This dataset contains morphological measures of 21 Pacific walruses in human care in the United States, Belgium, and Germany measured directly and via an aerially mounted camera in 2022 and 2023. Six individuals were measured twice: once at their typical annual lowest body mass and once at their typical annual maximum body mass. The remaining 15 individuals were measured on one occasion. Straight-line linear measures of width behind the front flippers and at the hip, full girth behind the front flippers, straight line length, snout width, and body mass were collected as direct, physical measures. Straight line body length, width behind the front flippers, width at the hip, and body area footprint were measured from...

These were data collected from polar bears from the southern Beaufort Sea during the spring between 2004 and 2016. Data include individual bear identification, age and sex class, capture date, capture year, open water season lengths, melt season length, and diet composition (expressed as a percentage of prey species). These data were used to determine whether polar bear diets have recently changed or remained stable over time.

This dataset contains isotope results of stable isotope (δ13C and δ15N) and radicoarbon (F14C) analyses of muscle tissue from fish collected in the nearshore Beaufort Sea, Alaska in summers 2017-2019. Version History: First release: October 2022 Revised: January 2024 (ver. 2.0)

These were data collected from polar bears from the Southern Beaufort Sea during the spring between 2013 and 2015. Data include individual identification, demographic characteristics, year, status for the current and prior year regarding use of land, concentrations of stress response and reproductive hormones, blood-based biomarker measures indicative of fasting, body mass index, and body condition. These data were used to assess factors influencing variation in measures of innate immunity, physiological stress, and concentrations in stress-response and reproductive hormones in polar bears.

This dataset contains morphological measures of Pacific walruses sampled in the Chukchi and Bering Seas between 1972 and 1991. From 1972 through 1991 the Soviet Union employed industrial methods to harvest and process Pacific walruses to enhance the Russian Far East economy. Under the oversight of the Pacific branch of the Soviet All-Union Scientific Investigational Institute of Marine Fisheries and Oceanography (VNIRO), offshore harvesting crews worked from specialized marine mammal hunting ships (ZRS) throughout the spring, summer, and early autumn in the marginal sea ice habitats of the Bering and Chukchi Seas. They launched small (~7 m) wooden boats to approach walruses resting on ice pans, which were dispatched...

This dataset is two tables with data collected and derived from polar bears sampled in Alaska’s southern Beaufort Sea during 2008-2019. Collected data includes demographic and morphometric information and derived data includes mercury concentrations in hair samples. Ancillary data includes gut microbiome abundances, diversity indices, calculated body condition, and the proportions of prey species detected in individual bear diets. These data were used to determine whether gut microbiota community richness and diversity were associated with diet-acquired mercury.

This dataset contains data from the use of bioelectrical impedance analysis and deuterium injection as methods to estimate the body composition of female polar bears in the southern Beaufort Sea subpopulation. Data are provided on bioelectrical impedance resistance measures, the enrichment level of deuterium oxide that was injected and measured in blood samples, and morphological measures.

Understanding evolutionary processes that drive population dynamics is critical in ecology. Measuring the performance-density relationship in long-lived mammalian species demands long-term data, limiting the ability to observe such mechanisms. We tested density-dependent (intrinsic) and density-independent (extrinsic) drivers of body composition of grizzly bears (Ursus arctos) in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem over two decades.

This data release contains one table which includes the concentration of cortisol from polar bear (Ursus maritimus) hair and morphometric data from some of the captured bears. We assayed concentration of cortisol in hair (HCC) from polar bears captured in the Alaska Beaufort, Bering and Chukchi Seas during 1983–1989 and 2004–2016. Fields include the individual polar bear identifier (bearID), the date (sampleDate) and time (sampleTime) of sample collection, location that the sample was collected (latitude and longitude), agency that collected the sample (agency), sex of the polar bear (sex), the age of the polar bear at the time of sample collection (bearAge), categorical indicator of the age of the bear from which...
