Aggregation of Coleonyx variegatus in diurnal shelter sites is shown to be a statistically valid phenomenon, confirming earlier reports based on subjective impressions. Preliminary data on causative factors suggest that limited burrow availability promotes aggregation. Experiments in which two individuals were placed in cages having an excess of burrows revealed no indication of interindividual attraction. However, these results do not exclude the operation of social factors in aggregation. On the contrary, pilot data provide hints that the sexes may differ in aggregative behavior. We hypothesize that lizard density, sex, and physical variables such as temperature and moisture may be associated with joint burrow...

This dataset provides spatial predictions of the pooled-SDM residuals from a multiscale geographically weighted regression model (MGWR) and the resulting local R2 values for individuals in the subregion encompassing the genetic sampling locations used by Edwards et al. (2015). This region offered an opportunity to explore habitat selection across the ecotone between the Mojave and Sonoran deserts and the secondary contact zone between G. agassizii and G. morafkai, and is referred to as the focal study area. The raster layers contained here accompany the manuscript Inman et al. 2019 and were used to identify multivariate clusters and map them back to geographic space. Inman et al. 2019. Local niche differences predict...

The introduction of exotic plant species into the western United States has caused substantial changes to rangeland disturbance regimes and ecosystem structure and function. For example, exotic annual grass (EAG) invasion in western rangelands has increased wildfire frequency, which greatly reduces rangeland ecosystem diversity and leads to single-species dominance in many areas. Rangeland monocultures do not provide optimal carbon sequestration and other environmental processes necessary to sustain historically normal ecosystem structure, including the ecological diversity needed to support sagebrush obligates like Greater Sagegrouse, pygmy rabbit, and pronghorn. These obligates, as well as others, require contiguous,...

The USGS Southwest Repeat Photography Collection (‘Collection’), formerly named the Desert Laboratory Repeat Photography Collection, is now housed by the Southwest Biological Science Center (SBSC) in Flagstaff, Arizona. It contains images from the late 1800s to mid-2000s, and was assembled over decades by now retired USGS scientists Drs. Robert H. Webb and Raymond M. Turner. There are 80 camera points, or stakes, along Kanab Creek in the Collection, with images and fields notes taken between 1872 and 2010 (a 138-year span). About one-fourth of the Kanab Creek film had been previously digitized, but none of the associated materials, including field notes, were digitized. The goal of the Fiscal Year (FY) 2016 Kanab...

These data provide the locational coordinates, soil texture characteristics, plant species occurrence and cover, and vegetation summary characteristics for the Tsezhin bii region in the south-central area of the Navajo Nation. They were collected in the fall of 2004 and their subsequent analysis reported in the paper titled 'Vegetation of semi-stable rangeland dunes of the Navajo Nation, Southwestern USA' in the journal Arid Lands Research and Management in 2016.
