We present a petrologic and mineral physics database as part of the USGS National Crustal Model (NCM) for the western United States. Each of 209 geologic units, 134 of which are currently part of the geologic framework within the NCM, is assigned a mineralogical composition according to generalized classifications with some refinement for specific geologic formations. The mineral physics database builds off of previous work to include several minerals specific to continental rock types. OpenSHA is an effort to develop object-oriented, web- & GUI-enabled, open-source, and freely available code for conducting Seismic Hazard Analyses (SHA). Our goal is to provide a framework where any arbitrarily complex (e.g., physics based) earthquake-rupture forecast, ground-motion, or engineering-response model can “plug in” for analysis without having to change what’s being plugged into.

Subduction zones are home to the most seismically active faults on the planet. The shallow megathrust interface of subduction zones host our largest earthquakes, and are the only faults capable of M9+ ruptures. Despite these facts, our knowledge of subduction zone geometry - which likely plays a key role in determining the spatial extent and ultimately the size of subduction zone earthquakes - is incomplete. Here we calculate the three- dimensional geometries of all active global subduction zones. The resulting model - Slab2 - provides for the first time a comprehensive geometrical analysis of all known slabs in unprecedented detail.

This dataset consists of over 800 field observations of ground failure (landslides, lateral spreading, and liquefaction) and other damage triggered by the 2019-2020 Puerto Rico earthquake sequence. The sequence started with a M4.7 earthquake on 28 December 2019, followed by many more earthquakes, including 15 larger than M5 (as of 7 July 2020). The M6.4 mainshock, which is thought to have triggered much of the observed ground failure, occurred on 7 January 2020. A Finite Fault is a modeled representation of the spatial extent, amplitude and duration of fault rupture (slip) of an earthquake, and is generated via the inversion of teleseismic body waveforms and long period surface waves. It may indicate that a location of major fault-slip and source of seismic energy has occurred at a significant distance from the earthquake epicenter, which is the location on the fault where the earthquake rupture nucleated. Earthquake stress drop is a critical parameter for estimating seismic hazard. This parameter can have a strong effect on ground motion amplitudes above ~1Hz and is especially important in Oklahoma and Kansas where earthquake rates have increased sharply since 2008. We estimate stress drops for 1121 earthquakes greater than ~M3 in and near the conterminous United States using spectral ratios between collocated events at given stations. We find that the average stress drop for the few eastern United States (EUS, 26–340 Bars) tectonic main shocks studied, which tend to be deeper thrusting events with few foreshocks and aftershocks, is about three times greater than tectonic main shocks in the western United States...

Memphis has a dense urban population near faults capable of producing major earthquakes. A high probability of a moderate earthquake in the near future (e.g., a 25-40% probability of a magnitude 6.0 or greater in the next 50 years) from the New Madrid seismic zone, and relatively low regional attenuation (in other words, seismic waves do damage over a greater area in this region than for the same magnitude earthquake in the west) necessitates being prepared for earthquake hazards.
