Background information.—Historically, the Powell River supported abundant and diverse populations of freshwater mussels. In recent decades, mussel density and species richness have declined and many freshwater mussel species are listed as either State or Federally threatened or endangered species. Environmental degradation from coal mining has been identified as one of the drivers of this decline. An example is the 1996 Lone Mountain slurry spill that directly affected mussel populations, as well as their host fish species. Freshwater mussels feed by filtering small particles from water, thereby improving water quality and providing an essential ecosystem service in rivers and streams. Mussels also serve as a food...

Carney Ranch Company (formerly Carney Land Company and Carney Ranch) have expressed clear interest in protecting their properties and holdings in the Upper Green River Valley from development through the sale of conservation easements on 3,765 acres. An additional 1,200 acres of land owned by Carney Land Company are already under conservation easements held by the Green River Valley Land Trust. The overall, primary objective is to protect and preserve the outstanding wildlife and open space values that currently exist in this portion of the Upper Green River Valley in perpetuity.

Montana's landscape is a complex, constantly changing patchwork of federal, state, private and tribal ownership. Within these ownerships are many kinds of designations, including wilderness, parks, wildlife areas, recreation areas, and conservation easements. Because information on land stewardship is critical to effective land management, the Montana Natural Heritage Program began integrating ownership and management data into a land stewardship mapping data system in 1997. The goal of the Montana Land Stewardship Mapping Project is to manage a single, statewide digital data set that incorporates information from both public and private entities. The project assembles information on land ownership and management,...

The project consists of three distinct conservation projects: 1) the Sommers/Todd Place project, 2) the Scott Place project, and 3) the Duke Place project. All three projects combined encompass approximately 19,000 deeded acres located at two critical locations along the Green River in northern Sublette County and at an important corridor and buffer area between the Bridger-Teton National Forest and the Green River. Sommers/Todd Place: This portion of the porject encompasses over 5,100 deeded acres along the Green River. The ranches are contiguous and are located on both sides of the Green River. It is located along the west flank of the Pinedale Anticline natural gas field. The project includes a conservation...

This data layer depicts approved acquisition boundaries for the National Wildlife Refuge System, as administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) in the Pacific Southwest Region. The primary source for this information is the USFWS Realty program.
The National Conservation Easement Database (NCED) is a collaborative venture to compile easement records (both spatial and tabular) from land trusts and public agencies throughout the United States in a single, up-to-date, sustainable, GIS compatible, online source. The goal of the NCED is to provide a comprehensive picture of the privately owned conservation easement lands, recognizing their contribution to America's natural heritage, a vibrant economy, and healthy communities. Conservation easements are legal agreements voluntarily entered into between landowners and conservation entities (agencies or land trusts) for the express purpose of protecting certain societal values such as open space or vital wildlife...

Prioritization for protection of habitat (via acquisition or easements), based on local scale ecological integrity, degree of threats faced, potential conservation opportunities, and conservation value of surrounding landscape. In contrast to ecological integrity ratings; threat, opportunity and landscape rankings are largely based on the range of values of any given indicator across the geography, sorted by quantile. There are some exceptions, particularly for indicators used to develop threat rankings (e.g., urban development risk). EEMS is a tree-based, fuzzy logic modeling system, where output values range from -1 to +1, indicating whether a given output is entirely FALSE or TRUE, respectively. Indicators with...

The National Conservation Easement Database (NCED), clipped to the boundary of the Southern Rockies LCC. Some of the private easement data in the NCED is not listed in the USGS Protected Area Database (PAD-US), so the two data sets can be used in combination. The entire dataset is available for download from the NCED website. The website's data can also be queried and viewed through an online map viewer. From metadata: the National Conservation Easement Database (NCED) is a collaborative venture to compile easement records (both spatial and tabular) from land trusts and public agencies throughout the United States in a single, up-to-date, sustainable, GIS compatible, online source.
