Proposed work will monitor for five years vegetation, fuels, wildlife, insects, and weather at 10 Sagebrush Steppe Treatment Evaluation Project (SageSTEP) sites, all of which have been treated to reduce either juniper encroachment (woodland sites) or cheatgrass invasion (sagebrush/cheatgrass sites). Monitoring of treatment response over the long term will lead to a better understanding of the extent to which managers can manipulate vegetation, fuels, and wildlife habitat in the context of climate change.FY2010Objectives:1) assess longterm trajectories in populations of key plant and animal species, and link these trajectories to management restoration treatments and to climate change; 2) measure total ecosystem...

This dataset is comprised of eight files related to salt marsh monitoring data or measures of of human disturbance (i.e. human impacts in terms of physical, chemical, and land-use stressors) collected at 33 marsh study units (MSUs) in five National Parks within the NPS Northeast Coastal and Barrier Network (NCBN) along the northeastern coast of the US. Two files contain data related to the species and coverage of salt marsh vegetation observed in MSUs (1 data file, 1 definitions file). Two files contain data related to the species and abundance of nekton collected from creeks, pools and ditches in MSUs (1 data file, 1 definitions file). Two files contain data related to the height of key salt marsh vegetation species...

The US Department of Interior’s (USDI) Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has a long history of soil and vegetation monitoring of public rangelands it manages. However, historical monitoring data have been stored and managed at the field, district, or state level, making them difficult to compile and analyze. BLM’s Soil Vegetation Inventory Method (hereafter SVIM) program occurred between 1977 and 1983 in Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Wyoming. Our objective was to extract and decode vegetation cover data from the SVIM dataset in a georeferenced, digital format. Vegetation cover data are available for 22,578 SVIM site write-up areas in nine states. The wide geographic...
Abstract (from http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0006320715001834): Continental-scale monitoring programs with standardized survey protocols play an important role in conservation science by identifying species in decline and prioritizing conservation action. However, rare, inaccessible, or spatially fragmented communities may be underrepresented in continental-scale surveys. Data on these communities often come from decentralized, local monitoring efforts that differ in their goals and survey protocols. We combine 16 point count datasets, controlling for differences in protocol and detection probabilities to estimate regional trends for 14 spruce-fir forest bird species across Northeastern and Midwestern...
Abstract (from http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0006320712002388): U.S. National Park Service land managers face a variety of challenges to preserving the biodiversity in their parks. A principle challenge is to minimize the impacts of surrounding land use on park condition and biodiversity. In the absence of ideal sets of data and models, the present study develops methods and results that demonstrate a coarse-filter approach to understanding the effects of land use change on habitat types for four pilot study-areas. The area of analysis for each park is defined by a protected-area-centered-ecosystem. Habitat types were defined by biophysical factors assumed to represent the distribution of vegetation...
