This data set represents the extent, approximate location and type of wetlands and deepwater habitats in the conterminous United States. These data delineate the areal extent of wetlands and surface waters as defined by Cowardin et al. (1979). Certain wetland habitats are excluded from the National mapping program because of the limitations of aerial imagery as the primary data source used to detect wetlands. These habitats include seagrasses or submerged aquatic vegetation that are found in the intertidal and subtidal zones of estuaries and near shore coastal waters. Some deepwater reef communities (coral or tuberficid worm reefs) have also been excluded from the inventory. These habitats, because of their depth,...

Due to the quantity and complexity of the data, wetlands and riparian data only displays at 1:250,000 scale and greater. For wetland information visit www.fws.gov/wetlands/The original wetland maps were produced as topical overlays using U.S. Geological Survey topographic maps as the base. Thus, the data are intended for use in publications, at a scale of 1:24,000 or smaller. Due to the scale, the primary intended use is for regional and watershed data display and analysis, rather than specific project data analysis. The wetlands data were neither designed nor intended to represent legal or regulatory products. These data were developed in conjunction with the Cowardin et al. publication (Cowardin, L.M., V. Carter,...

Wetlands of Russia, from the Land Resources of Russia project. Wetlands are defined in this dataset as wet (bordering on water saturation) areas intermediate between land and water (Considine and Considine, 1994). They are the ecosystems that include sea surface, lakes, rivers, coastal vegetation, bogs, and alluvial and delta complexes. Wetlands play an important part in landscape stabilization, natural environmental cleaning, the traditional land use of small groups of people, and biodiversity conservation. The wetlands of Russia have a large complex of ecosystems. Three general groups of wetlands are recognized, organized by their ecosystem types and location in the landscape: marine, inland, and anthropogenic...

Transient numerical simulations of the Glacial Lake Agassiz Peatland near the Red Lakes in Northern Minnesota were constructed to evaluate observed reversals in vertical ground-water flow. Seasonal weather changes were introduced to a ground-water flow model by varying evapotranspiration and recharge over time. Vertical hydraulic reversals, driven by changes in recharge and evapotranspiration were produced in the simulated peat layer. These simulations indicate that the high specific storage associated with the peat is an important control on hydraulic reversals. Seasonally driven vertical flow is on the order of centimeters in the deep peat, suggesting that seasonal vertical advective fluxes are not significant...
