This dataset represents terrestrial and wetland ecological systems of the Northeast (based on NatureServe's Ecological Systems Classifications) combined with human-modified land types such as roads and agriculture. This dataset was created by substantially modifying The Nature Conservancy's Northeast Terrestrial Wildlife Habitat Classification System (NETHCS) using these steps:-Replaced the National Land Cover Database (NLCD) 'roads' embedded in the NETHCS with more accurate roads and train lines that are distinguished from developed classes-Removed spurious development (mostly developed open space) from the edges of NLCD 'roads'-Replaced the single NETHCS open water class with National Wetlands Inventory (NWI)...

The Missouri Resource Assessment Partnership (MoRAP) of the University of Missouri, in conjunction with the Oklahoma Biological Survey of the University of Oklahoma, produced a vegetation and landcover GIS data layer for the eastern portions of Oklahoma. This effort was accomplished with direction and funding from the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation and state and federal partners (particularly the Gulf Coast Prairie and Great Plains Landscape Conservation Cooperatives of the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service). The legend for the layer is based on NatureServe’s Ecological System Classification, with finer thematic units derived from land cover and abiotic modifiers of the System unit. Data for development...

This is a 30 meter grid that maps upland and wetland wildlife habitats/ecological systems for the Northeast, including all 13 states from Maine to Virginia, west to New York, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Mapped habitat types are drawn from the Northeastern Terrestrial Habitat Classification System (NETHCS). The NETHCS is based on NatureServe’s Ecological Systems Classification, augmented with additional information from individual state wildlife classifications and other information specific to wildlife managers. A terrestrial ecological system is defined as a mosaic of plant community types that tend to co-occur within landscapes with similar ecological processes, substrates, and/or environmental gradients,...

This layer was created by selecting classes relevant to conservation of the grassland-prairie-savanna broadly defined habitat from the LANDFIRE Existing Vegetation Type (evt) spatial data product clipped to the boundary of the GCPO LCC. The layer was generated as in input layer for the Draft Grassland Condition Index raster data layer in support of the GCPO LCC rapid ecological assessment of the Grassland-Prairie-Savanna Priority Habitat. In selecting vegetation types, “grasslands” were defined as any landscape dominated by grass, excluding classes considered to be features of other priority habitats, such as marshes, dunes, glades, woodlands, and pine savanna. The 44 selected grassland classes included pasture/hay...

This data layer summarizes ecological systems and land cover classes described in state-level and national-level maps as Broadly Defined Habitats for groups of species of conservation concern. Each grid cell in the raster is assigned a Condition Index value based on desired condition metrics using ancillary datasets and a decision tree approach for each assessed habitat. Grid cells are also assigned bar code descriptors indicating which metrics contributed to the Condition Index score for that cell. This layer also contains information about potential habitats based on the LANDFIRE Biophysical Settings data layer. This layer was developed to support the next iteration of the Conservation Blueprint developed by the...

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, in cooperation with private, state, and federal partners, has produced a new land classification map for Texas, based on the NatureServe Ecological System Classification System as described by Comer (2003). Mapping Sub-systems were identified using ecological systems as a starting point. Data was collected in the field and from aerial photography to implement a supervised classification. This land cover data was combined with ecoregions, SSURGO soils, DEM-based variables, and hydrology to help interpret the ecological meaning of final mapping targets. Improved thematic and spatial resolution was achieved using a decision tree classifier with both remotely sensed and abiotic...

This layer summarizes the Arkansas Terrestrial Broadly Defined Habitats Condition Index based on Condition Index Scores alone. Some users may be interested in the scores generated by the project and their habitat management implications. The symbology and map colors in this dataset represent that information. For descriptions of existing and potential habitat and per-pixel habitat condition and landscape configuration inputs to these scores, consult the Arkansas Broadly Defined Habitats with Condition Index and Barcode data layer, for which the map colors describe existing Broadly Defined Habitats.

Riparian areas and floodplain forests are critical to wildlife and used by large numbers of species not only for habitat but as important corridors for dispersal and migration. We created a raster from the ESM+ layer that identified lotic habitats and the adjacent areas up to 100m from them in order to denote riparian features on the landscape that may be worthy of protection. We selected a 100m distance as a buffer distance which, if protected, would enhance conservation of riparian habitats and is consistent with prior recommendations we have made about protection of these features (WCS 2010, 2013).

Multi-season satellite imagery (Landsat ETM+) from 1999-2001 were used in conjunction with digital elevation model (DEM) derived datasets (e.g. elevation, landform, aspect, etc.) to model natural and semi-natural vegetation. The minimum mapping unit for this dataset is approximately 1 hectare. Landcover classes are drawn from NatureServe's Ecological System concept. For the majority of classes, a decision tree classifier was used to discriminate landcover types, while a minority of classes (e.g. urban classes, burn scars, etc.) were mapped using other techniques..

The Climate Stress Metric is one of a suite of products from the Nature’s Network project (naturesnetwork.org). Nature’s Network is a collaborative effort to identify shared priorities for conservation in the Northeast, considering the value of fish and wildlife species and the natural areas they inhabit. This dataset represents a measure of the estimated magnitude of climate stress that may be exerted on habitats (ecosystem types) in 2080, on a scale of 30 m2 cells. Cells where 2080 climate conditions depart substantially from conditions where the underlying ecosystem type currently occurs (the ecosystem’s “climate niche”) are considered to be stressed. Cells where the projected 2080 climate conditions are not...

This dataset combines the work of several different projects to create a seamless data set for the contiguous United States. Data from four regional Gap Analysis Projects and the LANDFIRE project were combined to make this dataset. In the Northwestern United States (Idaho, Oregon, Montana, Washington and Wyoming) data in this map came from the Northwest Gap Analysis Project. They used multi-season satellite imagery (Landsat ETM+) from 1999-2001 in conjunction with digital elevation model (DEM) derived datasets (e.g. elevation, landform) to model natural and semi-natural vegetation. Vegetation classes were drawn from NatureServe's Ecological System Classification (Comer et al. 2003). Additionally, the project included...
