Bighorn sheep distribution and winter ranges were reviewed and updated during 2002. The layer does not necessarily include overall distribution or winter range within Tribal lands/Indian Reservations or National Park Service lands. Overall distribution polygons represent general or year round habitat. Winter range polygons represent areas occupied by the species from November 15 to March 1. The polygon attribute to select overall distribution and/or winter range areas for big horn sheep is BHS_USE.

This data set represents the 2010 bighorn sheep huntarea and herdunit boundaries for Wyoming. The layer was originally digitized at a scale of 1:100,000, using USGS 1:100,000 DRGs as a backdrop for heads up digitizing. Updates are currently done by selecting needed features from other layers, including roads, streams, HUCs, etc. Huntarea boundary descriptions are part of hunting regulations, which are approved and published annually by the Wyoming Game and Fish Commission. When needed, the 2008 edition (First Edition) of the Wyoming Road and Recreation Atlas (Benchmark Maps) was consulted for road information.

Note: The data were created by dissolving on the HERDUNIT attribute of the bhs08hh data. This data set represents the 2010 bighorn sheep huntarea and herdunit boundaries for Wyoming. The layer was originally digitized at a scale of 1:100,000, using USGS 1:100,000 DRGs as a backdrop for heads up digitizing. Updates are currently done by selecting needed features from other layers, including roads, streams, HUCs, etc. Huntarea boundary descriptions are part of hunting regulations, which are approved and published annually by the Wyoming Game and Fish Commission. This dataset represents DESERT BIGHORN SHEEP use areas in Utah as determined by wildlife biologists during 2001, with supplemental additions motivated by the Richfield BLM Resource Management Planning process in the spring of 2004, in November 2004, and again in March 2005. In May 2006 the dataset was converted from a Critical, High, Substantial and Limited value system to a Crucial/Substantial value system. Additional updates for the layer were made in January 2008, in cooperation with the local BLM biologists.

Barriers were characterized as the minimum distance from forested regions, highways and perennial rivers. Forested regions were extracted from GAP/EVT landcover data by isolating pixels that were classed as ‘forest’. Only forested regions having canopy cover of >80% were selected by using the Landfire canopy cover dataset. TIGER road data was used to identify highways. The USGS National Hydrography Dataset was used to extract perennial stream features. Proximity analyses were applied to all development datasets and scored. This data set represents the 2008 bighorn sheep seasonal range boundaries for Wyoming. Seasonal range delineations depict lands that are important in each season for certain biological processes within a herd unit. Seasonal range boundaries are based on long-term observation data, specific research projects, and professional judgement. Ranges are digitized at a scale of 1:100,000 using USGS 1:100,000 DRGs as a backdrop for heads up digitizing, and are revised as needed by the Wyoming Game and Fish Department. Current seasonal range definitions are based on a 1990 document drafted by the Wyoming Chapter of The Wildlife Society in cooperation with the Wyoming Game and Fish Department and federal land agencies.
