Landforms along the Pacific, Gulf of Mexico, and Atlantic coastlines for the conterminous United States are attributed with the relative vulnerability of horizontal erosion due to sea-level rise to characterize coastal zone stability. The position and extent of landforms are geospatially indexed as line-events where these coastal zone features are intersected by the linear-referenced 2013 - 2014 U.S. Geological Survey National Hydrography Dataset Coastline, which corresponds to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) 2013 - 2014 mean high water level datum delineated in intertidal zones open to oceans, behind barrier coasts in bays, lagoons, and estuaries, and sometimes where tidal currents reach...

A polygon dataset representing the nearshore environmental zone within the Lake Erie Basin. The zone is defined by water depth of more than 3 meters and less than 15 meters, queried from the NOAA National Geophysical Data Center bathymetry data. This data was developed in conjuction with the Lake Erie Millinium Network (www.lemn.org) .
Valley Segment Ecological Classification (VSEC). An ecological river classification involves the identification of structurally homogeneous spatial units which emerge along the channel network as a result of catchement processes interacting with local physiographic features. Observations of Michigan rivers suggest that the natural ecological unit, as defined by the spatial scales of riverine physical and biological porcesses, is most closely approximated by the physical channel unti termed the valley segment. Valley segments are generally quite large, characterized by relative homogeneity in hydrologic, limnologic, channel morphology, and riparian dynamics. Valley segment characteristics often change sharply at...
The GIS layer "Range_extent_15" is a simple polyline representing the geographic distribution of the southern sea otter (Enhydra lutris nereis) in mainland California, based on data collected during the spring 2015 range-wide census. The USGS range-wide sea otter census has been undertaken twice a year since 1982, once in May and once in October, using consistent methodology involving both ground-based and aerial-based counts. The spring census is considered more accurate than the fall count, and provides the primary basis for gauging population trends by State and Federal management agencies. Sea otter distribution in California (the mainland range) is considered to comprise a band of potential habitat stretching...

The GIS shapefile "Census summary of southern sea otter 2017" provides a standardized tool for examining spatial patterns in abundance and demographic trends of the southern sea otter (Enhydra lutris nereis), based on data collected during the spring 2017 range-wide census. This Shape file includes a series of summary statistics derived from the raw census...

The GIS shapefile "Extra limit observations 2016" is a point layer representing the locations of sea otter sightings that fall outside the officially recognized range of the southern sea otter (Enhydra lutris nereis) in mainland California. These data were collected during the spring 2016 range-wide census. Geophysical and geological survey data were collected off Town Neck Beach in Sandwich, Massachusetts, in May and July 2016. Approximately 130 linear kilometers of subbottom (seismic-reflection) and 234-kilohertz interferometric sonar (bathymetric and backscatter) data were collected along with sediment samples, sea floor photographs, and (or) video at 26 sites within the geophysical survey area. Sediment grab samples were collected at 19 of the 26 sampling sites and video and (or) photographic imagery of the sea floor were taken at all 26 sites. These survey data are used to characterize the sea floor by identifying sediment-texture, seabed morphology, and underlying geologic structure and stratigraphy. Data collected...

This dataset represents a combined file indicating where a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) was and was not used in the tidal marsh classifications "Tidal Marsh Vegetation Classification, DEM, 3m, Northeast U.S." and "Tidal Marsh Vegetation Classification, no DEM, 3m, Northeast U.S.". For more information about the development of the data please contact Mo Correll at Maureen.correll@maine.edu. "Tidal Marsh Vegetation Classification, DEM, 3m, Northeast U.S.", "Tidal Marsh Vegetation Classification, no DEM, 3m, Northeast U.S.", and "DEM Difference in Tidal Marsh Vegetation Classification, 3m, Northeast U.S." are products of the Saltmarsh Habitat and Avian Research Program (www.tidalmarshbirds.org).

This service shows the Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI) developed for Northern California in 2008. Both linear and polygonal shoreline features are included here. Associated GIS datasets can be downloaded here.ESI maps use shoreline rankings to rate how sensitive an area of shoreline would be to an oil spill. The ranking scale goes from 1 to 10.A rank of 1 represents shorelines with the least susceptibility to damage by oiling. Examples include steep, exposed rocky cliffs and banks. The oil cannot penetrate into the rock and will be washed off quickly by the waves and tides.A rank of 10 represents shorelines most likely to be damaged by oiling. Examples include protected, vegetated wetlands, such as mangrove...
