These data were collected as part of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) project template 678-1 entitled "Evaluate immediate and long-term BMP effectiveness of GLRI restoration efforts at urban beaches on Southern and Western Lake Michigan". This project is evaluating the effectiveness of projects that are closely associated with restoration of local habitat and contact recreational activities at two GLRI funded sites in Southern Lake Michigan and one non-GLRI site in Western Lake Michigan. Evaluation of GLRI projects will assess whether goals of recipients are on track and identify any developing unforeseen consequences. Including a third, non-GLRI project site in the evaluation allows comparison between...

This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Data Release provides discrete water-quality data collected from four sites on the Kansas River and four of its tributaries during July 2012 through September 2016. The water-quality constituents included in this data release are the cyanotoxins microcystin and cylindrospermopsin, the taste-and-odor compounds geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol, major ions, alkalinity, nutrients, suspended sediment, indicator bacteria, and actinomycetes bacteria.

This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Data Release provides data collected from sediment oxygen demand (SOD) deployments conducted at eight stream sites in eastern Kansas during August 2014 through December 2015. Continuous water-quality monitors were used to measure water temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, specific conductance, turbidity, and total algae (chlorophyll-a and phycocyanin) at thirty second intervals. All data are reported as raw measured values and are not rounded to USGS significant figures. The dataset includes all water-quality data collected during sediment oxygen demand deployments.

This study describes the toxic effects of different prominent aquatic pollutants?heavy metals (Cd & Pb), pesticides (alphamethrin and deltamethrin) and salt (NaCl)?on the intracellular proline content in the cyanobacterium, Westiellopsis prolifica?Janet strain?NCCU331. Despite a reduction in growth (measured as chlorophyll a content), the intracellular proline content increased in the presence of heavy metals, pesticides and high salt concentration. The intracellular cyanobacterial proline accumulation was more pronounced under salt stress than in the presence of pesticides and heavy metals. We have also compared whether or not anionic components influence heavy metal toxicity. It was found that the chlorides of...

This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Data Release provides continuously-measured water-quality data collected from two sites on Milford Lake, Kansas, during May 25-26, June 8-10, July 20-21, and September 14-15, 2016. All data are reported as raw measured values and are not rounded to USGS significant figures. Water-quality monitors were used to measure water temperature, specific conductance, turbidity, pH, chlorophyll, phycocyanin, dissolved oxygen, and fluorescent dissolved organic matter (fDOM) at fifteen-minute intervals. This dataset includes all continuously measured data collected at two short-term, fixed-site locations as part of a study to evaluate the spatial variability of harmful algal blooms in Milford...
The effects of elevated metals on stream periphyton in the Eagle River, a mining impacted river in central Colorado, were assessed in 1991 and 1992 using assemblage information (taxa richness, community similarity) and non-taxonomic measures (biomass, chlorophyll a, autotrophic index). The number of periphyton genera collected ranged from 2 at a site adjacent to abandoned mining operations to 21 at a downstream site, but was not significantly correlated with dissolved metals concentrations. Fragilaria and Achnanthes were the dominant genera at all sites, with Fragilaria dominating the less impacted sites and Achnanthes dominating at the more impacted sites. Taxonomic similarity was greatest among those sites receiving...
Abstract (from http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/fwb.12569/abstract): Lakes Michigan and Huron, which are undergoing oligotrophication after reduction of phosphorus loading, invasion by dreissenid mussels and variation in climate, provide an opportunity to conduct large-scale evaluation of the relative importance of these changes for lake productivity. We used remote sensing, field data and an information-theoretic approach to identify factors that showed statistical relationships with observed changes in chlorophyll a (chla) and primary production (PP). Spring phosphorus (TP), annual mean chla and PP have all declined significantly in both lakes since the late 1990s. Additionally, monthly mean...
