We capitalized on a regional-scale, anthropogenic experiment?the reduction of black-tailed prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus) towns across the Great Plains of North America?to test the hypothesis that decline of this species has led to declines in diversity of native grassland vertebrates of this region. We compared species richness and species composition of non-volant mammals, reptiles and amphibians at 36 prairie dog towns and 36 paired sites in the Panhandle Region of Oklahoma during the summers and falls of 1997, 1998 and 1999. Every production practice, including conservation tillage, has positive or negative environmental consequences that may involve air, land, water, and/or the health and ecological status of wildlife. The negative impacts associated with agricultural production, and the use of conventional tillage systems in particular, include soil erosion, energy use, leaching and runoff of agricultural chemicals, and carbon emissions. Several of these impacts are quantified. Our demands on natural systems outweigh the capacity of those systems to support us. This paper calls for an approach to development that consistently delivers ‘net benefit’ for biodiversity or ‘ecological enhancement’. GAP distribution models represent the areas where species are predicted to occur based on habitat associations. GAP distribution models are the spatial arrangement of environments suitable for occupation by a species. In other words, a species distribution is created using a deductive model to predict areas suitable for occupation within a species range. Aspect is the compass direction toward which a slope faces, measured in degrees from North in a clockwise direction from 0 to 360. Aspect was generated using ArcGIS Spatial Analyst, with the USGS National Elevation Dataset as input. For quality information regarding the National Elevation Dataset, see http://nationalmap.gov/elevation.html. These data cover the entire continental U.S. and are a continuous data layer. These raster data have a 30 m x 30 m cell resolution. This aspect data set is considered official foundational data for the GAP species modeling process. The Species Richness Maps included here are based on the Gap Analysis Project (GAP) habitat maps, which are predictions of the spatial distribution of suitable environmental and land cover conditions within the United States for individual species. Individual species habitat distribution models were summed to create the total richness for each vertebrate taxa. Freshwater mussels (Unionidae) are among the most imperiled groups of organisms in the world. We provide genetic and distribution data for the Louisiana Pigtoe, Pleurobema riddellii, to guide decisions related to federal protection for the species under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. Our final dataset includes 125 COI sequences generated as part of our study representing P. riddellii from eight North American river basins.
