Important policy issues concerning the mitigation of impacts from construction and development affecting wetlands are under examination by the U.S. Congressional Office of Technology Assessment, the Environment and Public Works Committee of the U.S. Senate, and the National Wetlands Technical Council. The issues divide into two main parts: (1) how the current strategy to simplify federal regulation of wetlands is limiting the success of mitigation; and (2) how to change the present strategy for mitigation under the U.S. Clean Water Act, if at all. Requirements for site-specific analysis of impacts and their mitigation requirements are being replaced by simple, uniform national guidelines on impact mitigation; these...

Desirable biofuel crops may amount to mass cultivation of potentially invasive species—How should policy keep these agroecosystems in check?
Ecological evaluation is essential for remediation, restoration, and Natural Resource Damage Assessment (NRDA), and forms the basis for many management practices. These include determining status and trends of biological, physical, or chemical/radiological conditions, conducting environmental impact assessments, performing remedial actions should remediation fail, managing ecosystems and wildlife, and assessing the efficacy of remediation, restoration, and long-term stewardship. The objective of this paper is to explore the meanings of these assessments, examine the relationships among them, and suggest methods of integration that will move environmental management forward. While remediation, restoration, and NRDA,...

This dataset depicts inventoried and proposed areas on National Forests in Southern California. This dataset includes areas not represented in the USFS Inventoried Roadless Areas dataset for the US, due to pending judicial decisions regarding designatino of roadless areas. This dataset was developed during the 2005 Forest Planning Revision process. This is an update of the previous RARE II information, which now is considered a historical record for the affected forests.

This dataset contains the physical collection information (e.g., sample location, date, gear type) and microsatellite DNA genotype of egg and larval Lake Sturgeon collected in the St. Clair and Detroit rivers in 2015 and 2016. Individuals were genotyped for 18 microsatellite loci (13 disomic and 5 polysomic). Alleles (base pair sizes) were recorded as presence absence scores (1:present, 2:absent, 0:missing data) for all previously observed alleles. Thus individual genotypes were recorded as pseudo diploid dominant phenotypes resulting in individual vectors of length n=205 for each genotyped egg or larval individual.

These data were collected to characterize the vibration signature of individual pieces of construction equipment (jackhammer, plate compactor, and hammer drill) from human activities during a simulated bat survey and from ambient levels during a period of limited manual construction activities from within Mammoth Cave National Park, Kentucky. Mammoth Cave National Park was chosen because it is home to an Indiana bat roost and the activities associated with the construction of a new walkway caused vibrations to be felt in the cave. Geophones and accelerometers were used to measure ground velocity and acceleration, respectively. Vibrations were measured for approximately 10 seconds during each triggering of the source...

This dataset depicts the percentage of housing units by the decade of their construction, and the median value of a subset of the housing units. This dataset was derived from official U.S. Census 2000 data products processed by the Conservation Biology Institute. These attributes are depicted at the Census Block-Group level, the finest spatial scale for which the underlying metrics are available. Areas with larger percentages of housing units constructed during 1990-2000 indicate areas that have experienced recent growth in residential development. In particular, areas that have experienced growth outside urban areas may be further evaluated for residential development in close proximity to publicly-owned areas...
