The Caribbean region is part of World Energy Assessment region 6 (Central and South America). A fundamental task in the assessment is to map the locations and type of production for existing oil and gas fields. The Petroconsultants database is the only available database that has coverage for the Caribbean region. Oil and gas field symbols represent field center-points and are published with permission from Petroconsultants International Data Corporation, 2002 database.

This dataset includes a modified subset of polygon features that describe U.S. Geological Survey's defined geologic provinces of the World. Each province has a set of geologic characteristics that distinguish it from surrounding provinces. These characteristics may include dominant lithologies, the age of the strata, and/or structural type. Each province is assigned a unique numeric code and may fall within two or more countries or assessment regions.

Abstrac As a pilot study potential biophysical and human land use drivers in Costa Rica were evaluated using multi-variate statistical methods in a nested scale analysis. The reconstructed land use drivers and their quantified effects on land use were applied within a dynamic framework CLUE (Conversion of Land Use and its Effects) to model land use dynamics in Costa Rica from 1973 to 1984. Our pilot study demonstrates that a land use/cover system can be described as a scale-dependent hierarchical system and that its dynamics can be satisfactorily modelled as functions of biophysical and human drivers.

This dataset was extracted from the Ecosystems of Central America dataset (TNC / NatureServe). Using the terrestrial ecosystem map produced by the World Bank and CCAD in 2000, The Nature Conservancy and NatureServe, crosswalked the aforementioned ecosystem classification with the NatureServe standard classification for Latin America and the Caribbean (2003). The purpose of this map is to have a consistent ecosystem map for Latin America, as South America has an ecosystem map using the NatureServe classification since 2005. The ecosystem crosswalk was done by Maarten Kappelle, Lenin Corrales, Carmen Josse and Leonardo Sotomayor, and was completed in June 2010. The crosswalk was done in several parts. First, the...
Soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) transport/retention was determined in two rain forest streams (Salto, Pantano) draining La Selva Biological Station, Costa Rica. There, SRP levels can be naturally high due to groundwater enriched by geothermal activity within the surfically dormant volcanic landscape, and subsequently discharged at ambient temperature. Combined field and laboratory approaches simulated high but natural geothermal SRP input with the objective of estimating the magnitude of amended SRP retention within high and low SRP settings and determining the underlying mechanisms of SRP retention. First, we examined short-term SRP retention/transport using combined SRP-conservative tracer additions at high...

This data release presents the Yale stocks and flows database (YSTAFDB). Its data describe the use of 102 materials from the early 1800s to circa 2013 through anthropogenic cycles, their recycling and criticality properties, and on spatial scales ranging from suburbs to global. This data collection was previously scattered across multiple non-uniformly formatted files such as journal papers, reports, and unpublished spreadsheets. These data have been synthesized into YSTAFDB, which is presented as individual comma-separated text files and also in MySQL and PostgreSQL database formats. Consolidation of these data into a single database can increase their accessibility and reusability, which is relevant to diverse...

Nutrient recycling by animals is a potentially important biogeochemical process in both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Stoichiometric traits of individual species may result in some taxa playing disproportionately important roles in the recycling of nutrients relative to their biomass, acting as keystone nutrient recyclers. We examined factors controlling the relative contribution of 12 Neotropical fish species to nutrient recycling in four streams spanning a range of phosphorus (P) levels. In high-P conditions (135 μg/L soluble reactive phosphorus, SRP), most species fed on P-enriched diets and P excretion rates were high across species. In low-P conditions (3 μg/L SRP), aquatic food resources were depleted...

This inventory was originally created by Ruiz and others (2019) describing the landslides triggered by the M 6.1 Cinchona, Costa Rica earthquake that occurred on 8 January 2009 at 19:21:35 UTC. Care should be taken when comparing with other inventories because different authors use different mapping techniques. This inventory also could be associated with other earthquakes such as aftershocks or triggered events. Please check the author methods summary and the original data source for more information on these details and to confirm the viability of this inventory for your specific use. With the exception of the data from USGS sources, the inventory data and associated metadata were not acquired by the U.S. Geological...

This dataset presents information about facilities relating to the mineral industries of Latin America and the Caribbean. Facilities include mines, mineral processing plants (including refineries and smelters), oil and gas field locations, and petroleum refineries. Relevant data fields include the mineral commodity, specific forms of the mineral commodity produced, location information, facility name, operator, ownership of the facility, annual production capacity, operational status, as well as geographic coordinates and locational accuracy. These data are derived from data presented by country by the Global Minerals Analysis section of the U.S. Geological Survey's (USGS) National Minerals Information Center (NMIC)...
