Freshwater salinization is an emerging issue for freshwater environments in the Chesapeake Bay, USA region. Salinization is often described by measurements of specific conductance (SC). This data release contains specific conductance observations collected by multiple regional agencies for streams within the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. This inventory compiles and harmonizes data from the Water Quality Portal (WQP), which is a data repository developed by the National Water Quality Monitoring Council and supported by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Geological Survey, and the U.S. Geological Survey National Water Information System (NWIS). Both discrete measures of SC, which are single measures taken...

Nitrogen, phosphorus, and suspended-sediment loads, and changes in loads, in major rivers across the Chesapeake Bay watershed have been calculated using monitoring data from the Chesapeake Bay River Input Monitoring (RIM) Network stations for the period 1985 through 2022. Nutrient and suspended-sediment loads and changes in loads were determined by applying a weighted regression approach called WRTDS (Weighted Regression on Time, Discharge, and Season). The load results represent the total mass of nitrogen, phosphorus, and suspended sediment that was exported from each of the RIM watersheds.

These tabular data are summaries of land use/land cover related variables within catchments of the Chesapeake Bay watershed using the Xstrm methodology at 1:24,000 scale. Variables being counted as land use/land cover related contain all land use and land cover data including datasets that are split off or combined from those data (eg. agriculture or impervious classes only datasets). Outputs consist of tabular comma-separated values files (CSVs) for both the local catchment and network summaries linked to the National Hydrography Dataset Plus High-Resolution (NHDPlus HR) framework by NHDPlus ID. Local catchments are defined as the single catchment the data is summarized within. Network accumulation summaries were...
These tabular data are summaries of climate related variables within catchments of the Chesapeake Bay watershed using the Xstrm methodology at 1:24,000 scale. Variables being counted as climate related include temperature and precipitation by both annual and monthly values. Outputs consist of tabular comma-separated values files (CSVs) for the local catchment and network summaries linked to the National Hydrography Dataset Plus High-Resolution (NHDPlus HR) framework by NHDPlus ID. Local catchments are defined as the single catchment the data is summarized within. Network accumulation summaries were completed for each of the local catchments and their network-connected upstream catchments. The summarized data tables...

This data includes point and polygon layers that are a compilation of study sites, watersheds, and areas of interest associated with the USGS Chesapeake Bay Theme 1 (factors affecting stream health, fish habitat, and aquatic conditions) and Theme 2 (coastal Habitats and Implications for Waterbirds) activities. Locations in this dataset were compiled from various USGS Chesapeake Bay activities and with input from USGS scientists to indicate study areas under multiple projects associated with USGS Chesapeake Bay Science Theme 1 and Theme 2 activities. Data and areas provided here represent current and historical sites as of June 2020 to highlight activity locations and areas of interest throughout the Chesapeake...

These tabular data are summaries of human related landscape variables within catchments of the Chesapeake Bay watershed using the Xstrm methodology at 1:24,000 scale. Variables being counted as human related include agriculture, barriers, road density and road/stream crossing data. Outputs consist of tabular comma-separated values files (CSVs) for both local catchment and network summaries linked to the National Hydrography Dataset Plus High-Resolution (NHDPlus HR) framework by NHDPlus ID. Local catchments are defined as the single catchment the data is summarized within. Network accumulation summaries were completed for each of the local catchments and their network connected upstream and/or downstream catchments....
Geomorphometry for Streams and Floodplains in the Chesapeake and Delaware Watersheds was generated as part of the project Quantifying Floodplain Ecological Processes and Ecosystem Services in the Delaware River Watershed funded through the William Penn Foundation's Delaware Watershed Research fund. This dataset contains geomorphometry for streams and floodplains in the Chesapeake and Delaware River watersheds. Geomorphometry is a quantitative representation of landscape surface form (e.g., channel width and depth) obtained from digital elevation models (DEMs). The dataset contains geomorphometry derived from running 3-m DEMs through the Floodplain and Channel Evaluation Tool (FACET) version 0.1.0. FACET generates...
Treated effluent from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) contains contaminants not fully removed during the treatment process and that may pose environmental health risks when discharged to surface waters. This data release presents inputs for and results from a wastewater reuse model that used data compiled from several sources to calculate the following estimates for each non-tidal, non-coastline, initialized National Hydrography Dataset Version 2.1 (NHDPlus V2) stream segment in the Potomac River watershed: (1) accumulated wastewater as a percent of total streamflow (ACCWW%); and (2) predicted environmental concentrations (PECs, in micrograms per liter) of 69 municipal effluent-derived contaminants. ACCWW% values...

These data were released prior to the October 1, 2016 effective date for the USGS’s policy dictating the review, approval, and release of scientific data as referenced in USGS Survey Manual Chapter 502.8 Fundamental Science Practices: Review and Approval of Scientific Data for Release. This is an ArcGIS dataset depicting watershed segments in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed and adjacent states of New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia, Delaware, Virginia, North Carolina, and Tennessee. Thirty-meter-resolution Digital Elevation Model data were used to delineate watersheds for each stream reach. State watershed boundaries replaced the Digital Elevation Model-derived watersheds where coincident. The data are...
This data release collates stream water temperature observations across the Chesapeake Bay watershed from the USGS National Water Information System (NWIS), Water Quality Portal (WQP) and the USGS Aquarius (AQ) Time-Series database. Data retrieved from NWIS consists of aggregate (minimum, maximum and mean) daily values and continuous data from USGS monitoring stations. Values from the WQP contain discrete data from multiple agencies. The dataset compiled from AQ includes miscellaneous stream temperature observations collected during discharge measurements. This stream temperature data release was completed to support the USGS goal to make scientific data publicly usable, easily discoverable, and widely available....

Nutrient and suspended-sediment loads and changes in loads were determined by applying a weighted regression approach called WRTDS (Weighted Regression on Time, Discharge, and Season). Yield results are obtained by dividing the annual load (pounds) of a given constituent by the respective...

This data release contains summary metrics describing stream stage, stream water temperature, and short-term climate conditions (daily precipitation and air temperature) for 30 streams spanning gradients of forest and pasture land uses and agricultural best management practice implementation in the Shenandoah Valley region of Virginia and West Virginia, USA. This setting is the first of four settings or "typologies" that will be assessed for the USGS Chesapeake Stream Team project. High-frequency stage and water temperature (5-minute data), and air temperature (30-minute data) were measured by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) from May 2021 to December 2021 and are available on the USGS National Water Information...

This data release presents calculated accumulated wastewater (ACCWW, as a percent of total streamflow) values for 43 National Hydrologic Dataset Version 2.1 (NHDPlus V2.1) stream segments coinciding with long-term smallmouth bass sampling locations (Table 1) in the Shenandoah River Watershed (encompassing parts of Virginia and West Virginia, USA). Values are calculated for quarter-year (Quarter 1 [Q1], January - March; Quarter 2 [Q2], April - June; Quarter 3 [Q3], July-September; Quarter 4 [Q4], October-December) time scales (Table 2) and annual time scales (Table 3) for years 2000 to 2018. Estimates at a stream segment represent the combined total upstream wastewater discharges as well as direct discharges into...
