This data release contains calculated metrics which summarize various biodiversity and functional/life history trait information about fish communities sampled across the Chesapeake Bay Watershed as well as ancillary data related to time/place of sampling and sampling methodology. The fish sampling data used to compute these metrics were compiled from various fish sampling programs conducted by state and federal agencies, county governments, universities, and river basin commissions across the watershed. Prior to computation of community metrics data from individual fish sampling programs were investigated for completeness and data entry errors. Subsequently, desired fields were extracted from each individual dataset...

Benthic and Drift invertebrate samples were processed by two parties. Some of the samples were subsampled according to a standardized protocol in order to be processed more efficiently. This dataset includes the information that is necessary for "scaling up" the invertebrate data to concentration in square meters (benthic) or cubic meters (drift).
Data set is a combined collection of post-fire species point intercept cover monitoring data across the Murphy 2007 fire, Rush 2012 fire, Holloway 2012 fire, and Soda 2015 fire. Data was collected between 2008 and 2022 by the Bureau of Land Management, US Geological Survey, and Idaho Fish and Wildfire for various purposes. The species data was leveraged to assess post-fire community structure and trajectories.
This package contains information collected during avian and habitat survey data at five national parks/monuments: Cape Krusenstern National Monument, Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve, Kobuk Valley National Park, Noatak National Preserve, and Bering Land Bridge National Preserve. The objectives of the surveys were to document the occurrence of 90 percent of the bird species likely to occur in montane habitats and determine the distribution and abundance of species of special concern.
In June 2017, Lake Sturgeon were observed spawning in Fall Creek, a tributary to Cayuga Lake, NY. The spawning site was just downstream of Ithaca Falls, the first impassible barrier. Data were collected to quantify the stream habitat use by the Lake Sturgeon. These were the first sturgeon observed spawning in a Cayuga Lake tributary recorded in the New York Department of Environmental Conservation historical fish records. Habitat and egg deposition data were collected at 10 stations on 15 cross stream transects, spaced at least 10 m apart. Eggs were collected with using 7 cm diameter core sampler at least 3 stations on each transect. Water depth, stream velocity, and substrate composition data were collected at...

This dataset includes information about valley segment and catchment summaries, valley characteristics, instream habitat, and fish for valley segments, sites, and transects along four river mainstems in Ontario, Canada. Moving west to east, the rivers include the Grand River which ends in Lake Erie at Port Maitland, the Ganaraska River which ends in Lake Ontario at Port Hope, the Trent River which ends in the Bay of Quinte at Trenton, and the Petawawa River which ends in the Ottawa River at Petawawa. These rivers vary in natural character, anthropogenic development, and fish assemblages. Riverine sites along the mainstems of all four rivers included a total of one hundred and twelve sites. Sampling on the Grand,...
This data represents a vegetation map for Gauley River National Recreation Area. It contains nonoverlapping polygons which represent vegetation classes, aquatic features, and cultural features. Vegetation types were classified based on statistical analysis of plot data collected on the ground from 1995 through 2009. Polygons were delineated based on interpretation of digital and hard copy aerial photography flown in 2003. This data set was created by clipping the GARIvegetation feature class by the boundary of Gauley River National Recreation Area. Multipart polygons created by the clip operation were converted to single part polygons. Hectares and acres were calculated for each polygon using XTools.
From 16 June to 30 July, 2021, a Virginia Tech team of 4-6 sampled the fish community in 30 Shenandoah Valley streams (Virginia and West Virginia, USA) as part of a larger stream-health study including other teams who surveyed geomorphology, water quality, flow, temperature, macroinvertebrates, and fish health at the same 30 streams. The fish community team also sampled three additional bonus streams (SiteID's FOLL, NAKE, and TUMB) during 19-22 August, 2021. These 33 streams had upstream drainage areas of 7 to 46 sq. km and included 4 James River tributaries (SiteID's POAG, MLRB, CEDR, PISG), one Potomac River tributary (HARL), and 28 Shenandoah River tributaries. At each stream, we sampled fish from two reaches...

