This data release includes metadata and tabular data that documents initial water conditions (temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen and salinity) during aquarium trials testing the efficacy of carbon dioxide (CO2) to manage invasive fish in anchialine pools.
These data were compiled to improve our understanding of how water, carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) interact to regulate below ground carbon cycling. Objective(s) of our study were to evaluate how soil heterotrophic carbon cycling responded to inputs of water, C, N, and P individually and interactively on the Colorado Plateau. These data represent soil microbial and CO2 respiration responses to amendments of carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous, and water. Soils were collected at a study site located in Arches National Park in southeastern Utah on 14 August 2017 and again on 17 July 2018 from the upper 10 cm of the soil profile in open spaces among plant canopies after the biological soil crust layer (< 1...
Carbon dioxide (CO2) is under consideration as a chemical fish deterrent at pinch points in rivers (e.g., inside locks) to reduce unwanted fish passage. This study evaluated the behavioral responses of invasive round goby (Neogobius melanostomus) to dissolved CO2 in laboratory tanks. The goal of this project was to quantify CO2 concentrations that modify round goby behavior. More specifically, avoidance behavior (voluntary response) and loss of equilibrium (involuntary response) were quantified across 5, 15, and 25°C water temperatures. These data can be used to inform future field testing of CO2 as an invasive fish deterrent. Spreadsheets include data that were used to evaluate the efficacy of carbon dioxide (CO2)...

Spreadsheet includes data that were used to evaluate the mixing efficiencies of liquid-to-liquid chemical injection manifolds. Specifically, piping designs were developed to deliver fisheries chemicals (e.g. carbon dioxide) into water to control the movements of invasive bigheaded carps. These data describe mixing time, homogeneity and efficacy of carbon dioxide delivery using various piping designs. Results provide recommendations for piping configurations that could be installed within navigational locks to deliver invasive species control chemicals. Control technology for dreissenid mussels (Dreissena polymorpha and D. bugensis) currently relies heavily on chemical molluscicides that can be both costly and ecologically harmful. There is a need to develop more environmentally neutral control tools to manage dreissenid mussels, particularly in cooler water. Previously, carbon dioxide (CO2) showed selective toxicity for Zebra mussels, relative to unionids, when applied in cool water (12 °C). Carp-Carbon Dioxide (carbon dioxide, CO2) is registered as a pesticide by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for deterrence of Asian carp and to control aquatic nuisance species when applied under ice (USEPA 2019). The current registration would allow the use of...
Carbon dioxide has shown promise as a tool to control movements of invasive Asian carps. We evaluated lethal and sublethal responses of juvenile fat mucket (Lampsilis siliquoidea) mussels to carbon dioxide concentrations (43–269 mg/L, mean concentration) that are effective for deterring carp movement. The 28-d LC50 value (lethal concentration to 50% of the mussels) was 87.0 mg/L (95% confidence interval, CI 78.4–95.9) and at 16-d post-exposure was 76.0 mg/L (95% CI 62.9–90.3). A proportional hazards regression model predicted that juveniles could not survive CO2 concentrations >160 mg/L for more than 2 weeks or >100 mg/L CO2 for more than 30 days. Mean daily shell growth was significantly lower for mussels that...

Drilling-density cell maps show the number of wells that have been drilled into the storage assessment unit (SAU). Each 1-square-mile cell has a count for the number of unique well boreholes drilled into the SAU. For a given sedimentary basin, the USGS National Geologic CO2 Sequestration Assessment Project identifies SAUs containing the potential for storage and sequestration of carbon dioxide. Proprietary well header data from IHS ENERDEQ through 2010 were queried to determine which wells were drilled into specific SAUs. The coordinates of wells are proprietary and cannot be released; however, counts of the number of wells per square mile are presented in the well drilling density data layer.
Locks and dams are possible management points to block the spread of invasive Asian carps in the United States. Infusion of carbon dioxide (CO2) into water is one deterrent strategy being considered at navigational structures to reduce upstream fish passage that would not directly interfere with lock and dam operations. The goal of this study was to determine the efficacy of CO2 as a behavioral deterrent to free-swimming fishes. Telemetered bighead carp (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis) and grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) were monitored within a U-shaped pond (30.5 m long x 13.7 m wide x 1 m deep) using a two-dimensional acoustic telemetry array. Gaseous CO2 was administered to one-half of the pond at 30, 75, or...

Dreissenid management has focused primarily on chemical tools which are efficacious, but not without ecological or economic costs. There is a need for additional control tools that are less expensive, readily available, and will not leave a residue after treatment. Carbon dioxide has these advantages over chemical pesticides and has demonstrated effectiveness for control of a range of aquatic invasive species, including dreissenid mussels. Carbon dioxide was lethal to adult zebra mussels at levels that were safe to juvenile unionid mussels and lower levels cause detachment and gaping. Dreissenid veligers are more sensitive than adults to water quality conditions, including pH. Therefore, we hypothesized that effective...
This data release includes metadata and tabular data that documents the survival of fish or invertebrate exposed to carbon dioxide (CO2) gas treatment during aquarium trials. Aquarium trials were conducted with six taxa: guppies (Poecilia reticulata), western mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis), Mozambique tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus), Opae ula shrimp (Halocaridina rubra), feeble shrimp (Palaemon debilis) and a species of thiarid snail (Thiaridae). These results were part of a larger study aimed to test the efficacy of CO2 as a tool for managing invasive fish in anchialine pools.
This data release includes metadata and tabular data that documents changes in pH of anchialine pool water before, during and after diffusion of carbon dioxide (CO2) gas. These results are part of a study testing the efficacy of CO2 as tool for eradicating invasive fish from anchialine pools. The trials were conducted at Puuhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park and Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park, Hawaii, during 2021-2022.
There is growing interest in the use of carbon dioxide (CO2) as a management tool for controlling invasive fishes. However, there is limited published data on susceptibility of many commonly encountered species to elevated CO2 concentrations. Our objective was to estimate the 24-h LC50 and LC95 of four fishes (Rainbow Trout Oncorhynchus mykiss, Common Carp Cyprinus Carpio, Channel Catfish Ictalurus punctatus, and Westslope Cutthroat Trout Oncorhynchus clarkii lewisi). In the laboratory, we exposed fingerlings to a range of levels of CO2 for 24-h in unpressurized, flow-through tanks. A Bayesian hierarchical model was developed to estimate the dose response relationship for each species of fish with associated uncertainty,...

From the US Bureau of Mines map publication, "Availability of Federally Owned Minerals for Exploration and Development in the Western United States". The Bureau of Mines inventoried Federal mineral land in Wyoming and assessed the availability of this land for mineral exploration and development as affected by legal status and agency management practices. To illustrate the impact that various Federal land use decisions have on the mineral industry, the USBM also identified and ranked known mineral deposit areas (KMDAs)-i.e., areas having past or present mineral production and /or known mineral resources- and compared these areas spatially with availability of Federal mineral lands. Most Federal minerals, except...

A discrete sample introduction module (DSIM) was developed and interfaced to a cavity ring-down spectrometer to enable measurements of methane and CO2 concentrations and 13C values with a commercially available cavity ring-down spectrometer (CRDS). The DSIM-CRDS system permits the analysis of limited volume (5 - 100-ml) samples ranging six orders-of-magnitude from 100% analyte to the lower limit of instrument detection (2 ppm). We demonstrate system performance for methane by comparing concentrations and 13C results obtained by the DSIM and traditional methods for a variety of sample types, including low concentration (nanomolar) seawater and high concentration (> 90%) natural gas. The expansive concentration range...
