Data to support the site characterization of locations sampled along the continental shelf and slope of the western U.S. coast off Washington, Oregon and California during the EXPRESS RL1905 expedition in 2019. Data consisted of tissue samples from fauna, sediments and particulate organic matter. These samples were analyzed for stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes to examine food web ecology. Additional observational data were collected through video analyses with efforts focused on documenting counts of fauna other than corals, sponges and fishes, as well as general habitat characteristics.

This data release contains cyanotoxin concentrations for microcystins, cylindrospermopsins, anatoxins, and saxitoxins assessed using Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assays (ELISA) on 363 samples collected from 82 surface-water sites located in the Cascade Range in Oregon, and eight sites located outside of the Oregon Cascade Range in Washington and California, during 2016-2020. Three sample types were assessed: 1) benthic colonies and mats of cyanobacteria (n=109), 2) plankton net tows (n=90), and 3) Solid Phase Adsorption Toxin Tracking samplers (SPATTs)(n=164).

This is a tabular data set that includes intensity and saturation measurements of benthic invertebrates, sample residue, and preservative from samples stained with three fluorescent dyes for the development of a fluorescent staining method to enhance picking efficiency. This data set also contains data evaluating a selected fluorescent method's effects on picking efficiency and comparison to standard non-fluorescent methods for sorting benthic invertebrates.

San Francisco Bay and Estuary is largely urbanized and developed, and the southern bay is the most urbanized with many sources of nutrients, many concerns that the system might become eutrophic, and many questions about how South Bay has maintained its relatively good health. The hypotheses for why South Bay is not eutrophic, where other bays have not been so fortunate, include high bivalve grazing that limits net phytoplankton growth and high turbidity which also limits the phytoplankton growth rate. Diet contents of Deepwater Sculpin (Myoxocephalus thompsonii) were identified, enumerated, and measured to monitor the changes in the offshore benthic fish community within Lake Huron. Collections were made using a 21-m headrope with a 4.76mm square mesh cod-end with 10 minute contour trawl tows.. Chemosynthetic ecosystems in the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) support dense communities of seep megafaunal invertebrates that rely on endosymbiotic bacteria for nutrition. Distinct infaunal communities are associated with the biogenic habitats created by seep biota, where habitat heterogeneity and sediment geochemistry influence local macrofaunal community structure. Here we examine the variance in infaunal communities in the GOM with respect to depth, sediment geochemistry parameters, and distance to known seep habitats.
