The U.S. Geological Survey collected low-altitude airborne visual imagery via a multirotor, small unoccupied aircraft system (sUAS) along with Real Time Kinematic (RTK) GPS survey data at Childs along the Verde River in Arizona in December 2017. Visual imagery was collected in jpg format and Structure from Motion techniques were applied to the visual imagery to derive a time-specific high-resolution orthomosaic for the study site.

Scientists and engineers from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Earth Resources Observation and Science Center (EROS) Cal/Val Center of Excellence (ECCOE) collected in situ measurements using field spectrometers to support the validation of surface reflectance products derived from Earth observing remote sensing imagery. Data provided in this data release were collected during selected Earth observing satellite overpasses and tests during the months of May through November 2021. These data were collected at six field sites during 2021. These field sites included South Dakota State University (SDSU) Research Park in Brookings, SD, near the Brookings Airport in Brookings, SD, a private land holding in Sanborn County,...

The U.S. Forest Service plans to conduct forest restoration treatments through the Four Forest Restoration Initiative (4FRI) on hundreds of thousands of acres of ponderosa pine forest along the Mogollon Rim of Arizona over the next 20 years with the goals of reducing wildfire hazard and improving forest health. The 4FRI’s key objective is to thin and burn the forests to create within-stand openings that “promote snowpack accumulation and retention which benefit groundwater recharge and watershed processes at the fine (1 to 10 acres) scale.” However, little is known about how these openings created by restoration treatments affect snow water equivalence (SWE) and soil moisture, which are key parts of the water balance...

The U.S. Geological Survey collected low-altitude airborne visual imagery via a multirotor, small unoccupied aircraft system (sUAS) along with Real Time Kinematic (RTK) GPS survey data at Sheep Bridge along the Verde River in Arizona in December 2017. Visual imagery was collected in jpg format and Structure from Motion techniques were applied to the visual imagery to derive a time-specific high-resolution orthomosaic for the study site.

Northern Arizona University will build upon the U.S. Forest Service Four Forest Restoration Initiative in Northern Arizona to investigate how restoration efforts can affect the water volume available in the snowpack and soil moisture in the Desert LCC. This project will result in a tool that can be used to predict the water volume in snowpack and soil moisture response to various forest treatments.

These data were compiled for research pertaining to the effects of stand density treatments on growth rates in semi-arid, ponderosa pine forests. Also, these data examined how the planned restoration treatments in the Four Forests Restoration Initiative (4FRI), the largest forest restoration project being implemented in the United States, would alter landscape-scale patterns of forest growth and drought vulnerability throughout the 21st century. Using drought-growth relationships developed within the landscape, we considered a suite of climate and thinning scenarios and estimated both average forest growth and the proportion of years with extremely low growth as a measure of vulnerability to long-term decline. The...

The U.S. Geological Survey collected low-altitude airborne visual imagery via a multirotor, small unoccupied aircraft system (sUAS) along with Real Time Kinematic (RTK) GPS survey data at three study sites (Beasley Flat, Childs, and Sheep Bridge) along the Verde River in Arizona in December 2017. Visual imagery was collected in jpg format and Structure from Motion techniques were applied to the visual imagery to derive a time-specific high-resolution orthomosaic for each of the three study sites.
