This digital dataset was created as part of a U.S. Geological Survey study, done in cooperation with the Monterey County Water Resource Agency, to conduct a hydrologic resource assessment and develop an integrated numerical hydrologic model of the hydrologic system of Salinas Valley, CA. As part of this larger study, the USGS developed this digital dataset of geologic data and three-dimensional hydrogeologic framework models, referred to here as the Salinas Valley Geological Framework (SVGF), that define the elevation, thickness, extent, and lithology-based texture variations of nine hydrogeologic units in Salinas Valley, CA. The digital dataset includes a geospatial database that contains two main elements as GIS...

To determine aquifer properties in the San Antonio Creek Valley watershed (SACVW) single well air and physical slug aquifer tests were conducted on seventeen monitoring wells at nine sites beginning on August 7 2017 and ending on August 13, 2017 . For all tests either a physical or air slug was used based on the distance of the groundwater level from the perforated interval of the well. A physical slug was used if the distance from the groundwater level to the top of the perforated interval was less than seven feet (ft); otherwise an air slug was used. above the screened interval than a physical slug was used. Physical slug tests were used in order to produce enough change in groundwater levels to adequately characterize...

The GIS shapefile "Census summary of southern sea otter 2017" provides a standardized tool for examining spatial patterns in abundance and demographic trends of the southern sea otter (Enhydra lutris nereis), based on data collected during the spring 2017 range-wide census. The USGS range-wide sea otter census has been undertaken twice a year since 1982, once in May and once in October, using consistent methodology involving both ground-based and aerial-based counts. The spring census is considered more accurate than the fall count, and provides the primary basis for gauging population trends by State and Federal management agencies. This Shape file includes a series of summary statistics derived from the raw census...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) entered into cooperative agreements with the Santa Barbara County Water Agency and Vandenberg Space Force Base to conduct a hydrologic resource assessment and develop an integrated numerical hydrologic model of the San Antonio Creek Valley watershed (SACVW). As part of this study, the USGS developed a digital three-dimensional hydrogeologic framework model (HFM). This dataset contains a geospatial database related to the digital HFM, individual geographic information system (GIS) shapefiles from the geodatabase, and borehole data used to support development of the HFM in a Microsoft Excel workbook (*.xlsx extension). The geospatial database contains the following data elements:...

The San Antonio Creek Valley watershed (SACVW) is located in western Santa Barbara County about 15 miles (mi) south of Santa Maria, California and 55 mi north of Santa Barbara, California. The SACVW, is about 140 square miles and encompasses the San Antonio Creek Valley groundwater basin. Since the late 1800s, groundwater has been the primary source of water for agricultural, military, municipal, and domestic uses. Groundwater withdrawal from pumping has exceeded the amount of water replenishing the basin, causing groundwater declines of more than 150 feet in parts of the valley between 1947 and 2018, and reducing base flow in San Antonio Creek at the western end of the SACVW. Agricultural water use (primarily for...

The GIS shapefile "Extra limit counts of southern sea otters 2017" is a point layer representing the locations of sea otter sightings that fall outside the officially recognized range of the southern sea otter (Enhydra lutris nereis) in mainland California. These data were collected during the spring 2017 range-wide census. Sea otter distribution in California...

The spring 2018 mainland sea otter count began on April 26, and was completed by May 24, 2018. Overall viewing conditions this year were good and rounded off to the same conditions experienced during the 2017 spring census (View Score 2.4, where 0=poor, 1=fair, 2=good, 3=very good, and 4=excellent). The surface canopies of kelp (Macrocystis sp.) were considered by most participants to be above normal for this time of year in most areas of the mainland range, and considerably above what was encountered during the 2017 spring census. Sea otters along the mainland coast were surveyed from Pillar Point in San Mateo County in the north to Rincon Point in the south at the Santa Barbara/Ventura County line. A separate...

The GIS shapefile "Range extent of southern sea otters 2018" is a simple polyline representing the geographic distribution of the southern sea otter (Enhydra lutris nereis) in mainland California, based on data collected during the spring 2018 range-wide census. The USGS range-wide sea otter census has been undertaken each year since 1982, using consistent methodology involving both ground-based and aerial-based counts. The spring provides the primary basis for gauging population trends by State and Federal management agencies. Sea otter distribution in California (the mainland range) is considered to comprise a band of potential habitat stretching along the coast of California, and bounded to the north and south...

Hydrophobic (sediment-associated) pesticides were measured in sediment samples collected from 82 wadeable streams and in biofilm in 54 of those streams in the Central California Foothills and Coastal Mountains ecoregion.115 current-use and 3 legacy pesticides were measured in stream sediment; 93 of the current-use pesticides and the same 3 legacy pesticides were measured in biofilm. On average 4 times as many current-use pesticides were detected in biofilm at a site (median of 2) as in sediment (median of 0.5). This data release provides data for the pesticide concentrations, information on the pesticide compounds, and input data and R scripts for statistical models used in the analysis presented in the journal...

Streambed instruments that measure electrical resistivity were constructed and installed along the main channel in San Antonio Creek and along tributary streambeds in order to provide insight into intermittent streamflow not recorded by traditional stream gaging stations. These instruments can record high-resolution temporal and geographic responses of streamflow to precipitation in intermittent streams. Streambed electrical resistivity sensors (SERS) and stream temperature, intermittency, and conductivity sensors (STICs) are small, cost-effective, instruments that can be installed (and re-installed) along stream reaches to measure stream intermittency. These instruments employ water contact electrodes to record...
