The Terrestrial Environmental Observation Network (TEON) is intended to meet the need for asustainable environmental observing network for northern Alaska. TEON is organized aroundrepresentative focal watersheds (Figure 1). TEON will collect, distribute, and synthesize long-termobservational data needed to detect and forecast effects of a changing climate, hydrology, andpermafrost regime on wildlife, habitat, and infrastructure in northern Alaska.

Ideal observation sites are located near tributary-mainstem confluences and provide frequent,synchronous measurements of physical, chemical, and biological attributes. This “nested watershed”design supports characterization of environmental conditions adjacent to the sampling stations, whileinstream hydrological measurements will reflect both local conditions and inputs from upstream. TEON observations sites are stratified by ecoregions, so we can aggregate data sets across the network to characterize conditions at the ecoregion scale.

These polygon features represent digitization of the glacier margins for the 37 named glaciers of Glacier National Park (GNP) and two glaciers on U.S. Forest Service’s Flathead National Forest land, derived from 2005 NAIP imagery. The polygons represent only the main body portion of each glacier as it appeared in 2005 NAIP imagery. Disconnected patches are not included as this dataset represents only the main body features of the named glaciers in GNP and environs. Polygons were digitized from NAIP imagery acquired on the following source dates: 20050731, 20050826, 20050827. Surface-based 2D electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) surveys were used to investigate the distribution of permafrost at wetland sites on the alluvial plain north of the Tanana River, 20 km southwest of Fairbanks, Alaska, in June and September 2014. The sites contained habitat types characteristic of interior Alaska, including thermokarst bog, forested permafrost plateau, and a rich fen. These habitats range from treed to open and vary in groundcover vegetation and peat thickness. Individual surveys used a cable with 56 electrodes at 2-m spacing. These polygon features represent the maximum extent of glaciers in Glacier National Park and two glaciers on U.S. Forest Service’s Flathead National Forest land during the peak of the Little Ice Age (mid-nineteenth century). Glacial margins are based on moraine deposits that result from active glaciation, and do not depict perennial snow and ice. The criteria used for determining which moraines constituted a former glacier were a) whether a terminal moraine was present, and b) whether the glacier area was five aces or more. This data release consists of digitized glacier margins that represent the maximum extent of glaciers in Glacier National Park (GNP) and two glaciers on U.S. Forest Service’s Flathead National Forest land during the peak of the Little Ice Age. TEON uses a “nested” approach to data collection. The smallest unit within TEON is a Station. Stationsinclude discrete sampling locations or units (e.g., plot or transect) where repeated measures of a givenvariable are collected to create a time-series. Data collected at a station may be relevant to localconditions (e.g., soil temperature at a given site) or applicable to a larger area (e.g., streamgage locatedat the lower end of a watershed). A Site is a collection of stations that are typically located within closeproximity to each other. Sites are grouped into Watersheds. Watersheds will encompass many ecotypes and span multiple ecoregions. Watersheds in aggregate form the TEON network.

This data release is a collection of data and field notes documenting snow and ice changes on South Cascade Glacier, Washington, USA. The field records relate to glaciological research and reflect evolving interpretations of glacier mass balance, climatology, hydrology, and other glacier-related research conducted at the site between 1957 to 2022 in association with the USGS Benchmark Glacier Project. Notebooks have been scanned in their entirety in PDF format. The Terrestrial Environmental Observation Network (TEON) is an effort to establish a sustainable environmental observing network of northern Alaska. TEON will focus work in watersheds that collectively represent the diversity of landscape settings at the ecoregional scale, take advantage of existing science infrastructure and logistics capacity, and provide opportunities to build on existing long-term data sets. Candidate watersheds for TEON include Agashashok River, Barrow/Meade River, Fish/Judy Creek, Hulahula/Jago River, Kokolik River, Kuparuk River, and Upper Koyukuk River.
