This Benthic Invertebrate Community Analysis dataset, a conceptual subgroup of the Lake Erie Ecological Investigations (LEEI) dataset, focuses on the benthic invertebrates sampled at Areas of Concern (AOCs) on Lake Erie. Per the Quality Assurance Project Plan (QAPP), the invertebrate samples were taken from sediments remaining from the sediment analysis. Identification of the invertebrates was completed by the same invertebrate taxonomist for both the 1998-2000 evaluation and 1986-87 historical evaluation (Smith et al. 1994) for increased consistency. Oligochaetes were identified to species if possible, chironomids were identified to genus, as adult specimens are needed for specific identification, and other taxa...

This data release pertains to a seepage investigation and dye tracing study conducted in the Big Creek watershed of Newton County, Arkansas. The seepage dataset includes geospatial files of discharge measurement points and zero-flow observations along with vector lines delineating losing and gaining stream reaches. The dye tracing dataset consists of geospatial files of monitoring sites, dye injection location, and dye flow paths. Hydrologic systems in karst environments have a high degree of interconnectivity between surface water and groundwater systems. Because of this interconnectivity, activities which occur on the surface in karst environments have a direct impact on the water quality and quantity of karst...

Background: The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) plan to obtain data on chemical contaminants in fish from multiple Areas of Concern (AOCs) in New York State and use this information to evaluate fish consumption advisories, which are a critical component of most removal criteria for “Restriction on Fish and Wildlife Consumption” beneficial use impairments (BUI). The first project in the Buffalo River AOC will help determine if current fish consumption advisories are appropriate, if they can be modified, and if they support or do not support BUI removal as recommended in the June 2014 “Buffalo River AOC: A Monitoring Plan for the Delisting of...
This data release contains numerous shapefiles that describe baseline characterization of the physical attributes of the riverine ecosystems in two national parks – Ozark National Scenic Riverways (ONSR), Missouri, and Buffalo National River (BNR), Arkansas. The individual metadata associated with each shapefile describe in detail the specific process steps, source inputs for the data, and the specific river the data characterizes.

The Buffalo National River in Arkansas was established as the first national river in 1972 and later designated as an Extraordinary Resource Water with a Wild and Scenic section in the upper portion. The Buffalo National River's water quality database indicates nitrogen compounds have increased since the 1980s. This study aimed to investigate the potential threat of elevated nutrients and its association with freshwater mussel declines in the Buffalo National River through laboratory and in situ exposures. We evaluated (1) the toxicity of receiving water and sediment samples containing elevated ammonia and nitrate to native juvenile Lampsilis reeveiana (Arkansas Brokenray) and three common aquatic test species (Ceriodaphnia...

This Sediment Analysis dataset, a conceptual subgroup of the Lake Erie Ecological Investigations (LEEI) dataset, focuses on the sediments sampled at Areas of Concern (AOCs) on Lake Erie. Per the Quality Assurance Project Plan (QAPP), sediment collections were a composite of at least five randomly selected samples collected from each site. Per an internal summary report, sediment samples were collected using a stainless steel Eckman dredge. Analytical methods and QA/QC were directed by the Patuxent Analytical Control Facility (PACF) of the US Fish and Wildlife Service. Per Dora Passino-Reader, the Geochemical & Environmental Research Group at Texas A&M University, College Station performed the analytical chemistry...

Background : Contaminated bed sediments in much of the Buffalo River AOC (Figure 1A, 1B) were removed (dredged) between 2011 and 2015. Plans to monitor and assess the effectiveness of this management action on 8 of 9 beneficial-use-impairments (BUI), included the benthic macroinvertebrate (benthos) BUI, were revised by the Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper (Riverkeeper, 2014). Funds needed to implement various monitoring efforts proposed in this plan, however, were not available at that time. The USGS-New York Water Science Center (NYWSC) and the NYSDEC propose a collaborative study to evaluate multiple lines of evidence (toxicity of sediments and the condition of benthic macroinvertebrate communities) to determine...

This data set is a compilation of data from two sampling efforts (2010 and 2014), focused on determining the presence and distribution of organic contaminants throughout the United States portion of the Great Lakes watershed. Water-borne contaminants were monitored in 69 tributaries of the Great Lakes using semipermeable membrane devices (SPMDs), and polar organic chemical integrative samplers (POCIS). Analyses included 185 chemicals (143 detected) including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), legacy and current-use pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) and organophosphate fire retardants, pharmaceuticals, fragrances, industrial chemicals, surfactants, and others.
