This data set presents the results of conducting Mercury Intrusion Porosimetry on core samples of the mudstone underlying the Naval Air Warfare Center, West Trenton, New Jersey. The core samples were selected from the continuous core collected from boreholes 83BR-89BR.
Boreholes were drilled in 2017 and 2018 in Redwell Basin, a headwater catchment underlain by mineralized and hydrothermally altered sedimentary rock in the Elk Mountains near the town of Crested Butte, Colorado. Site locations and drilling procedures are documented under the main page of this data release. Borehole geophysical data were collected in boreholes MW1, MW1UZ, and MW2.1 as open holes prior to well construction. Logging was performed by a combination of USGS and Mount Sopris Instruments (MW1) and University of Wyoming (MW1UZ and MW2.1) staff. Four boreholes (MW1, MW1UZ, MW2, MW2.1) were drilled in the fall of 2017 and summer of 2018 in upper Redwell Basin, a headwater catchment underlain by hydrothermally altered sedimentary rock in the Elk Mountains near the town of Crested Butte, Colorado. The boreholes were continuously cored using a wireline HQ-sized coring system and sample a combination of Quaternary-aged surficial colluvium and the Cretaceous-aged Mesaverde Formation. Twenty-four piston cores (and associated trigger cores) were collected from the source zone of the Currituck Landslide Complex and upper slope adjacent to Baltimore Canyon by the U.S. Geological Survey and the University of Rhode Island Department of Ocean Engineering during an eight-day cruise aboard the R/V Hugh R. Sharp in September/October of 2012. The drill core is from the Stillwater Complex, Montana and was drilled from 1969 to 1977. The core was logged from 1979 to 1993. This data set presents the lithologic interpretation of rock cores from boreholes 83BR-89BR collected from the mudstone aquifer underlying the Naval Air Warfare Center (NAWC), West Trenton, NJ. Continuous core from these boreholes was collected and visually interpreted to identify characteristics of the depositional environment of the mudstone. Three types of mudstone were identified: a black-fissile mudstone (BLK-FIS); a gray-laminated mudstone (GRY-LAM); and a gray massive mudstone (GRY-MAS). The recent completion of the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Hurricane and Storm Damage Risk Reduction System (HSDRRS) for New Orleans has effectively blocked surface water exchange between Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge (BSNWR) and the surrounding Lake(s) Pontchartrain and Borgne and the Gulf of Mexico to which it was once connected.
