The GIS shapefile Extra limit counts of southern sea otters 2019 is a point layer representing the locations of sea otter sightings that fall outside the officially recognized range of the southern sea otter (Enhydra lutris nereis) in mainland California. These data were collected during the spring 2019 range-wide census. The USGS range-wide sea otter census has been undertaken each year since 1982, using consistent methodology involving both ground-based and aerial-based counts. The spring census provides the primary basis for gauging population trends by State and Federal management agencies. Sea otter distribution in California (the mainland range) is considered to comprise a band of potential habitat stretching...

Heat can be used a tracer for monitoring seepage rates within stream channels. To estimate seepage using temperature, the diel amplitude and attenuation of temperature at several depths below the streambed must be monitored, as well as the frequency and duration of streamflow in a channel (Narranjo and Smith, 2016). Special subsurface temperature rods (TRODS) were developed to address these most of these needs (Narranjo and Turcotte, 2015). A TROD consists of discrete temperature iButton sensors within a .75 inch (in) diameter 1 meter (m) long sealed, water-proof PVC pipe to prevent water damage to the sensors. A TROD is installed into stream channel sediments and measures surface water and sediment temperatures...

The GIS shapefile Census_sum_2019 provides a standardized tool for examining spatial patterns in abundance and demographic trends of the southern sea otter (Enhydra lutris nereis), based on data collected during the spring 2019 range-wide census. The USGS spring range-wide sea otter census has been undertaken each year since 1982, using consistent methodology involving both ground-based and aerial-based counts. The spring census provides the primary basis for gauging population trends by State and Federal management agencies. This shapefile includes a series of summary statistics derived from the raw census data, including sea otter density (otters per square kilometer of habitat), linear density (otters per kilometer...

Infiltrometers are devices used to measure the infiltration rates of water into soils or porous media (Bouwer, 1986). Cylinder infiltrometers are generally constructed from metal shaped into cylinders which are driven into the ground and flooded with water. The rate at which water infiltrates into the ground is measured until the rate of infiltration is constant to capture unsaturated infiltration rates and beyond steady state to measure saturated infiltration rates and conductivity (Bouwer, 1986). Infiltrometers are typically employed to measure the rate of infiltration on inundated soils such as surface irrigation, seepage from surface water such as streams or reservoirs, or infiltration basins for groundwater...

The GIS shapefile "Range extent of southern sea otters 2017" is a simple polyline representing the geographic distribution of the southern sea otter (Enhydra lutris nereis) in mainland California, based on data collected during the spring 2017 range-wide census. The USGS range-wide sea otter census has been undertaken twice a year since 1982, once in May and once in October, using consistent methodology involving both ground-based and aerial-based counts. The spring census is considered more accurate than the fall count, and provides the primary basis for gauging population trends by State and Federal management agencies. Sea otter distribution in California (the mainland range) is considered to comprise a band...

To determine aquifer properties in the San Antonio Creek Valley watershed (SACVW) single well air and physical slug aquifer tests were conducted on seventeen monitoring wells at nine sites beginning on August 7 2017 and ending on August 13, 2017 . For all tests either a physical or air slug was used based on the distance of the groundwater level from the perforated interval of the well. A physical slug was used if the distance from the groundwater level to the top of the perforated interval was less than seven feet (ft); otherwise an air slug was used. above the screened interval than a physical slug was used. Physical slug tests were used in order to produce enough change in groundwater levels to adequately characterize...

Streambed instruments that measure electrical resistivity were constructed and installed along the main channel in San Antonio Creek and along tributary streambeds in order to provide insight into intermittent streamflow not recorded by traditional stream gaging stations. These instruments can record high-resolution temporal and geographic responses of streamflow to precipitation in intermittent streams. Streambed electrical resistivity sensors (SERS) and stream temperature, intermittency, and conductivity sensors (STICs) are small, cost-effective, instruments that can be installed (and re-installed) along stream reaches to measure stream intermittency. These instruments employ water contact electrodes to record...
