Systematic conservation planning is well suited to address the many large-scale biodiversity conservation challenges facing the Appalachian region. However, broad, well-connected landscapes will be required to sustain many of the natural resources important to this area into the future. If these landscapes are to be resilient to impending change, it will likely require an orchestrated and collaborative effort reaching across jurisdictional and political boundaries. The first step in realizing this vision is prioritizing discrete places and actions that hold the greatest promise for the protection of biodiversity. Five conservation design elements covering many critical ecological processes and patterns across the...
This project will conduct a vulnerability assessment, develop climate-smart adaptation strategies and actions, and generate implementation plans for focal habitats of the South and Central Coast regions of the CALCC, with a specific focus on four Southern California National Forests (Angeles, San Bernardino, Cleveland, Los Padres).Specific project goals include:(1) Assess the regional vulnerabilities and resiliencies of focal habitats to climate change and non-climate change stressors.(2) Generate climate-informed maps to identify how vulnerabilities vary spatially to help prioritize conservation areas and activities.(3) Identify implementable climate-smart conservation strategies and actions to conserve priority...

All Conservation Design Elements identified through a multi-year conservation planning effort undertaken by the Appalachian Landscape Conservation Cooperative (LCC). These elements were identified by the program Marxan as meeting collective conservation targets. Datasets include a merged design of all five elements, individual element shapefiles, and a prioritization shapefile (Conservation Design elements outlined by the NatureScape Design that were then placed into a prioritization framework based on Margulis and Pressy 2000).

Executive SummaryIn 2015 the Desert Landscape Conservation Cooperative (Desert LCC) made significant progress toward developing a climate smart Landscape Conservation Design for their geography. They developed a methodology for engaging interested partners in conservation planning, hosted two Landscape Conservation Design workshops (one in the U.S. and one in Mexico), developed an understanding of the highest impact pressures and stressors affecting focal ecosystems (springs, including aquatic and riparian resources, streams, including aquatic and riparian resources, and grasslands and shrublands), conducted outreach across the Desert LCC geography to familiarize partners with the Landscape Conservation Design approach...

Purpose of the PA-CAT:To provide information and guidance in support of establishment and management of comprehensive protected areas systems in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.Role/Tasks:Short-term• Build an open-access national protected areas database consistent with the IUCN classification system applied to Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands and determine what lands and marine extents are currently under protection and by what mechanisms.• Develop a conservation strategy that standardizes the language used for discussing protected areas in Puerto Rico, details the existing and potential mechanisms and tactics for protection (i.e., acquisition, easements, land use, donation) based on the database,...
Project Vision and BackgroundThe Caribbean Landscape Conservation Cooperative (CLCC) is developing shared conservation priorities to guide their individual and collective conservation actions. The long term goal is a shared vision of land and seascapes of the future where cultural and natural resources most important to the greatest number of people are sustained and strengthened. Our approach to reach that shared vision is through the collective development and implementation of landscape conservation design (LCD; Campellone et al. 2014 ) The CLCC will use a multi-stakeholder structured decision-making (SDM) process to determine values associated with specific resources – or fundamental objectives, and associated...

The mission of the Caribbean Landscape Conservation Cooperative is to provide science and technology for conservation planning and action leading to a mutually desired landscape of the future (Nassauer and Opdam 2008, USFWS 2012). An essential component of developing a shared vision is a common understanding of the current land and seascape characteristics. This includes the distribution of Trust resources, the condition of Trust resource populations and their habitats, the governance structure impacting them, assessments of threats and vulnerabilities – tied to information on land uses, climate, ecosystem characteristics (e.g., stream flow), and potential future scenarios (Strategy 2012). This is a potentially...

The sustainability of natural and cultural resources and landscapes are important to quality of life and local economies. Landscape Conservation Cooperatives (LCCs) address large scale natural resource challenges that transcend political and jurisdictional boundaries and require a networked approach to conservation— holistic, collaborative, and grounded in science – to ensure the sustainability of America’s land, water, wildlife and cultural resources. The Upper Midwest and Great Lakes LCC, established in 2010, is focused on a diverse range of fish, wildlife and other natural resources that transcend existing state and international borders including the Great Lakes, North America’s largest freshwater resource,...

Across the Tennessee River Basin is a collaboration within the Appalachian LCC bringing together multiple agencies and stakeholders in a joint effort to plan and deliver landscape conservation actions to protect one of the most diverse areas for aquatic species in North America. The mainstem Tennessee River winds its way for roughly 650 miles through Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, back into Tennessee, and finally into Kentucky, where it empties into the Ohio River. Streams from these states, but also North Carolina and Georgia, feed the river along its course. Indeed, the entire basin encompasses over 40,000 square miles. Five major physiographic provinces are represented within the basin: the Blue Ridge, the Valley...

A combination of citizen science inventories and expert assessments will be used to collect critical baseline information on known spring and seep resources using the Spring Ecosystem Inventory and Assessment Protocols and adapting them as needed for the unique arid Sky Island ecosystems. The assessment will collect information on channel morphology, riparian and wetland vegetation, water quality, aquatic macroinvertebrates, and wildlife. This information will be combined with historic data from cooperating agencies (Pima County, Santa Cruz County, USFS, NPA, USGS, USFWS, BLM, and AGFD) in a regional, on-line database to provide a landscape level context for managing resources, which was previously unavailable due...

This database contains the data inputs used to create a 30 meter resistance layer for the Western Washington Habitat Connectivity Assessment. All input data were clipped to the study area and converted to 30 meter raster format in the same projection with matching cell alignment unless otherwise noted. Input data was reclassified as needed in order to assign resistance values. We made three different resistance surfaces, using these data inputs, for testing in sensitivity analyses. For the first, we started with a conventional methodology for creating resistance surfaces (Using Gnarly Landscape Utilities), and then combined this result with nuanced layers about road impacts and building density impacts. These nuanced...

The Omniscape algorithm is based on an omnidirectional implementation of the connectivity tool, CircuitScape. It uses a moving window approach to calculate connectivity. For more information on the OmniScape approach please refer to McRae et al (2016) For this project, we tested several different moving window sizes from 250 meters to 1250 meters. A pixel size of 90 meters was used for computational efficiency. We used the OmniScape Python script provided by TNC. Omniscape requires two inputs: a resistance surface and a source surface. We used the standard resistance surface described above, along with the habitat layer described above as the source surface. Current FlowThe raw output of Omniscape is converted into...

Pollinator decline and conservation is a complex and challenging issue with the potential to tax the capacity of individual state agencies; a collaborative approach among states and federal agencies has a higher likelihood success in meeting this emerging conservation challenge. Bumble bees have been identified as a particularly imperiled group of important pollinators. To aid the collaborative pollinator conservation effort, this report compiles the most up-to-date information related to bumble bees: threats, best practices for land management, and monitoring protocols into one location. The goal is to provide the basis for discussions on how to move bumble bee conservation forward more collaboratively in the Midwest.

Improved Gulf Hypoxia Planning Tool: Landscape scale planning tools focus conservation priorities through a series of region-specific lenses. These tools include: CHAT; SECAS; Gulf Hypoxia Initiative - Precision Conservation Blueprint v1.5; and landscape designs developed by the Great Plains LCC and Gulf Coast Prairie LCC. Discussions with industry, agency and organizational leaders across the mid-continent suggest that the time is ripe for opening a dialogue about how to bridge the planning between the west and east to find the appropriate stakeholder-driven set of mid-continent connections for a network of lands and waters. The recipient will assist staff from multiple LCCs and other interested entities in setting...
