The Neversweat Prospect (MMK-092) is located on the right bank of Eldorado Creek, a tributary of Moose Creek. The site is a landscape of the Kantishna Historic Mining District (KHMD). The KHMD is within the boundaries of Denali National Park and Preserve, at the end of the 92 mile Park Road near Wonder Lake. The Neversweat Prospect is a 4.3 acre historic site and contains a small collection of historic buildings and structures, small scale features and landscape features associated with lode mining. The extant features consist of one building (cabin), and 15 structures (three collapsed adits, one partially collapsed adit, one partially collapsed outhouse, a historic road, a historic trail, six rock retaining walls)....

We recorded observations of caribou (Rangifer tarandus), grizzly bear (Ursus arctos), Dall sheep (Ovis dalli) and moose (Alces alces) along the Denali National Park and Preserve road corridor during 1995-97. We compared these observations to similar data from previous studies to evaluate the effect of an increase in traffic on the number of animals sighted and their behavior. Between 1972 and 1997, annual visitation to Denali National Park increased from about 45000 to 350000, with attendant increases in traffic on the park road. The mean number of caribou, grizzly bear, and Dall sheep observed did not decline (p > 0.301) from 1973 to 1997. The number of moose observed declined by more than 50% (R² = 0.529, p 0.787),...
Berry availability and quality may be factors driving grizzly bear population dynamics on the north flank of the Alaska Range. Fall nutritional status is largely dependent on berry availability. The primary berry food sources in the study are blueberry, crowberry, and soapberry. Aerial surveys were conducted to assess distribution patterns of the berries and to select areas for establishing monitoring transects. Cover of berry-producing species and actual number of berries, etc., were determined. Berry samples were analyzed for total nitrogen and stable nitrogen isotope ratios. Seeds were analyzed separately.
This document is the narrative for the Snowpack Monitoring Protocol for the Central Alaska Network (CAKN). The narrative explains the rationale for monitoring snowpack and sets forth the objectives. The narrative discusses how snowpack will be monitored, a history of protocol development, and the inherent tie of this protocol to the CAKN Climate Monitoring Protocol. The CAKN Snowpack Monitoring Protocol has been developed based on a partnership with the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) who have a well established network of snow monitoring sites around the state of Alaska. This narrative will describe the sampling techniques of the NRCS program that have been adopted by the CAKN program and provide an...
The increasing trends in aerosol concentrations observed by the Interagency Monitoring of Protected Visual Environments (IMPROVE) network in the wilderness areas along the Gulf of Alaska during low insolation periods and in Denali National Park and Preserve (Denali NP) during high insolation periods have raised the concerns about air quality degradation and visibility impairment in these pristine areas. This dissertation aims to investigate the reason for those observed increases in aerosol concentrations in Alaska wilderness areas by performing a series of simulation sets with the Weather Research and Forecasting model coupled with Chemistry (WRF-Chem). These simulation sets use the same meteorological conditions...
