Weighted Regressions on Time, Discharge and Season (WRTDS) and WRTDS with Kalman filtering (WRTDS_K) models were developed for total and dissolved cadmium, zinc and lead; total phosphorus and nitrogen; and dissolved orthophosphate at twelve sites in the Spokane River watershed, northern Idaho, for water years 1990 to 2018. The data table contains the annual mean concentrations and annual total loads estimated by WRTDS_K, and the flow-normalized annual mean concentrations and flow-normalized annual total loads estimated by WRTDS for each modeled site and constituent.
Acid mine waters, often containing toxic concentrations of Fe, Al, Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, Ni, Co, and Cr, can be produced from the mining of coal and metallic deposits. Values of pH for acid mine waters can range from −3.5 to 5, but even circumneutral (pH ≈ 7) mine waters can have high concentrations of As, Sb, Mo, U, and F. When mine waters are discharged into streams, lakes, and the oceans, serious degradation of water quality and injury to aquatic life can ensue, especially when tailings impoundments break suddenly. The main acid-producing process is the exposure of pyrite to air and water, which promotes oxidative dissolution, a reaction catalyzed by microbes. Current and future mining should plan for the prevention...

The goal of this study was to develop a suite of inter-related water quality monitoring approaches capable of modeling and estimating the spatial and temporal gradients of particulate and dissolved total mercury (THg) concentration, and particulate and dissolved methyl mercury (MeHg), concentration, in surface waters across the Sacramento / San Joaquin River Delta (SSJRD). This suite of monitoring approaches included: a) data collection at fixed continuous monitoring stations (CMS) outfitted with in-situ sensors, b) spatial mapping using boat-mounted flow-through sensors, and c) satellite-based remote sensing. The focus of this specific Child Page is to present all field and laboratory-based data associated with...

Arsenic (As) toxicity is a global environmental and health problem. There are both natural (eg volcanic activity) and anthropogenic sources of As (eg lead arsenate and copper arsenate were commonly used pesticides in the 1900’s). Aqueous levels of arsenic in the Klamath Basin (CA, OR), which has a volcanic origin, can exceed at some locations both the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality human health water quality criteria (2.1 ug/L) (Sturdevant, 2011) and the US EPA drinking water limit (10 ug/L) (US EPA., 2001). In this study, dissolved concentrations of As, copper (Cu) and lead (Pb) were measured in more than 30 sites within the Klamath Basin between May and October. Results from samples collected between...

This dataset includes field hydrologic measurements and laboratory analyses of surface and pore waters, sediments, benthic plants/biofilms, and biota along the Middle Snake River upgradient of the Hells Canyon Complex. The study region for this work focuses on a section of the Snake River heavily utilized for agriculture, with complex systems of irrigation diversion and return drainage, spanning 164 km above the Hells Canyon Complex (Idaho, Oregon). The goal of this study was to identify potential loading sources of methylmercury from the upgradient Snake River into the reservoir complex, with a focus on the tributaries, irrigation return drains, and riparian zones adjacent to agricultural lands along the river....

The data presented here was collected at Prado Wetlands in Riverside County, CA, USA. Physical water column parameters were collected using a multprobe sonde and includes date and time of sample collection, location (inlet, outlet), temperature (degrees Celsius), pH, specific conductivity (mircoSiemens per centimeter), and dissolved oxygen (milligrams per liter). An ISCO autosampler was utilized to remotely collect diel water samples at the inlet and outlet of the wetland. These samples were analyzed for dissolved metals (aluminum, arsenic, boron, barium, beryllium, bismuth, bromine, calcium, cadmium, cerium, cobalt, chromium, copper, dysprosium, erbium, europium, iron, gallium, gadolinium, holmium, potassium, lanthanum,...

This data release contains data collected during August 2020 for the post Carr fire Bioassessment project at Whiskeytown National Recreation Area, Shasta County, California. Data includes sediment and habitat characteristics, water chemistry, and biological conditions of tributaries to Whiskeytown Lake and Clear Creek below the dam. Samples were also collected to assess concentrations of metals in sediment, water, and invertebrate and fish tissues.

In a crude-oil-contaminated sandy aquifer at the Bemidji site in northern Minnesota, biodegradation of petroleum hydrocarbons resulted in transient increases in magnetic susceptibility under high water table conditions. The magnetic susceptibility subsequently decreased again when the water table dropped. This data set was assembled to illustrate the cause of the magnetic susceptibility changes. These data show that alkalinity is high and dissolved oxygen is low in the area where the increased magnetic susceptibility is found. The decrease in the magnetic susceptibility can be attributed to the long term decline in sediment Fe(III) concentrations with time. The decrease is caused by iron reducing bacteria converting...

This dataset contains data in support of a study by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, to describe water-quality characteristics of the Red River of the North and tributaries prior to construction of the Flood Risk Management Project in the Fargo-Moorhead metropolitan area. This dataset contains bacteria data for ten sites supplied by the North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality, pesticide data for five sites supplied by the North Dakota Department of Agriculture, results from quality control samples collected at ten sites by the USGS as well as files necessary to run loads for ten sites and seven constituents published in U.S. Geological Scientific Investigations...

This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Data Release is focused on the geochemistry of wastewater (including flowback and produced water) samples, co-produced with natural gas, collected from the Marcellus Shale Energy and Environment Laboratory (MSEEL) site. MSEEL is a long-term field site and laboratory at the Northeast Natural Energy LLC (NNE) production facility, adjacent to the Monongahela River, located in western Monongalia County, West Virginia, USA. NNE began drilling two horizontal production wells, MIP (Morgantown Industrial Park) -5H and MIP-3H, in the Marcellus Shale in 2014. The wells were completed in December 2015. Large volumes of wastewater are generated with natural gas production. These wastewaters...

The data consists of the responses (survival, growth, and/or reproduction) of test organisms were determined in six concentrations of toxicants in 7-day toxicity tests or in four different feeding rates in 7-day feeding experiments. Specifically we evaluated the sensitivity of 2 mussel species (Villosa constricta and Lampsilis siliquoidea) and P. promelas and C. dubia using effluents in 7-d exposures. We then refined the method by determining the best feeding rate of algal mixture for 1-, 2-, and 3-wk-old L. siliquoidea in a 7-d feeding experiment, and using derived optimal feeding rates to assess the sensitivity of the 3 ages of juveniles in a 7-d NaCl test. Finally, we conducted an interlaboratory study among...
