The data were generated as part of a study to determine if buccal (oral) swabs could be used to obtain genetic material from Red-Cockaded Woodpecker chicks. Different swab types were investigated to determine if any specific type gave the highest DNA yields.

This data set describes nuclear microsatellite genotypes derived from eleven autosomal loci (Lar24, Lar12, Lar26, Lar19, Rbg13, K16, Rbg18, Hg18, Hg16, Hg25, Rbg29). A total of 651 Larus gulls were examined for this study with samples collected throughout North America, Europe, Russia, and South America.

This dataset contains barometric pressure collected at the Santa Cruz River at Tubac, Arizona (SC14, 09481740). The data were recorded using a Solinst 3001 Barologger for the period of February 12, 2015 to December 31, 2016. The data were logged continuously at a 15-minute interval and manually downloaded. Non-vented pressure transducers do not correct for atmospheric pressure, therefore, stream-stage data were corrected for atmospheric pressure using the barometric pressure collected at this SC14. The barologger was stored in the gage house at SC14.
Understanding climate change and its potential impact on species, populations and communities is one of the most pressing questions of twenty-first-century conservation planning. Palaeobiogeographers working on Cenozoic fossil records and other lines of evidence are producing important insights into the dynamic nature of climate and the equally dynamic response of species, populations and communities. Climatic variations ranging in length from multimillennia to decades run throughout the palaeo-records of the Quaternary and earlier Cenozoic and have been shown to have had impacts ranging from changes in the genetic structure and morphology of individual species, population sizes and distributions, community composition...

In this study US Geological Survey scientists collected pollen samples from honey bee (Apis mellifera) colonies distributed across North Dakota, South Dakota, and Minnesota, in 2015 and 2016. Sequencing of nuclear ribosomal loci was used to determine the number and abundance of flowering plant taxa. The data contain counts of Operational Taxonomic Unit (OTU) reads of honey bee collected pollen from apiary locations throughout the growing season.

A survey of environmental DNA was performed in Tunison Creek downstream of the USGS Tunison Aquatic Laboratory. The goal of the survey was to characterize the source ecological community at multiple trophic or taxonomic levels by associating DNA fragments with reference databases. Three taxonomically informative genetic loci were used: the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase 1 locus, the mitochondrial 12S ribosomal locus, and the bacterial/organellar 16S ribosomal locus. The data set includes a list of sample and sequence accessions residing in the National Center for Biotechnology Information databases, which provide the raw data for analysis or re-use. The data also includes the representative sequences of operational...

This dataset contains stream-stage data for Peck Canyon near Rio Rico, Arizona (PC1). The pressure transducer was housed in a crest-stage pipe mounted to the bridge pier of West Frontage Road. The data were recorded using non-vented Solinst Levelogger for the period of October 7, 2015 to December 31, 2016. The data were logged continuously at a 15-minute interval and manually downloaded. Data were corrected with the atmospheric pressure collected from a Solinst Barologger located at SC14 and checked for erroneous data.

Community composition data from multi-pass electrofishing surveys for assessing fish populations in headwater streams of the Adirondack Mountains, New York, USA. Each row represents one individual fish. This spreadsheet contains 11 columns. The first 7 columns describe the data (year collected, local site ID, stream name, latitude, longitude, USGS site number, and electrofishing pass number) and the remaining 4 columns describe each individual fish (common name, scientific name, total length (mm) and weight (g)). These data support the following publication: Baldigo, B.P., Sporn, L.A., George, S.D., and Ball, Jacob, 2017. Efficacy of environmental DNA to detect and quantify Brook Trout Salvelinus fontinalis, populations...

This dataset contains stream-stage data for Sonoita Creek Canyon near Rio Rico, Arizona (SON2). The pressure transducer was mounted to a metal post secured in the center of the dry-streambed at the base of the railroad trestle. The data were recorded using non-vented Solinst Levelogger for the period of October 19, 2015 to December 31, 2016. The data were logged continuously at a 15-minute interval and manually downloaded. Data were then corrected with the atmospheric pressure collected from a Solinst Barologger located at SC14. The data was processed and analyzed for erroneous data.
Freshwater mussels (unionids) are increasingly recognized as important providers of ecosystem services, yet are among the most endangered fauna in the world. Because unionids are generally sessile and require specific fish hosts for development and dispersal, they are particularly vulnerable to habitat degradation. Surprisingly, little is known about the distribution of genetic diversity in freshwater mussels and this gap has a negative impact on taxonomy, monitoring, conservation and ecological research in these species. Here, we focus on western North American Anodonta, one of only three genera known to exist in this broad landscape and which contains three highly divergent lineages. We describe phylogeographical...

Here we compare pollen identification results derived from light microscopy and DNA sequencing techniques of a robust number of samples collected from honey bee colonies embedded within intensive agricultural landscapes in the Northern Great Plains. We collected pollen samples from colonies within 6 apiaries in 2010 and 2011. For each pollen sample, we identified pollen grains via light microscopy and provide the number of grain counts-per-million. A separate aliquot of each pollen sample subjected to light microscope identification was also used for DNA sequencing analysis. We provide the plant operational taxonomic unit (OTU) for all base pair reads as the number of reads-per-million.

This dataset contains stream-stage data for Josephine Canyon near Tumacácori, Arizona (JC1). The pressure transducer was housed in a crest-stage pipe mounted to the bridge pier of Pendleton Drive. The data were recorded using non-vented Solinst Levelogger for the period of October 07, 2015 to December 31, 2016. The data are logged continuously at a 15-minute interval and manually downloaded. Data were corrected with the atmospheric pressure collected from a Solinst Barologger located at SC14 and checked for erroneous data.
We report the first simultaneous measurements of δ15N and δ13C of DNA extracted from surface soils. The isotopic composition of DNA differed significantly among nine different soils. The δ13C and δ15N of DNA was correlated with δ13C and δ15N of soil, respectively, suggesting that the isotopic composition of DNA is strongly influenced by the isotopic composition of soil organic matter. However, in all samples DNA was enriched in 13C relative to soil, indicating microorganisms fractionated C during assimilation or preferentially used 13C enriched substrates. Enrichment of DNA in 15N relative to soil was not consistently observed, but there were significant differences between δ15N of DNA and δ15N of soil for...
