Tracklines and associated observations were mapped and analyzed using ArcMap (ESRI, Redlands, CA). GPS data were recorded in NAD27 map datum and projected to an USGS Albers Equal Area Conic map projection for presentation and subsequent density analyses. Concatenated GPS and observation data were then used to generate point and line coverages in ArcMap (ESRI, Redlands, CA). We designed a custom analytic tool using ArcMap Model Builder that allows for the construction and export of user-specified and effort-adjusted spatial binning of species observations along continuous trackines. For the purposes of this report, we calculated seabird density estimates and marine mammal counts along continuous 3.0-kilometer and...

This data release presents data for 5-m resolution multibeam-bathymetry and acoustic-backscatter data of the northern Channel Islands region, southern California. In 2004 the U.S. Geological Survey, Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center collected multibeam-bathymetry and acoustic-backscatter data in the northern Channel Islands region, southern California. The region was mapped aboard the R/V Ewing using a Kongsberg Simrad EM-1002 multibeam echosounder. These data were previously published on-line at http://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2005/1153/. In this data release the data have been reprocessed to a finer spatial resolution (5-m versus 15-m) using more modern processing techniques. Due to the large file sizes the entire...

Hourly wave-height observations at 32 sites throughout the Channel Islands National Park and San Nicolas Island, site-specific hind casts from the Coastal Data Information Program (CDIP), and contemporary wave height, period, and direction from regional buoys taken during intervals between 2013 and 2017.

California’s Coastal Data Information Program (CDIP) has a hind cast feature that allows one to model hourly height and period at known locations back to 2000. Fitting these hindcasts to observed height and periods indicates that the hindcasts have consistent biases that can be corrected for statistically. Past work generated bias corrections for 32 sites in the Channel Islands. We use these bias corrections to correct hourly height and period hindcasts at these sites from 2000 to 2017. Data columns include: year_utc, month_utc, day_utc, hour_utc, cdip_Hs_m, cdip_Tp_sec, cdip_Dp_degTrue, adjusted_cdip_Hs_m, mean_sensor_pressure_dbar, Transect_depth_m, ubr_Sensor, Tbr_sensor, wave_energy, date, juliand, season, wyr,...

High-resolution multichannel minisparker seismic-reflection data were collected by the U.S. Geological Survey in July of 2018 between Point Conception and Coal Oil Point in the Santa Barbara Channel, California. Data were collected aboard the USGS R/V Parke Snavely during field activity 2018-645-FA, using SIG 2-mille minisparker and recorded using an 8-channel Geometrics digital hydrophone streamer. Sub-bottom acoustic penetration spans several hundreds of meters and is variable by location.

This file contains the flight trackline Global Positioning System (GPS) point data from the aerial surveys. Surveys were flown at 60 meters (200 feet) above sea level at 160 kilometers per hour (90 knots) ground speed. The surveys were flown in a high-winged, twin engine Partenavia PN 68 Observer aircraft following methods developed for seabirds by Briggs et al. (1987). GPS points were recorded every five seconds to allow adequate spatial coverage of the trackline (222 meters is traversed every five seconds at the survey speed of 160 kilometers per hour) and to limit the size of the resulting data files. Data was collected using a laptop computer running the program dLOG (R.G. Ford Consulting, Inc.) that allowed...

We present correction coefficients for hourly wave height and period hind casts for 32 sites throughout the Channel Islands National Park and San Nicolas Island. Each site is described in terms of its location, orientation, and transect depth. To use this table, first generate a site-specific wave height and period hind cast using the California Coastal Data Information Program (CDIP) Monitoring and Prediction (MOP) System (https://cdip.ucsd.edu/documents/index/product_docs/mops/mop_intro.html).

Substrate was classified using the method of Cochrane and Lafferty (2002) for this study. Seafloor character derived from towed sidescan sonar data is available for the mainland coast within the study area from USGS online publications (Cochrane and others, 2003; Cochrane and others, 2005). The number of substrate classes was reduced because rugosity could not be derived for all areas due to the lack of bathymetry data for other data sets used in the study.
