This is a 30 meter grid that maps upland and wetland wildlife habitats/ecological systems for the Northeast, including all 13 states from Maine to Virginia, west to New York, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Mapped habitat types are drawn from the Northeastern Terrestrial Habitat Classification System (NETHCS). The NETHCS is based on NatureServe’s Ecological Systems Classification, augmented with additional information from individual state wildlife classifications and other information specific to wildlife managers. A terrestrial ecological system is defined as a mosaic of plant community types that tend to co-occur within landscapes with similar ecological processes, substrates, and/or environmental gradients,...
The Northeast Ecological System dataset was last updated: 7/2014 This dataset represents terrestrial and wetland ecological systems of the Northeast (based on NatureServe’s Ecological Systems Classifications) combined with human-modified land types such as roads and agriculture. Download includes Ecosystem Type, Macrogroup, and Formation, you do not need to download each individually. This dataset was created by substantially modifying The Nature Conservancy’s Northeast Terrestrial Wildlife Habitat Classification System (NETHCS) using these steps: -Replaced the National Land Cover Database (NLCD) ‘roads’ embedded in the NETHCS with more accurate roads and trains that are distinguished from developed classes -Removed...

This is a 30 meter grid that maps upland and wetland wildlife habitats/ecological systems for the Northeastern US, including all 13 states from Maine to Virginia, west to New York, Pennsylvania and West Virginia, and for the Maritime provinces of Canada (Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and New Brunswick) and southeastern Quebec. Mapped habitat types are drawn from the Northeastern Terrestrial Habitat Classification System (NETHCS) and from some ecological system types identifed by Canadian ecologists as being unique to Canada. The NETHCS is based on NatureServe’s Ecological Systems Classification, augmented with additional information from individual state wildlife classifications and other information specific...

Riparian areas and floodplain forests are critical to wildlife and used by large numbers of species not only for habitat but as important corridors for dispersal and migration. We created a raster from the ESM+ layer that identified lotic habitats and the adjacent areas up to 100m from them in order to denote riparian features on the landscape that may be worthy of protection. We selected a 100m distance as a buffer distance which, if protected, would enhance conservation of riparian habitats and is consistent with prior recommendations we have made about protection of these features (WCS 2010, 2013).

The Climate Stress Metric is one of a suite of products from the Nature’s Network project (naturesnetwork.org). Nature’s Network is a collaborative effort to identify shared priorities for conservation in the Northeast, considering the value of fish and wildlife species and the natural areas they inhabit. This dataset represents a measure of the estimated magnitude of climate stress that may be exerted on habitats (ecosystem types) in 2080, on a scale of 30 m2 cells. Cells where 2080 climate conditions depart substantially from conditions where the underlying ecosystem type currently occurs (the ecosystem’s “climate niche”) are considered to be stressed. Cells where the projected 2080 climate conditions are not...

Citation:Ferree, C and M. G. Anderson. 2013. A Map of Terrestrial Habitats of the Northeastern United States: Methods and Approach. The Nature Conservancy, Eastern Conservation Science, Eastern Regional Office. Boston, MA.This report describes the methods and approach used to develop a common, consistent map of terrestrial habitats for the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic region to guide wildlife management and conservation across jurisdictional borders, and aid in the implementation of State Wildlife Action Plans. The map is also intended to inform The Nature Conservancy’s and other conservation efforts across the Northeast region by allowing users to assess the distribution and condition of the region’s habitats and...
