The USGS Central Region Energy Team assesses oil and gas resources of the United States. The onshore and State water areas of the United States comprise 71 provinces. Within these provinces, Total Petroleum Systems are defined and Assessment Units are defined and assessed. Each of these provinces is defined geologically, and most province boundaries are defined by major geologic changes. The Denver Basin Province is located in eastern Colorado, western Nebraska, southern South Dakota, and eastern Wyoming encompassing all or parts of Pueblo, El Paso, Crowley, Lincoln, Kit Carson, Elbert, Teller, Douglas, Jefferson, Denver, Arapahoe, Adams, Washington, Yuma, Morgan, Weld, Broomfield, Boulder, Larimer, Logan, Sedwick,...

Cell maps for each oil and gas assessment unit were created by the USGS as a method for illustrating the degree of exploration, type of production, and distribution of production in an assessment unit or province. Each cell represents a quarter-mile square of the land surface, and the cells are coded to represent whether the wells included within the cell are predominantly oil-producing, gas-producing, both oil and gas-producing, dry, or the type of production of the wells located within the cell is unknown. The well information was initially retrieved from the IHS Energy Group, PI/Dwights PLUS Well Data on CD-ROM, which is a proprietary, commercial database containing information for most oil and gas wells in the...

The USGS Central Region Energy Team assesses oil and gas resources of the United States. The onshore and State water areas of the United States comprise 71 provinces. Within these provinces, hydrocarbon plays were defined and assessed. Each of these provinces is defined geologically, and most province boundaries are defined by major geologic changes. The province boundaries were drawn on the county lines that most closely followed the natural geologic boundaries.

The previously developed three-dimensional groundwater flow model (MODFLOW2000) of the Denver Basin bedrock aquifer system and overlying alluvial aquifer (https://pubs.er.usgs.gov/publication/pp1770 and model archive https://doi.org/10.5066/F77W69PQ) was updated to provide quantitative estimates of groundwater flow conditions and provide a useful tool for managers to analyze temporal changes to the hydrologic system in response to changing climatic conditions and future groundwater development. The computer program ZONEBUDGET was used to calculate cell by cell water balances for the major components of the water budget for the Upper Big Sandy Designated Groundwater Basin alluvial aquifer. The original Denver Basin...

These data were released prior to the October 1, 2016 effective date for the USGS’s policy dictating the review, approval, and release of scientific data as referenced in USGS Survey Manual Chapter 502.8 Fundamental Science Practices: Review and Approval of Scientific Data for Release. A natural consequence of groundwater withdrawals is the removal of water from subsurface storage, but the overall rates and magnitude of groundwater depletion in the United States are not well characterized. This study evaluates long-term cumulative depletion volumes in 40 separate aquifers or areas and one land use category in the United States, bringing together information from the literature and from new analyses. Depletion is...

A three-dimensional groundwater flow model (MODFLOW2000) of the Denver Basin bedrock aquifer system and overlying alluvial aquifer was developed to provide quantitative estimates of groundwater flow conditions and provide a useful tool for managers to analyze temporal changes to the hydrologic system in response to changing climatic conditions and future groundwater development. In 2004, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) initiated large-scale regional studies to provide updated assessments of groundwater availability in important principal aquifers across the United States, including the Denver Basin. The Denver Basin groundwater flow model includes several enhancements over previous modeling efforts because of...

The Total Petroleum System is used in the National Assessment Project and incorporates the Assessment Unit, which is the fundamental geologic unit used for the assessment of undiscovered oil and gas resources. The Total Petroleum System is shown here as a geographic boundary defined and mapped by the geologist responsible for the province and incorporates not only the set of known or postulated oil and (or) gas accumulations, but also the geologic interpretation of the essential elements and processes within the petroleum system that relate to source, generation, migration, accumulation, and trapping of the discovered and undiscovered petroleum resource(s).

In 2004, the U.S. Geological Survey initiated a large-scale regional study of the Denver Basin aquifer system to evaluate the hydrologic effects of continued pumping and document an updated groundwater-flow model useful for appraisal of hydrologic conditions (Paschke, 2011). This data release includes spatial datasets used as input for a three-dimensional groundwater-flow model of the Denver Basin aquifer system. Spatial datasets were developed for six Denver Basin bedrock aquifers and five intervening confining units including, from oldest to youngest, the Laramie-Fox Hills aquifer (KLF), Laramie confining unit (KLC), lower Arapahoe aquifer (LKA), Arapahoe confining unit (KAC), upper Arapahoe aquifer (UKA), Denver...

The Assessment Unit is the fundamental unit used in the National Assessment Project for the assessment of undiscovered oil and gas resources. The Assessment Unit is defined within the context of the higher-level Total Petroleum System. The Assessment Unit is shown here as a geographic boundary interpreted, defined, and mapped by the geologist responsible for the province and incorporates a set of known or postulated oil and (or) gas accumulations sharing similar geologic, geographic, and temporal properties within the Total Petroleum System, such as source rock, timing, migration pathways, trapping mechanism, and hydrocarbon type. The Assessment Unit boundary is defined geologically as the limits of the geologic...

Within these provinces, Total Petroleum Systems are defined and Assessment Units are defined and assessed. Each of province is defined geologically, and most province boundaries are defined by major geologic changes. This dataset is a compilation of data that has been studied and published separately, and in some cases adjacent provinces do not share a common boundary. As a consequence, there are numerous gaps and overlaps in this layer.