This data release provides seven datasets of soil and vegetation data from lake margin soils from throughout the Yukon Flats National Wildlife Refuge. Data includes multiple lakes that are defined as either stable or drying. Lake margin vegetation communities include graminoid, shrub, and forest. Sols are separated into organic and mineral layers. Microbial data includes different phospholipid fatty acids and soil enzyme activity data for multiple enzymes involved in C,N, and P cycling. Data also includes information on respiration rate constants (k) and labile substrate pool (Ao) from soil incubations. Other soil chemical attributes such as soil pH, electrical conductivity, percent C and percent N are also included.
These data are part of the Gulf Watch Alaska (GWA) long-term monitoring program, nearshore monitoring component. The dataset is comprised of six comma separated values (.csv) file exported from a relational database. The data consist of: 1) transect summary, 2) nest details, 3) egg float and stage data, 4) chicks diets, 5) chick diet taxonomy, and 6) Gulf Watch Alaska contributors.
Note: this data release is currently being revised and is temporarily unavailable. Invertebrate, fish, and habitat data were collected as part of a cooperative project that began in 2002 between the U.S. Geological Survey, Colorado Springs Utilities, and Colorado Springs Engineering. Other entities have contributed to the project over the years including Colorado Parks and Wildlife. Data were primarily collected from up to 35 sites – 33 sites within the Fountain Creek Basin but also from two sites on the Arkansas River. The number of sites sampled each year as well as the number of annual visits during which data were collected, and sampling methods used during each visit vary. This data release includes data collected...

In 1991, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) began a study of more than 50 major river basins across the Nation as part of the National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) project of the National Water Quality Program. One of the major goals of the NAWQA project is to determine how water quality and ecological conditions change over time. To support that goal, long-term consistent and comparable ecological monitoring has been conducted on streams and rivers throughout the Nation. Fish, invertebrate, and algae data collected as part of the NAWQA program were retrieved from the USGS Aquatic Bioassessment database for use in trend analysis. Ultimately, these data will provide insight into how natural features and human...
These data represent a vegetation map for Vicksburg National Military Park and Vicksburg National Cemetery. The data consist of nonoverlapping polygons which represent National Vegetation Classification vegetation types, and non-vegetated land cover features. Vegetation types were classified based on analysis of plot data and supplemental observations collected on the ground from 2004 through 2010. Polygons were delineated based on interpretation of digital aerial photography flown in 2004 and terrian modeling. More detailed methodology is documented in Lea, Waltermire, and Nordman (2013).
In this study, the U.S. Geological Survey investigated the use of insects as bioindicators of climate change in sagebrush steppe shrublands and grasslands in the Upper Columbia Basin. The research was conducted in the Stinkingwater and Pueblo mountain ranges in eastern Oregon on lands administered by the Bureau of Land Management. We used a “space-for-time” sampling design that related insect communities to climate and weather along elevation gradients. We analyzed our insect dataset at three levels of organization: (1) whole-community, (2) feeding guilds (detritivores, herbivores, nectarivores, parasites, and predators) and (3) orders within nectarivores (i.e., pollinators). This dataset contains information about...

Greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) has been identified as a potential umbrella species with the assumption that conservation of their habitats in sagebrush ecosystems may benefit multiple other wildlife species, but co-occurrence with an umbrella species does not necessarily guarantee species will respond positively to management for sage-grouse. This may be particularly true for ecotones, such as at the eastern edge of the sage-grouse range where sagebrush steppe and Great Plains grasslands intersect. We used a novel application of neutral landscape models (Etherington et al., 2015) to evaluate observed and expected overlap between greater sage-grouse habitat (1994-2010; Fedy et al., 2014) and distribution...
Data includes functional group cover of exotic annual grasses, deep rooted perennial grasses, and shallow rooted perennial grasses within the first five years after the 2015 Soda Wildfire across different post-fire restoration treatments. Additional landscape and weather covariates hypothesized to influence treatment effectiveness are included.
From 20 May - 8 June 2021, a Virginia Tech team of 2-3 sampled the macroinvertebrate community in 30 Shenandoah Valley streams (Virginia and West Virginia, USA) as part of a larger stream-health study including other teams who surveyed geomorphology, water quality, flow, temperature, fish community, and fish health at the same 30 streams. The macroinvertebrate community team also characterized the habitat units sampled for macroinvertebrates. At each stream, we sampled macroinvertebrates in two ways:1) in each stream we took 5 slack samples in riffles according to NAWQA protocol, and 2) we selected the most available and productive habitat where we used the Slack sampler to collect 5 additional samples in wood debris...
