Archived samples of blue grouse (Dendragapus obscurus) gizzard contents, inclusive of grit, collected yearly between 1959 and 1970 were analyzed for cadmium, lead, zinc, and copper content. Approximately halfway through the 12-year sampling period, an open-pit copper mine began activities, then ceased operations 2 years later. Thus the archived samples provided a unique opportunity to determine if avian gizzard contents, inclusive of grit, could reveal patterns in the anthropogenic deposition of trace metals associated with mining activities. Gizzard concentrations of cadmium and copper strongly coincided with the onset of opening and the closing of the pit mining activity. Gizzard zinc and lead demonstrated significant...
This data release provides descriptions of more than 100 mining districts, mines, and mineral occurrences (deposits and prospects) within the United States that are reported to contain enrichments of rhenium (Re). These mineral occurrences include mined deposits, exploration prospects, and other occurrences with notable concentrations of rhenium. The inclusion of a particular mineral occurrence in this database is not meant to imply that it has economic potential. Rather, these occurrences were included to capture the distribution and characteristics of the known, reported rhenium occurrences in the United States. Rhenium is one of the rarest elements in the Earth's crust. Most rhenium occurs in the mineral molybdenite,...

Tree swallow, Tachycineta bicolor, nestlings were collected from 76 sites in the Great Lakes which included multiple sites at 27 Areas of Concern (AOCs) and 12 sites not listed as AOCs from 2010 to 2015. Livers were harvested and analyzed for 21 elements. Mercury concentrations differed among AOCs; however, all livers analyzed had concentrations well within background and generally comparable or lower than most sites outside of the Great Lakes. Mercury, the only element specifically identified in the designation of AOCs, does not seem to pose a threat to birds at any of the AOCs monitored. In contrast, selenium (Se) concentrations were elevated at sites on the southwest shore of Lake Michigan to levels that could...

The U.S. Geological Survey is monitoring metal concentrations in streambed sediment pre- and post-dam removal in the lower Klamath River basin. Concentrations of aluminum, arsenic, cadmium, cobalt, chromium, copper, iron, potassium, magnesium, manganese, nickel, lead, titanium, vanadium and zinc were sampled at 10 mainstem sites, four tributaries and two reservoirs. Mainstem and tributary collections occurred once annually in 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2022. Reservoir sediment samples (Copco and Iron Gate) were collected in 2020.

Brown trout, Salmo trutta, exposed to heavy metals (mainly Cd and Zn) for at least 2 years in the Eagle River, Colorado, were examined for liver size and activity of the growth-promoting enzyme, ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) and compared to trout living in an uncontaminated site. Liver-somatic index (LSI) was greater for trout living in the uncontaminated site with the LSI of females being significantly greater than that of males. The LSI for females at the uncontaminated site was greater than that of females at the contaminated site, but males were not different statistically. ODC activity in the livers of both males and females was lower at the contaminated site. However, males and females did not differ with...

This data release provides multi-element data for drill core samples from the Mesoproterozoic Nonesuch Formation and Copper Harbor Conglomerate at the Copperwood copper deposit, Michigan, USA. Copper was determined by assay, and sulfur by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) after aqua regia digestion for most samples. Multi-element whole rock analyses were determined for selected samples. The Copperwood copper deposit is a sediment-hosted stratiform copper deposit in the Presque Isle Syncline of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The deposit has a 2018 mineral resource estimate of 42.2 million metric tons (Mt) of measured plus indicated mineral resources in the Lower Copper Bearing Sequence...

The exposure of white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus) to lead and cadmium and the potential associated toxic effects were examined at three sites contaminated with lead in the Southeast Missouri Lead Mining District and at a reference site. Mice from the contaminated sites showed evidence of oxidative stress and red-blood cell δ-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase (ALAD) activity was depressed by an average of 68% at the most contaminated site. However, histological examinations of the liver and kidney, cytologic examination of blood smears and biomarkers of lipid peroxidation and DNA damage failed to show evidence of toxic effects from lead. The biomagnification ratio of cadmium (hepatic concentration/ soil concentration)...

This dataset consists of records for over 1,500 mineral facilities in Africa and the Middle East. The mineral facilities include mines, plants, mills , or refineries of aluminum, cement, coal, copper, diamond, gold, iron and steel, nickel, platinum-group metals, salt, and silver, among others. Records include attributes such as commodity, country, site, company name, plant capacity if applicable, and generalized coordinates. The data were compiled from multiple sources, including the 2004 USGS Minerals Yearbook (Africa and Middle East volume), minerals statistics and information from the USGS minerals information Web site (http://minerals.usgs.gov/minerals/), and data collected by USGS minerals information country...
Geologists from the Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys (DGGS) Mineral Resources Section conducted four weeks of helicopter-supported mapping and fieldwork from June 26 through July 24, 2013. The Styx River project in the Lime Hills C-1 Quadrangle was part of the State-funded Airborne Geophysical/Geological Mineral Inventory (AGGMI) program as part of the State's Strategic Minerals Assessment Project, an initiative designed to evaluate Alaska's potential for rare-earth elements, PGEs, and other similarly supply-challenged resources. The Styx River project area has active and ongoing mineral exploration for deposit types including porphyry copper/molybdenum/gold, reduced intrusion-related gold, and...
