The Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) is one of the largest programs of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) that encourages farmers and ranchers to establish resource-conserving vegetative covers to address soil, water and related resource issues on their lands. This research study examines the relationship between the CRP and the changes in the groundwater levels within Texas County in the Oklahoma Panhandle region. The region overlies the central portion of the High Plains Aquifer that has shown significant decline in groundwater levels, due largely to the development of irrigated agriculture. Using the calibrated SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) model and GIS-based analysis, a significant spatial...

Little information is available on the use of areas enrolled in the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) by Gunnison sage-grouse (Centrocercus minimus) or the impacts of grazing on their habitat selection and movement patterns. Using radiotelemetry, we monitored 13 Gunnison sage-grouse in San Juan County, Utah, USA during 20012002 to determine their use of CRP. Additionally, in 2002 some of the CRP land used by the birds in 2001 was grazed under a drought emergency declaration. This afforded us an opportunity to monitor their response to livestock grazing. Although Gunnison sage-grouse used CRP for nesting, brood-rearing, and summer habitat, it was not selected in greater proportion than its availability (P 0.10)...

Although various studies have shown that corn ethanol reduces greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by displacing fossil fuel use, many of these studies fail to include how land-use history affects the net carbon balance through changes in soil carbon content. We evaluated the effectiveness and economic value of corn and cellulosic ethanol production for reducing net GHG emissions when produced on lands with different land-use histories, comparing these strategies with reductions achieved by set-aside programs such as the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP). Depending on prior land use, our analysis shows that C releases from the soil after planting corn for ethanol may in some cases completely offset C gains attributed...

This data release includes sampling location identification and timing data as well as plant and insect pollinator taxonomic information in Conservation Reserve Program fields. Sampling took place during July and August of 2019. Fields were located on private land managed for the U.S.Department of Agriculture Conservation Reserve Program in eastern central Iowa, U.S.A.

Data included in this data set are for blue vane trap captured native bees from Logan County, Colorado starting in 2012 and ending in 2014. Data collected were the number of bees captured per date, per field, and identified to genus. Net level data contains 16,229 records.

Data included in this data set are from edge-of-field surveys that recorded the presence of erosional features, cover of vegetation and bare ground, and management activities (e.g., haying) on 1092 fields that had expired from three types of conservation practices (grassland, wetland, and wildlife) in the Conservation Reserve Program. Field sampling data were recorded across six US Department of Agriculture Farm Production Regions (Corn belt, Lake states, Mountain, Northern plains, Pacific, Southern plains) from 2017 to 2018. The study area encompassed all or part of 14 states: Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas....
Field crews from Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center from 1991-1993 in Stutsman County, North Dakota and Pope and Stevens Counties, Minnesota, gathered nest success and fledgling data from nests found within Conservation Reserve Program fields and Waterfowl Production Areas. This dataset includes nesting observations of bird species found within these two field types. The dataset includes genus and species, vegetation height, distance to edge and perch, host nesting and fledgling variables, and parasitic nesting and fledgling variables.

Data included in this data set are from in-field and edge-of-field surveys that recorded the presence of erosional features and cover of vegetation and bare ground on 1786 Conservation Reserve Program fields across three types of conservation practices (grassland, wetland, and wildlife). Field sampling data were recorded across six US Department of Agriculture Farm Production Regions (Corn belt, Lake states, Mountain, Northern plains, Pacific, Southern plains) from 2016 to 2018. The study area encompassed all or part of 14 states: Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. Data included in this data set are from edge-of-field surveys of managed fields that recorded the presence of erosional features and cover of vegetation and bare ground on 320 Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) fields across central and western United States. Field sampling data was recorded across six US Department of Agriculture Farm Production Regions (Corn belt, Lake states, Mountain, Northern plains, Pacific, Southern plains) from 2016 to 2019. The study area encompassed all or part of 14 states: Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. This paper has three purposes. The first is to conceptualize agricultural watersheds as complex adaptive human ecosystems that co-produce agricultural goods and ecosystem services. The second is to demonstrate a generalizable framework for the spatial modeling of ecosystem service production in watersheds based on this conceptualization. The third is to examine the policy implications of the analysis conducted using this spatial decision support system (SDSS). Analyses using the SDSS show that restrictions on soil loss to the “tolerance level” (T) cause average farm income to decline by only 4%, a reduction that is nearly eliminated if the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) is available to farmers as an income-generating...

The data set consists of bird abundance data collected in undisturbed grassland fields enrolled in the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) and former CRP fields that were converted to cropland, grazing land, or hayland in nine counties in four states (Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Minnesota) in the northern Great Plains. The study was initiated in 1990, but data were only included in this dataset for the 18 years in which all three of the post-CRP management practices occurred, i.e., 1996–2003 and 2008–2017. The data were summarized and used in the analysis for a peer-reviewed publication entitled: "Conversion of CRP Grasslands to Cropland, Grazing Lands, or Hayland: Effects on Breeding Bird Abundances."...
To better understand the motivations of landowners, specifically farmers, to participate in programs that improve wildlife habitat and water quality in the region. The LCC is working with U.S. Geological Survey to evaluate factors influencing landowners’ enrollment in U.S. Department of Agriculture programs that improve water quality by reducing sedimentation and nutrient loading, and, landowners’ incentives to enter into sustainable agricultural systems. The outcomes of this study will provide insight into designing and developing programs, practices and messages that encourage broader participation in conservation programs and sustainable practices within the agricultural community. The long-term objectives of...
![]() This dataset represents the cumulative acreage of farmland by county enrolled in the Farm Service Agency's Conservation Reserve Program in 2004. To create this dataset, the Conservation Biology Institute (CBI) obtained the cumulative acreage by county summary table from the Farm Service Agency (FSA) for 2004 (the latest year available in such form). CBI then joined this to a dataset containing county boundaries for the U.S. to create this dataset. As described on the Farm Service Agency website (http://www.fsa.usda.gov), the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) is a voluntary program for agricultural landowners. The CRP provides a mechanism to receive annual rental payments and cost-share assistance to establish long-term,...
