This dataset captures in digital form the results of previously published U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Water Mission Area studies related to water resource assessment of Cenozoic strata and unconsolidated deposits within the Mississippi Embayment and the Gulf Coastal Plain of the south-central United States. The data are from reports published from the late 1980s to the mid-1990s by the Gulf Coast Regional Aquifer-System Analysis (RASA) studies and in 2008 by the Mississippi Embayment Regional Aquifer Study (MERAS). These studies, and the data presented here, describe the geologic and hydrogeologic units of the Mississippi embayment, Texas coastal uplands, and the coastal lowlands aquifer systems, south-central...
A three-dimensional groundwater flow model (MODFLOW-2005) of the Mississippi embayment, South-Central United States, was developed as part of a national project initiated by the U.S. Geological Survey Groundwater Resources Program to provide updated assessments of groundwater availability in important principal aquifers across the United States. The goals of the national assessment are to document effects of human activities on water levels and groundwater storage, explore climate variability effects on the regional water budget, and evaluate the adequacy of data networks at a regional scale. The Mississippi embayment was chosen because of the substantial dependency on groundwater for agriculture and municipal needs....
The existing three-dimensional groundwater flow model (MODFLOW-2005) of the Mississippi Embayment Regional Aquifer system (MERAS), South-Central United States, was updated with: 1) higher stream density; 2) more spatially refined recharge; 3) better estimates of water use; 4) more recent time period simulated; 5) more realistic storage conceptualization; and 6) more robust handling of dry nodes through use of MODFLOW-NWT. For this study, the MODFLOW-NWT groundwater flow model was used to evaluate four parameter estimation algorithms with lower computational burdens. This work was performed to update the previous version of the MERAS groundwater flow model for decision making in the Mississippi Alluvial Plain (MAP),...
The U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Arkansas Natural Resources Commission, the Arkansas Geological Commission, and the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development has monitored water levels in the Sparta Sand of Claiborne Group and Memphis Sand of Claiborne Group since the 1920's. Ground-water withdrawals have increased while water levels have declined since monitoring was initiated. This report has been produced to describe ground-water levels in the aquifers in the Sparta Sand and Memphis Sand and provide information for the management of this valuable resource. The 2005 potentiometric-surface map of the aquifers in the Sparta Sand and Memphis Sand was constructed using water-level data...

This dataset includes isopach contours showing altitude of freshwater of the Carrizo-Wilcox aquifer, control points used to construct the freshwater isopach contours, isopach contours showing altitude of top of the Carrizo-Wilcox aquifer, wells used to construct cross sections and isopach contours, hydrogeologic cross section H-H' through S-S' lines, isopach contours showing altitude of the base of the Carrizo-Wilcox aquifer, well points used to construct base isopach contours, isopach contours showing thickness of the Carrizo-Wilcox aquifer, and wells used to construct thickness isopach contours. Datasets are shown in figures of the larger body of work "Hydrogeologic framework of the Red River alluvial aquifer...
