The 2008 - Present Ecosystem History of South Florida's Estuaries Database contains listings of all sites (modern and core) and modern monitoring site survey information (water chemistry, floral and faunal data, etc.). Three general types of data are contained within this database: 1) Modern Field Data (2008-present), 2) Master list of location information on all modern sites, and 3) Core data - location information. Data are available for modern sites (from 2008 to present) and cores in the general areas of Florida Bay, Biscayne Bay, and the southwest (Florida) coastal mangrove estuaries. Specific sites in the Florida Bay area include Taylor Creek, Bob Allen Key, Russell Bank, Pass Key, Whipray Basin, Rankin Bight,...
Comma-separated values (.csv) file containing data related to mercury concentrations in dragonfly samples from U.S. National Parks collected as part of the Dragonfly Mercury Project (DMP). This data release supersedes Eagles-Smith, C.A., Nelson, S.J., Flanagan-Pritz, C.M., Willacker Jr., J.J., and Klemmer, A.J., 2018, Total Mercury Concentrations in Dragonfly Larvae from U.S. National Parks (ver. 7.0, October 2021): U.S. Geological Survey data release, https://doi.org/10.5066/P9TK6NPT. Airborne electromagnetic (AEM) and magnetic survey data along four flight lines were collected in Everglades National Park, Florida as part of a larger survey. Data were collected during October 2001. These lines, totaling 95.2 line-kilometers, repeated the path of four lines from earlier AEM survey collected in December 1994 (released under USGS Open-File Report 02-101 downloadable at https://pubs.er.usgs.gov/publication/ofr02101). Electromagnetic data were acquired with Dighem VRES frequency-domain system. Magnetic data were collected with a Scintrex CS2 cesium-vapor magnetometer. The nominal elevation of the electromagnetic system was 30 m. This data release includes raw and processed AEM data. This release also...

Airborne electromagnetic (AEM) and magnetic survey data, a total of 3065 line-kilometers, were collected during October 2001 in two survey blocks and four repeated lines from an earlier survey. The largest area, Block 1 totaling 2692.2 line-kilometers was flown over Big Cypress Preserve, smaller Block 2 along 277.1 line-kilometers was flown near the town of Homestead, and four lines totaling 95.2 line-kilometers were flown over Everglades National Park. The lines over Everglades National Park repeated the path of four lines from an earlier AEM survey collected in December 1994 (released under USGS Open-File Report 02-101 downloadable at https://pubs.er.usgs.gov/publication/ofr02101). Electromagnetic data were acquired...

Entire photo-documented sequence from 01 June 2021–09 September 2021, including novel interactions between intraguild predators in southern Florida – the native bobcat (Lynx rufus) and the invasive Burmese python (Python bivittatus). A bobcat depredated an unguarded Burmese python nest and subsequently the python exhibited nest defense behavior following the return of both animals to the nest. First, a bobcat discovers an unguarded nest then proceeds to depredate, cache, and uncover the eggs over several days. The bobcat returns to find the female python back on the nest and later proceeds to swipe at the snake. After biologists attempted to the nest but leave the camera, the bobcat returns to scavenge discarded,...

This data release provides data for quantifying the aquatic export of total carbon in a cypress swamp within the Big Cypress National Preserve, and is part of a larger carbon budget study. The U.S. Geological Survey operated two continuous streamflow and water-quality monitoring stations within the Big Cypress National Preserve in southern Florida from September 2015 to October 2017. Site-specific regression models were developed using continuously measured specific conductance and concomitant discretely collected total carbon (dissolved organic carbon, dissolved inorganic carbon, and particulate carbon) samples to calculate continuous concentrations of total carbon. Total carbon loads were calculated by multiplying...

This dataset contains morphometric information from Burmese pythons collected from an invasive population in southern Florida between 1995-2021. Scientists from the U.S. Geological Survey and the National Park Service curated this dataset as a repository for records of Burmese pythons found on or nearby federal lands in southern Florida, including Everglades National Park, Big Cypress National Preserve, Biscayne National Park, and Crocodile Lake National Wildlife Refuge. As such, numerous entities actively or incidentally involved in python research or management activities contributed specimens and/or data to this dataset, including but not limited to the U.S. Geological Survey, National Park Service, U.S. Fish...

Airborne electromagnetic (AEM) and magnetic survey data were collected in Big Cypress National Preserve, Florida as part of a larger survey. Data were collected during October 2001. The Big Cypress National Preserve part was the largest of three segments, totaling 2692.2 line-kilometers. Electromagnetic data were acquired with Dighem VRES frequency-domain system. Magnetic data were collected with a Scintrex CS2 cesium-vapor magnetometer. The line spacing was 400 m and several tie lines were flown. The nominal elevation of electromagnetic system was 30 m. This data release includes raw and processed AEM data. This release also includes unprocessed and processed magnetic data that have been drift corrected.

This dataset consists of methane flux data collected with eddy covariance methods; and methane ebullition data collected with gas traps, time-lapse cameras, and capacitance probe measurements. Inferred bubble production and soil volumetric gas content data from capacitance probe measurements also are included. These data were collected from July to November 2016 at two forested wetlands in Big Cypress National Preserve, Florida. Gas trap, time-lapse camera, and capacitance probe data were collected at platforms located within the source area of each eddy covariance tower in forested wetlands. Each platform consisted of an array of gas traps, one time-lapse camera, and one capacitance probe. The location (geographic...

Invasive Burmese pythons (Python bivittatus) have been reproducing in the Florida Everglades since the 1980s. Introduction of the species was either due to unintentional escapes or intentional releases from snakes obtained through the commercial pet trade. Burmese pythons have caused a precipitous decline in small mammal populations in south Florida. To better understand the invasive population, two mitochondrial loci (mtDNA; 1398 bps) were sequenced on 426 snakes and 22 microsatellites were genotyped on 389 snakes. Concatenated cytochrome b and cytochrome oxidase 1 mtDNA sequences produced six haplotypes with a nucleotide and haplotype diversity of π=0.002 and h=0.097, respectively. The dominant haplotype was highly...
