Basal area is a measure of the cross-sectional area of trees calculated by multiplying the foresters’ constant (0.005454) by the squared diameter of each tree to determine a measure of tree area (ft2 or m2) per unit area (acre or ha). Similar to an assessment of forest canopy cover, basal area provides a measure of horizontal structure, and is closely associated with measures of vertical structure. When assessing condition of upland hardwood woodland and forest systems, the GCPO LCC Integrated Science Agenda targets a large proportion of the basal area in those systems to be composed of oak and hickory species. This endpoint targets >90% of basal area as oak and hickory for upland hardwood woodland systems and >70%...

The purpose of this data set is support resource allocation decisions (i.e. where to invest conservation effort) within the Gulf Coastal Plains and Ozarks Landscape Conservation Cooperative. The Management Opportunity action map for the Open Pine habitat system ranks pixels (250-m) for 3 general classes of conservation actions. Maintenance pixels (values 7-9) are currently estimated to meet the site condition Endpoints in the GCPO LCC’s draft Integrated Science Agenda (v4). Enhancement pixels (values 4-6) are those that are currently classified as Open Pine but do not meet the site condition Endpoints in the Science Agenda. Restoration pixels (values 1-3) are those that are currently in a different land use but...
The conservation community of the Caribbean can feel small, at times, or as vast as the ocean that surrounds us. In a growingly complex world of environmental and social obstacles it is imperative to work collaboratively across ecosystems, scales, disciplines and methodologies. Protecting natural and cultural resources is essential to sustaining our health and quality of life. People, along with the fish and wildlife, rely on clean water and the benefits of healthy rivers, streams, wetlands, forests, grasslands, coasts, coral reefs, estuaries and oceans in order to thrive. Equally as diverse and vibrant as our ecosystems are the Caribbean peoples, histories, and cultures that are arguably just as threatened as our...

Despite the existence of high quality scientific information, there are significant barriers to the application of available tools to real-world decisions regarding how to best restore and manage coastal wetlands in consideration of climate change effects. These barriers derive from the difficulty in determining the most appropriate restoration or management prescription in light of site-specific habitat conditions, constraints, and expected future conditions. Wetlands along the southern California coast vary widely in terms of their size, habitat composition, and forcing functions. For example, the balance between fluvial and littoral processes can affect the size, extent, and frequency of tidal inlet closures....
Phases 1-3 (2010-2012): This project developed landscape change scenarios based upon water availability and precipitation and temperature patterns projected from downscaled models and investigated impacts of these changes on habitats and ecology of waterfowl, shorebirds, and other waterbirds in the Central Valley. This project provides critical information and support to understand and incorporate likely impacts of climatic change in conservation planning. Science Delivery Phase (2013): The goal of this work is to work with the Central Valley Joint Ventures (CVJV) to adapt the scenario modeling project results and modeling tool so they can be used by the CVJV to incorporate climate, urbanization, and water supply...

While meadows cover less than one percent of the Sierra Nevada, these ecosystems are of high ecological importance given their role in carbon and nitrogen storage, mediation of surface water flows, groundwater recharge, sediment filtration, and as refugia for numerous species. Understanding how – and where – to conserve and restore meadow ecosystems is a critical management question facing US Forest Service (USFS) and other land managers in the Sierra Nevada. The information and tools generated from this project are intended to significantly increase understanding of meadow responses to climate, associated changes in hydrology, and to develop conservation and restoration priorities that are strongly aligned with...
Dozens of species of landbirds, such as warblers, hummingbirds, and orioles, migrate through the Northeastern United States from their summer breeding grounds in the U.S. and Canada to their nonbreeding grounds as far south as South America. During the migration period, birds must find habitat where they can stop, rest and replenish their energy reserves. Conservation efforts are increasingly focused on identifying stopover sites that are important for sustaining migratory landbird populations. This project builds upon prior work by the University of Delaware and USGS to use weather surveillance data and field surveys to map and predict important migratory bird stopover sites. This project was co-funded by through...

The Highstead Foundation worked with partners to deliver, disseminate, and communicate North Atlantic LCC science products to help advance the knowledge base, strategic conservation planning, and on-the-ground conservation success of regional conservation partnerships (RCPs). There are 39 RCPs in New England (and eastern New York) covering more than 60 percent of the landscape, working across town and even state boundaries to achieve conservation that is both locally grounded and regionally significant. Each RCP is composed of multiple land trusts, community leaders, agencies, and conservation groups. Highstead, in partnership with the GIS office of Harvard Forest, Harvard University, provided technical assistance...

This project built off a first phase of work funded by Northeast states through the Regional Conservation Needs program by assessing the vulnerability to climate change of 7-10 additional northeastern habitat types, including forests, wetlands, and aquatic systems. Tidally-influenced habitat vulnerability was also assessed and included development of a database of ongoing coastal climate change projects and tools. The project will also build capacity in the Northeastern states for Regional Vulnerability Assessments and will coordinate with NOAA in the development of an on-line catalog of coastal climate change assessments.

This simple interface is designed to help inform conservation decisions by allowing you to explore a suite of data layers and models. You’ll find information on priority natural resources, biodiversity richness, landscape connectivity and integrity, surface waters and factors contributing to potential landscape change (sea level rise, urban development). 1 Compare Key Characteristics across FloridaUse one of the tabs above to explore different combinations of key characteristics assessed at the watershed scale across the state. Click on the bars in the charts to filter the map by that class. You can combine filters across tabs and across factors within a tab. You can also display that factor on the map by clicking...

Funding supports a multiyear initiative entitled Crown of the Continent Landscapes Analysis/Ecological Indicators Project. The work is designed to focus on issues on transboundary data integration and synthesis, habitatconnectivity analysis for grizzly bears (Ursus arctos) and other key wildlife species, and outreach programs aimed at disseminating knowledge, information products, and geospatial tools arising out of this work to the extensive network of Crown Managers Partnership (CMP) and GNLCC collaborators.FY2010Objectives:The monitoring strategy will focus on the development and acquisition of geospatial datasets from remote sensing and other GIS sources designed to track changes in habitats and human footprint...

FY2014Avoiding cheatgrass dominance following tree-reduction treatments on woodland-encroached sagebrush communities is a priority for managers in the Great Basin. Perennial herbaceous and weedy annual cover have been related to site resilience after treatment and associated with soil climate regimes and site physical characteristics. Additional investigation of site characteristics associated with vegetation response will allow us to better decide which sites to treat and whether seeding is needed or not in conjunction with tree reduction treatments. Site-level planning also requires an understanding of how climate change may influence vegetation response to treatments. We propose to associate site-measured soil...

Oregon’s Upper Klamath Basin is one of the warmest watersheds in the Pacific Northwest. Despite its naturally warm waters, the basin supports abundant redband trout. These are some of the largest-bodied trout in the entire U.S., and are a culturally and economically important species, providing the last remaining subsistence fishery for the Klamath Tribes and drawing recreational anglers. The ability of this coldwater species to survive in one of the region’s warmest watersheds could hold valuable clues for conservation in the face of warming global temperatures, which represents one of the biggest threats to North America’s coldwater fish. Previous research has found that redband trout rely heavily on spring-fed...
