Album caption: Contorted gneiss on the north rim of Black Canyon near Colorado State Highway 92. Contortions were caused by flowage under great heat and pressure in the depths of the earth's crust. Complicated structures such as these are confined to the Precambrian rocks. Light-colored bands are mostly feldspar and quartz, dark bands are mostly quartz and biotite.
