The Gulf Coast Prairie Landscape Conservation Cooperative needed seamless landcover data for the south-central United States. This information is essential for developing computer modeling tools related to the conservation of many terrestrial species and determining the quality of vegetation to assess current and desired conditions.

The Missouri Resource Assessment Partnership (MoRAP) of the University of Missouri, in conjunction with the Oklahoma Biological Survey of the University of Oklahoma, produced a vegetation and landcover GIS data layer for the eastern portions of Oklahoma. This effort was accomplished with direction and funding from the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation and state and federal partners (particularly the Gulf Coast Prairie and Great Plains Landscape Conservation Cooperatives of the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service). The legend for the layer is based on NatureServe’s Ecological System Classification, with finer thematic units derived from land cover and abiotic modifiers of the System unit. Data for development...

This is a 30 meter grid that maps upland and wetland wildlife habitats/ecological systems for the Northeast, including all 13 states from Maine to Virginia, west to New York, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Mapped habitat types are drawn from the Northeastern Terrestrial Habitat Classification System (NETHCS). The NETHCS is based on NatureServe’s Ecological Systems Classification, augmented with additional information from individual state wildlife classifications and other information specific to wildlife managers. A terrestrial ecological system is defined as a mosaic of plant community types that tend to co-occur within landscapes with similar ecological processes, substrates, and/or environmental gradients,...
This layer was created by selecting classes relevant to conservation of the grassland-prairie-savanna broadly defined habitat from the LANDFIRE Existing Vegetation Type (evt) spatial data product clipped to the boundary of the GCPO LCC. The layer was generated as in input layer for the Draft Grassland Condition Index raster data layer in support of the GCPO LCC rapid ecological assessment of the Grassland-Prairie-Savanna Priority Habitat. In selecting vegetation types, “grasslands” were defined as any landscape dominated by grass, excluding classes considered to be features of other priority habitats, such as marshes, dunes, glades, woodlands, and pine savanna. The 44 selected grassland classes included pasture/hay...

The Northeast Ecological System dataset was last updated: 7/2014 This dataset represents terrestrial and wetland ecological systems of the Northeast (based on NatureServe’s Ecological Systems Classifications) combined with human-modified land types such as roads and agriculture. Download includes Ecosystem Type, Macrogroup, and Formation, you do not need to download each individually. This dataset was created by substantially modifying The Nature Conservancy’s Northeast Terrestrial Wildlife Habitat Classification System (NETHCS) using these steps: -Replaced the National Land Cover Database (NLCD) ‘roads’ embedded in the NETHCS with more accurate roads and trains that are distinguished from developed classes -Removed...

This data layer summarizes ecological systems and land cover classes described in state-level and national-level maps as Broadly Defined Habitats for groups of species of conservation concern. Each grid cell in the raster is assigned a Condition Index value based on desired condition metrics using ancillary datasets and a decision tree approach for each assessed habitat. Grid cells are also assigned bar code descriptors indicating which metrics contributed to the Condition Index score for that cell. This layer also contains information about potential habitats based on the LANDFIRE Biophysical Settings data layer. This layer was developed to support the next iteration of the Conservation Blueprint developed by the...

This is a 30-meter grid that maps upland and wetland wildlife habitats/ecological systems for the Northeastern US, including all 13 states from Maine to Virginia, west to New York, Pennsylvania and West Virginia, and for the Maritime provinces of Canada (Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and New Brunswick) and southeastern Quebec. Mapped habitat types are drawn from the Northeastern Terrestrial Habitat Classification System (NETHCS) and from some ecological system types identifed by Canadian ecologists as being unique to Canada. The NETHCS is based on NatureServe’s Ecological Systems Classification, augmented with additional information from individual state wildlife classifications and other information specific...

This layer summarizes the Arkansas Terrestrial Broadly Defined Habitats Condition Index based on Condition Index Scores alone. Some users may be interested in the scores generated by the project and their habitat management implications. The symbology and map colors in this dataset represent that information. For descriptions of existing and potential habitat and per-pixel habitat condition and landscape configuration inputs to these scores, consult the Arkansas Broadly Defined Habitats with Condition Index and Barcode data layer, for which the map colors describe existing Broadly Defined Habitats.

Riparian areas and floodplain forests are critical to wildlife and used by large numbers of species not only for habitat but as important corridors for dispersal and migration. We created a raster from the ESM+ layer that identified lotic habitats and the adjacent areas up to 100m from them in order to denote riparian features on the landscape that may be worthy of protection. We selected a 100m distance as a buffer distance which, if protected, would enhance conservation of riparian habitats and is consistent with prior recommendations we have made about protection of these features (WCS 2010, 2013).

Texas ecological systems data (Texas Parks and Wildlife Department [TPWD], Missouri Resource Assessment Partnership [MoRAP], and Texas Natural Resource Information Systen [TNRIS]) were used to identify map areas probable for occurrence of rare plants. Multi-season satellite imagery (Landsat ETM+) from 1999-2001 were used in conjunction with digital elevation model (DEM) derived datasets (e.g. elevation, landform, aspect, etc.) to model natural and semi-natural vegetation. The minimum mapping unit for this dataset is approximately 1 hectare. Landcover classes are drawn from NatureServe's Ecological System concept. For the majority of classes, a decision tree classifier was used to discriminate landcover types, while a minority of classes (e.g. urban classes, burn scars, etc.) were mapped using other techniques..

The Climate Stress Metric is one of a suite of products from the Nature’s Network project (naturesnetwork.org). Nature’s Network is a collaborative effort to identify shared priorities for conservation in the Northeast, considering the value of fish and wildlife species and the natural areas they inhabit. This dataset represents a measure of the estimated magnitude of climate stress that may be exerted on habitats (ecosystem types) in 2080, on a scale of 30 m2 cells. Cells where 2080 climate conditions depart substantially from conditions where the underlying ecosystem type currently occurs (the ecosystem’s “climate niche”) are considered to be stressed. Cells where the projected 2080 climate conditions are not...

The Great Plains Landscape Conservation Cooperative (GPLCC, https://www.fws.gov/science/catalog) is a partnership that provides applied science and decision support tools to assist natural resource managers conserve plants, fish and wildlife in the mid- and short-grass prairie of the southern Great Plains. It is part of a national network of public-private partnerships—known as Landscape Conservation Cooperatives (LCCs, http://www.fws.gov/science/shc/lcc.html)—that work collaboratively across jurisdictions and political boundaries to leverage resources and share science capacity. The Great Plains LCC identifies science priorities for the region and helps foster science that addresses these priorities to support...

The Nature Conservancy, Eastern Conservation Science, Eastern Regional Office. Boston, MA.This report describes the methods and approach used to develop a common, consistent map of terrestrial habitats for the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic region to guide wildlife management and conservation across jurisdictional borders, and aid in the implementation of State Wildlife Action Plans. The map is also intended to inform The Nature Conservancy’s and other conservation efforts across the Northeast region by allowing users to assess the distribution and condition of the region’s habitats and...
