The Missouri Resource Assessment Partnership (MoRAP) of the University of Missouri, in conjunction with the Oklahoma Biological Survey of the University of Oklahoma, produced a vegetation and landcover GIS data layer for the eastern portions of Oklahoma. This effort was accomplished with direction and funding from the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation and state and federal partners (particularly the Gulf Coast Prairie and Great Plains Landscape Conservation Cooperatives of the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service). This is a 30 meter grid that maps upland and wetland wildlife habitats/ecological systems for the Northeast, including all 13 states from Maine to Virginia, west to New York, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Mapped habitat types are drawn from the Northeastern Terrestrial Habitat Classification System (NETHCS). The NETHCS is based on NatureServe’s Ecological Systems Classification, augmented with additional information from individual state wildlife classifications and other information specific to wildlife managers. This layer was created by selecting classes relevant to conservation of the grassland-prairie-savanna broadly defined habitat from the LANDFIRE Existing Vegetation Type (evt) spatial data product clipped to the boundary of the GCPO LCC. The layer was generated as in input layer for the Draft Grassland Condition Index raster data layer in support of the GCPO LCC rapid ecological assessment of the Grassland-Prairie-Savanna Priority Habitat. This data layer summarizes ecological systems and land cover classes described in state-level and national-level maps as Broadly Defined Habitats for groups of species of conservation concern. Each grid cell in the raster is assigned a Condition Index value based on desired condition metrics using ancillary datasets and a decision tree approach for each assessed habitat. Grid cells are also assigned bar code descriptors indicating which metrics contributed to the Condition Index score for that cell. Riparian areas and floodplain forests are critical to wildlife and used by large numbers of species not only for habitat but as important corridors for dispersal and migration. We created a raster from the ESM+ layer that identified lotic habitats and the adjacent areas up to 100m from them in order to denote riparian features on the landscape that may be worthy of protection. We selected a 100m distance as a buffer distance which, if protected, would enhance conservation of riparian habitats and is consistent with prior recommendations we have made about protection of these features (WCS 2010, 2013).

Multi-season satellite imagery (Landsat ETM+) from 1999-2001 were used in conjunction with digital elevation model (DEM) derived datasets (e.g. elevation, landform, aspect, etc.) to model natural and semi-natural vegetation. The minimum mapping unit for this dataset is approximately 1 hectare. Landcover classes are drawn from NatureServe's Ecological System concept. The Climate Stress Metric is one of a suite of products from the Nature’s Network project (naturesnetwork.org). Nature’s Network is a collaborative effort to identify shared priorities for conservation in the Northeast, considering the value of fish and wildlife species and the natural areas they inhabit.
